At the end of last year, I finished a project with traps and hi-freq absorbers. Nothing as sophisticated as some of the talk here, but I came away with a nice sounding room. I intend to do some testing and tweaking of the room this year.

The project cost upwards of $2k.

Finally got my basement finished and just starting to move all my gear into place. Still need to organize everything, but it's a start...Here's a couple pics: (click for full size)

Did some linear frequency sweep recordings with my Alesis ProLinear 720's and an ECM8000 at the listening position with and without the OC703 absorbers in the room. Note that the monitors in the pics face straight forward, but were set back about 6 inches and angled at the listening position during the tests. The test was repeated with the monitors facing straight forward, but had little difference in the results so they aren't shown here. The frequency sweeps were from 20Hz-400Hz over the course of 6.33 minutes (1 Hz increase per second over 380 seconds). Here are the results: (click for full size)

Without absorbers:

With absorbers:

Quick comparison shows the absorbers have a noticeable smoothing effect by reducing the nulls on the 180-400Hz frequencies, but do seem to soften a bump around 110 Hz as well. Both files show a peak level around -2 dB and the lowest level around -24 dB. Even with absorbers the room still has a significant low bass problem - the trough in both sweeps goes from about 55 Hz to almost 100 Hz. The average level above 180 Hz is around -6 dB and in the low bass it's around -18 dB but as low as -24 dB. There are also significant nulls around 125 Hz and 170 Hz to deal with as well.

I don't know what effect the acoustic drums have on the results so I think I might move them out and see what happens. I'd prefer to leave them set up in the room if possible with the absorbers lined up around it as shown.

That's pretty cool Altima. Looks very nice.

My drum kit acts as a resonator an d creates a tangible sense of reverb when they are set up in my "live" aka living room. :-)

I imagine you'll see a difference with or without.

best regards,
mike

Looks nice, Altima. I haven't tested my room yet.
