My New Studio Build ! All advice will be much appreciated !

Hi all

I have become lucky enough to now have my own studio Ive called it  Sanctuary Studio.

I have the live room and control room in a rehersal room called Red Eye Studio !
http://www.redeyestudios.co.uk/

Red Eye has been there for about 20 years with the same owner and has been run in to the ground.
It has finaly been bought over by a friend of mine who will be runing the 2 rehearsal rooms.( still under the name red eye )

He shall be doing the building work on the rooms and I wil be doing my Control Room Etc.. So today I went in and started guting out the controll room takeing the false roof off that the last owner had put in.

I thought it would be cool to put up pics here from start to finish as I do more work and hope some of you can offer advice on accoustic treatment for the Control room

Just so you know nothing in the Control room is mine and I am geting rid of it all as soon as the owner comes to claim it.

The photos arent the best but it will give you an Idea of what I am aiming for

This is the view walking in the studio front door that is a safe door and everything needs painted and carpets on the floor.

Here we turn right in to the live room go in to that open door to the control room. Again all needs painted

This is the entrance to the control room behind the old green curtains on the left there is slideing doors that go in to what will be a chill out room.

Front wall of the Control room towards the live room. The roof above I have taken down today.

Back wall of control room looking through the slideing doors in to what will be a chill out room

Control room now with the old roof down ready for my new suspended roof and for a new out side window to be put in.

Inside of the live room. The plan here is to build a new room in side this room and keep the wood on the back wall behind the drum Riser ( fanastic sound in this room )

Well thats all so far got a lot of work to be geting on with and I hope to have it all finished in the next few weeks

I shall up load some pics as I do the building work paint and start geting the gear all put in.

Has any one any suggestions on Furniture for the Control room ? Its 3500mm across and 3250mm wide

Also any recomendations as to where I should think about puting accoustic foam in the control room would be a great help !

Thanks for reading if you got this far

Norrie :)

Oh wow, you've got your work cut out for you, lol.  Still, I'm sure it will be real nice when done.

Sorry, I don't have enough knowledge to answer any of the questions you asked.

Cool!  I love these type of before and after threads!  If I were you, I'd steal, er, borrow heavily from the look and feel that drumstixkev did.  You DO have a lot to do, but the place looks like it has the potential to be really nice.

Looks great, I'm just learning the sound engineering stuff so I'm not really qualified to give any advise except you really need to get a lava lamp that's mission critical for sure.

I'd love to see how that will progress.

Thanks for all the coment all !

Ive seen kevs build it is fanastic !

At the momment I am thinking I might make a custom oak work station in the control room and keep it nice and clutter free !

Lava lamps are a must haha !

The live room at the momment is sound proof and has accoustic tiles for the walls and has a fanastic sound but because its so old and well lets just say Sh*t looking I am going to use sound Block and make a room in a room and then get a room kit in there !

I am not sure and hopeing for some advice about accoustic treatment for the controll room since that slideing door will be right behind me ( I will be puting big heavy curtains there though ) I am think ing a univrsal audio room kit greay and purple for the control room wals and painting the walls a slate gray like kevs.

I left the construction industry to go full time with the music and I feel like Ive landed right back in my old job haha

I have a friend who had a somewhat similar issue with a pair of sliding doors as well...he ended up getting a couple of movable wall modules and placed them at an angle to each other..sort of ended up with a triangle with the base as the sliding doors....

I have a set of theatrical curtains that I've used as a sound barrier of sorts..

Hey NORRIE . . . Congrats on the new space.  This is so cool I can't wait to see the outcome .  Sounds like you know what the place needs and how to do it.  I took alot of short cuts on my build but I did what I could on the budget I had.  Plus my place is just for my hobby from the real world.  Best of luck and I look forward to seeing the finished studio.

P.S.  I'm no expert but be careful NOT to make your contorl room totally dead. I was told the front half of your room should be the dead half and the back should be diffussed

Im sure you will do an outstanding job and loads of fun seeing the progress.  Seeing you have come from construction, IMO Dont forget to start where everything electrically (Computers, amps, insturments, et...) is going to go or be laid out and get the facility electrical straight first/Dedicated circuits, good grounding, comm wiring, etc... you get the idea. Looks like you have a nice clean slate to start with.  Loads of fun too!!!  Cant wait to watch as ya go

Thanks to all for the kind words I wish you could all take a holiday once its finished and come up to scotland and help me do the recording testing once all my gear is in.

Kev I know the feeling I am on a tight budget my self at the momment I wasnt exspecting to be in a place for the next 6 months so its come around a bit to quick but where theres will theres a way :)

I might have to fire you a pm and ask what shade of Gray paint you used in your build ;) I think it would go very well with the Purple universal audio foam and oak look I am hopeing to go for !

Mike electrics is one thing I actualy wont touch I have a band memmber who is a electrician though so hes going to take care of that side of things and theres a company comeing in middle of next week for the electrical tests and paper work thats needing done by law.

I still have a couple of things to buy for opening and that is a head phone am and my Octo-Capture I am very lucky and have just been endorsed by Audix mics ! I recived my first I5 from them yesterday so I will be trying that out tomorrow and I will be geting a nice set of the DP7 Drum mics and and extra couple of mics for around the studio to add to my colection.

I am excited but its a lot to take on all at once but it will make a change from this set up

Once again thanks to everyone for all the kind words !

I would like to have it at that angle but I am woryed about the sound in the room if I do.

    Any suggestions anyone ?

If it did, could you always put some type of sound deadner up there?  I'm thinking it would be something like a corner in a room (not that I'm an expert)

I would need to accousticly treat the roof anyway so thats not a problem

I hope some one can jump in and give some advice ..... Bulding the roof flat isnt an issue for me to do but it would look cool with an slope

In an ideal world none of the room surfaces would be parallel to prevent resonance. If you're refering to the ceiling visible in picture 3 in your first post then I'd say this is exactly how you want it.

Hi Karyn and thanks for the reply!

Yeah thats the one so it would be better to go at that angle from top of the control room window to just above the fuse box like in that pic ?

I wasnt sure if a flat roof slightly higher would have been a better Idea or not but I do like a sloped roof in the room it stops me feeling boxed in if that makes sence.

Cool lava lamp. Good to go now for sure. I've only recorded at one of the 2 area studios. Your setup looks much more pro. Some awesome gear I'm seeing as well. Good luck.
