My son sings again! - Remix2 11-9-13
He said that Radioactive (Imagine Dragons) was the favorite song at his school (5th grade) and I told him, you know I could cover that and you could sing it? So he was excited :-) It took me about 3 weeks and he sang it today. I'm doing the backup vocals and playing all of the instruments. It was out of my wheelhouse, lots of synthesizers, lots of saturation, lots of bottom end, and the mix is "crushed." But that's the way the cover is, and I tried to be true to it. I feel like we nailed it pretty hard :-) And he is "totally psyched." It's at the top, "Radioactive" **Remix1 - I added some treble to him, and an envelope for him, and also edited out some of his mic technique (or lack there of) **Remix2 11/09, I brought the BGV up a bit, brought the snare (obnoxious part) down some (with EQ) And made some other minor changes. https://soundcloud.com/rockinrobby

I imagine he has no idea how unreal it is that his dad can just do this in his pro studio. Man, how cool! And he can sing too. I have no idea how this is supposed to sound, but if he's happy, that's about all that counts. :) Nice one!

Nice job on this Robbie and son. Radioactive for sure. Also, listened to Green River, an old favorite of mine that I use to play in open D tuning. You did a nice job on your version and I enjoyed it. One thing, sad that Radioactive is the big favorite song at a 5th grade school, but the world is looking for change. Looks like we all might get a part of that change, whether we want it or not. Nice job to you both on this song. Always good to have fun with the kids. Peace and Blessings, John

hey robby, first off: to your son, you will always be the best and coolest dad for ever more! I still am (somewhat) that little boy I was in 5th grade, and if my father would have re-created my favorite song back then in his studio (I believe back then it was Sailor with "Girls Girls Girls") I would think that he is a god or even something bigger, like all gods unite or whatever, in any way the coolest thing any boy can think of! wow! and the biggest respect to you for being a cool dad, listening to your boy and making dreams true. and regarding the 5th grade music taste: how cool is that? I really like "Radioactive", and if this is the favorite song of a 5th grade, then America's future is bright! last, but not least: good work from both of you. I don't know if you needed a lot of polish and /or pitch correction, but the outcome is pretty good. Father and son together singing the same song, this is how good as it gets! One little, tiny point of critizism: with a cover version, I prefer an "own" version over a complete copy. But this is just my sick opion, nevermind!

This is really good in so many ways. First it is just doggone cool that a father and son could get together to do something like this. Secondly, the song sounds good. Lastly, I am guessing that your son must be somewhere around 10 years old and wow he did a terrific job on the vocals. This was a treat Robby.

Oh we had "much" fun doing this! There are lots of little things on this one :-) If one listens carefully one can hear all of the little details :-) It's fun to do one that you take weeks or months to do. You hear all of the little parts that you loved... The thing that I enjoyed most about this one (again outside my wheelhouse?) was that when he listens to it? :-) He says, this is DEFINITELY the BEST ONE YOU'VE EVER DONE DAD!! :-) I know the reasons he says this is because it's one he picked? And one that he sang with me :-) It may or may not be one of my best? But what is important to me is that to him? It is...

Tom, thanks very much for your thoughtful commentary, and I believe you are "spot on sir..." It's his mother's weekend tomorrow, but I'm going to get him for an hour? We're going to work on a science project he's doing next week :-) I bought the supplies today and have the design ready (based on his requirements) and we'll assemble it together tomorrow, good times. He was actually interested in learning the chords for this one, and I showed him. He learned them well and played it, held his interest for about half an hour with no controller or video input ;-) I was very pleased with that. Regarding a unique version, "I hear you." It's a sickness I've had since I've been doing music, I like to be a chameleon... I like to lay down over a cover and assume all of its attributes and recreate it faithfully. But there's something to be said for adding your own twist too so I understand your POV. Thanks very much for listening and for commenting! Robby.

:-) A fun project with the boy :-) Better than some might think based on the title... I worked pretty hard on it. Thanks so much. I really want to get him in to music, but I'm trying to expose rather than "push?" It's a delicate balance? He has the talent, I'm trying to pique the interest... It's a trick in this day of video games. But I have faith that talent and inspiration will find its level... We've had the conversation about those guitars? I play them now? One day, I won't... He can play them or sell them? I would rather he play them... He said he would learn to play them :-D Thinking about the Christmas tune... =========================== I'm thinking about "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem?"

I mixed it again... Based on my ears, The snare was a little harsh so I EQed it. And played w/the BGV (boosted) a bit, some other little changes, mashed up the bottom end a bit more? The bottom end of this song could use a proctologist... It's messed up... It's interesting how you can listen critically to your own ****.... Thanks Timaaaaaayyyy! :-) People should listen to my mad skills on that fretless :-) (I'm a bass player?) And all of the synth details. ;-) And the vocoder for the monster voice on the "Radioactive" part :-) Little details... Also, "that kick?" It's actually not easy to get it to do that... I think it's dialed in pretty good now :-) But I'm always open to critique/opinion? I'm still not good at the whole mixing/mastering aspect. But we do this for the love of the art... It is my passion. I don't make any money from it, but it is what consumes me. I figure I have a few more good years singing, and maybe a few more playing. After that? I may be looking to go quietly in to that good night...

Yes, it was actually a bit of a struggle to get him off of the couch and in to the studio. And then it was how much longer is this going to take? (comping and coaching) At which point I reminded him that his father had been working on it for 3 weeks for several hours a day and I was only asking that he sing his part in "his song" at which point he acquiesced :-) But once he heard it completed, then he was stoked. I bought tickets for a show in Feb, they (Imagine Dragons) are coming to a big arena downtown. He's never been to a big show like that so it will be exciting (good seats :-) That is how bands make their money, touring and selling places out, big bucks.

The first concert I ever took my son to was on his 15th birthday. Joe Satriani, which was his favorite. That was almost 24 years ago.
