I can sure say one thing Star...you've gotten more mileage out of a doorbell than I ever have.

I found ours laying on the floor a couple of days ago...lol...I guess my wife got pissed with that "install cover" and gave it throw...lol...so I went and pushed the button and the damn thing rang! It can lay right where it's at for all I care. Half the folks that come to the door knock anyway....UPS guy just yells "UPS!" and is gone like the Flash.

Sharke the scarier thing is what if someone really is yelling at us lol.

Being a study in the paranormal ( but not believeing everything I read or hear) I have run across several ....well quite a few instances of sound reproduced in a way that it isn't sound as we know it . Go figure that one. A good example is a family in a haunted house who hear footsteps in the attic . They go to check it out and there are no people walking around up there. Knocks coming from the ceiling but there are no people knocking. I think this is some kind of simulated sound that we perceive as auditory but it is somehow manufactured. Sometimes only one person hears the sound when there are others present. In that case something bypassed the ears and went directly into the auditory canal. Aside from crazy people and drug users this is something that has happened repeatedly to many people, especially in haunted settings. Of course we can dream sounds or recall sounds and hear them "in our heads". I'm no expert in this stuff but I know it happens.

Moshkiae- That must be one of your shortest posts lol.The Dark Shadow...oh boy, here we go. There is usually some truth to every fiction.

This has been going on for months, It started after my wife's father died. I'm not saying there is a connection there though. I really don't know.It has rang on Fathers day and at other times that held significance. Sometimes it just rings and we can't make any connection of any kind.

I have tried to make it ring by shaking ,banging and wiggling things and I can't make it happen. When it happens it might ring twice but sometimes it only rings once or it might ring three times, usually it rings once.

This happens at odd times like 2 or 3 in the morning. It has happened more at late evening than in the day time.
I live in a rural setting and there is no way someone could have rang my bell and ran without my catching them at it.

So this is strange...I have one of those door bells that plays musical tunes and on Christmas I might set it to play a carol but it can play dozens of songs. We had it on something like the west minster chimes but after all of this started to happen I tried to see if it was the bell and played with the settings. I ended up putting it on a setting to play all tunes randomly so out of nowhere we might get "Hail To The Chief" or "Greensleeves" at 3 in the morning, of course no one is ever at the door.

This has been going on for over two years off and on. It might be weeks between rings but it never seems to stop or go away and I can't seem to replicate the rings by playing with the bell unless I push the button. The weather doesn't seem to be a factor as it has happened in all kinds of weather.

Anyone else have any similar experiences. I know this sounds weird but it is happening.

I have a front door motion detector and on at the back door that I install, they bot will alert me if someone is at the door... Lately they both have started going off and no one is at the door back or front...... the back door goes off at 9:00am-9:25am and the front door goes off at 12:16pm-1:20pm multiable   times, I even sat in my car on my driveway one day to see if it was a dog or cat passing by but no it was not. one night at 3:00am in the morning the neighbor dog across the street was looking out there window and barking looking at my front door ( I was peeping out my bedroom window ) I saw nothing , but then the alarm at the front door went off and the dog stop barking.... this is still going on...... and yes I have lost someone very close to me as well.....

Starise, is there still something spooky going on? Somewhere I read that if people are expecting something to happen they will somehow hear something like that. Ofc I am not sure if this is the case here. Good luck with it and I hope it doesn't bother you much longer.

Re: My Door Bell Rings And No One Is There 2015/02/14 16:54:48 (permalink)
Those door sensors seem like a great thing to have. I'm wondering if the erroneous chimes some mentioned getting are the result of maybe birds flying by?

Update- Well I removed the old doorbell and decided to install a wireless doorbell. No wires to short that way.

A word to the wise- Don't install a wireless doorbell. I've been to the home center three times and I still don't really have one that works. The first two were the same kind, after the second try on those I gave up and decided to get a top of the line model that plays MP3s you can load into it from your computer. I put part of "What Does The Fox Say"
in it because you can't put in the whole thing. I'm thinking the problem might lie with the battery in the button outside. It rings usually the first time but subsequent rings don't happen. The batteries they give you with anything are usually cheap ones...so I'm going to try that and see if I get better results. I think it has just enough juice to charge the capacitors for one ring...at least this is my theory and it's worth a try. If that doesn't work I'm going to remove it and place it under the rear wheels of my car and back over it.

As it stands now, nothing human or non human has been able to really ring the new bell with any kind of regularity. A few times I've been in the room and seen a person standing at my front door. They were pushing the button but nothing happened and I was lucky enough to spot them....so the saga continues. Have you ever asked yourself why some thing in life can't be just a little simpler? I think maybe I'll put in a bell with a pull rope.

I bought a wireless doorbell for the last house I lived in and it worked fine.  I was completely able to ignore it whenever someone pushed the button.

Re: My Door Bell Rings And No One Is There 2015/03/22 02:09:58 (permalink)
I know this is an old post, but I started having this problem about 3 years ago, and kept looking for the answer. I know you may have solved the problem by now, but thought I would just share what I found anyway. I bought a really nice doorbell back then and it worked great for a while. In fact I live in a house with my adult son that has 2 apartments. We live in one and rent the other out, so I had to supply 2 doorbell sets of which I bought 2 the same so the doorbell buttons would match.

My tenant began having the same problem. I think I first bought these doorbell chimes at Home depot. They play the Westminster chime, for the front doorbell, and a shorter 2 tone for the back. After years of going through this, I finally figured out that although we thought we replaced the batteries with the right type by getting Duracell's, our wireless doorbell buttons outside take a strange type of A23 Batteries. I later found when I bought these Chinese version of the A23 batteries instead of the American Duracell A23's, that problem stopped. I ordered them on eBay & had to wait to get them from China. It seems to me when I try to get an American replacement battery, they do not work. Maybe because many of these things are made in China in the first place.

Tonight it started again, ringing at 1:00 A.M. I knew by turning our outside camera on that no one was there ringing our bell at such a time. But this time, I believe the problem is that so many new people have moved in around me, that maybe one of their door ringer codes is conflicting with ours. Many of these people do work and ring bells at all hours even 1:00 A.M. in the morning or are out partying all hours at times. I live in the city with houses too close together and many have 2 and three apartments each all with wireless doorbells these days also as well as so many other types of wireless devices that can interfear. So I have seen once before when my neighbor had bought a new doorbell set that suddenly when someone would ring his bell. ours would ring also because we had the same doorbell codes as it turns out. Once I changed my code, it stopped. So I have seen 2 situations already that can cause this problem.

Re: My Door Bell Rings And No One Is There 2015/03/22 09:06:45 (permalink)
If it's a wireless unit, replace it. Or at least try new batteries first.

If it's hardwired, trace the wires. Either in the attic or under the house. See if the wire is good. You're looking for evidence of mice or squirrels eating into the sheath..... yeah, they find that stuff tasty. Also look at the connecting points at the transformer and the junctions (if any) and at the door bell switches. Be sure the insulation on the wires is not falling off exposing too much copper. Sometimes, there is damage to the button and the tolerances are really close and that's all it takes.... the heating and cooling between day and night can make a difference.

Replace any damaged or questionable wire.

Since the unit has some microprocessor stuff in it to let you play various tunes, I would first of all suspect that the processor has some damage perhaps from a lightning strike in the past. The test would be to replace it with a simple chime unit that you can buy for a few bucks at a Home Depot or Lowes.  See if that solves the issue with the 3am door chimes.  If it does, buy a new chime unit.... if not.... look deeper into the wiring.

The doorbell is a simple circuit. Power source, wire to the doors, a switch at the door, and a load/chime. That's it.

To ring the bells, you complete the circuit at the door with the switch. Anything else doing the same along the wire from the transformer to the switch will also ring the bell.

The other possibility is that there is a spirit that has taken up residence with you..... but I don't believe in that sort of thing....well I do actually, but just not in ghosts..... Although I don't think that's likely what you have going on here.

I had a wireless, worked fine but after two years the button broke. Now I'm thinking of getting an old-style heavy duty door knocker.  There's quite a lot of cool designs options.

Recently my brother busted a door-bell abuser, it was kids playing around. With that in mine, position the door knocker up higher ---- No, no, not the kid.

"I knew by turning our outside camera on that no one was there ringing our bell at such a time."
But....you can't see a ghost..usually. :)  Thanks for the advice on the battery! Interesting story.

Thanks Herb....yeah I'm very familiar with how a doorbell works. Thanks just the same. The problem is the wire for my doorbell is buried under drywall and trim in such a way that I can't check sections of it and to replace it is impossible unless I tear off part of the front of my house :)....so this is why the wireless idea looked to good. If I pull a new wire it's going to look like Gomer Pyle did it because it will be outside of the trim:)

The real bell is looking more and more tempting. I'm thinking I'll mount a bell inside the door and put a small hole through the wall for the pull string....no batteries ever...isn't likely to ever fail and if it does it's only going to cost me the price of some new string. If my power goes out it's still going to work. I'm not sure how a visitor is going to react to a "pull rope" sign though. I associate that with "pull my finger".....probably be looking up for buckets of water or something lol.

Hire an Igor to stand on your porch and pull the rope when someone walks up to the door. In addition to provide an non-electric doorbell, he adds a certain ambiance to the place. As long as there's a breeze outside, it shouldn't build up to toxic levels.

Your place would also be the most popular house on Halloween.

That's okay, Starise. One time, they sent me an alternate product. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and found an Eeyore. I was going to send him back, but I thought I'd at least try him out for a while. Now, it just seems like too much trouble to box him up and return him.

My doorbell works just fine. I don't know how he does it, but he manages to make the bell sound sad. You wouldn't believe the number of times I've answered the door to find a salesman standing there choking back sobs as he tries to sell me something. This usually ends with the salesperson turning away, throwing his hands up and moaning, "Why do I bother?"

When kids come by for Halloween, they're glad to see Eeyore at first. By the time they leave, however, they're whining about how their feet hurt, their stomach aches, and they probably didn't get any good candy. It's a big hit with the parents. I just smile and wave.

Yes...a mechanical door bell.... kinda like those old bike bells.... or a cast brass door knocker is the old tried and true way to go.

Or get a dog.... My German Shepard has become my new, best, doorbell/alarm system/advance warning system.
