WARNING! I'm a n00b so I don't know for sure. I'd say that is accurate except a) you could probably find a way to change the icons withing Session Drummer but you can definitely change the icons on your TRACKS within Sonar to represent the pieces you are using and that is covered in some of the video tuts (if you create a proper drum bus and load all tracks like Seth describes in the Master Class tut). b) The various velocities of each piece you load into Session Drummer should just be there. Try it and if you have problems I'm sure someone more experienced than I can help you out. Cheers.

Beepster:

Yep, I know how to change the track icons and even the icon for a virtual synth. It was just the mixer-channel icons IN Session Drummer that seem to have no option to change them. You've twice said you think there may be a way, and it SEEMS like there should be.

But everywhere else in Cakewalk you change an icon by right-clicking on it. In Session Drummer, right-clicking the icon gives no option to load a different icon. So either that feature is hidden elsewhere, or it doesn't exist.

Re: The various velocities: I think I just figured out what I was doing wrong.

There are two kinds of files you can load for a particular drum: Files that contain a single sample (.flac, .wav), and files containing several samples bundled as a single file (.sfz).

If you load an .sfz file for a drum, your drum will respond by using different samples for different velocities.

If you use a .wav or a .flac, you'll get the same sample, played slightly louder or softer, for every velocity...which doesn't sound as realistic.

So I guess I'll use the .sfz files from now on.

As I said I've only just started so I was merely speculating about the mixer icons but that's more an aesthetic issue than anything. You'll just have to go old school and keep a written track log or something. As far as the velocity issue that's actually useful for me to know not necessarily for using actual SD3 content because that stuff all seems to load automatically but I could see it getting confusing if I wanted drag in third party kit pieces. Glad it worked out for you in the end. Peace.

Okay, to sum up:

RE: Session Drummer 3: It looks like the consensus is:

- Probably does most of what I need, but not perhaps all;

- Can be used for what I want to do, but isn't the best tool for it;

- You probably can't change the icons at the top of the 12 mixer channels within Session Drummer 3 to reflect what samples you've loaded in there, since no one has offered a procedure for doing so;

- Everyone's comfortable loading a whole kit at a time into Session Drummer, but no one seems to know for sure whether loading a particular .flac file into a particular piece loads ALL the appropriate samples for various velocities, or just one sample that's played for all velocities;

- There are better options for what I need.

RE: What the better options are for what I need, it seems like the consensus is: - Superior Drummer 2 (most options and flexibility and good sound)

- BFD2 (also lotsa options and flexibility, a bit pricey, but huge libraries)

- Addictive Drums (cheaper, perhaps less flexible than SD2 or BFD2, but still better than Session Drummer 3, and sounds good)

Does that correctly sum up everyone's views on the topic?
you are correct as far as changing the icon in the mixer section in the gui of sd3.icons dont change.
most find it easier myself changing them in the TV (which automaticaly changes it in the CV)
because face it once you pick your drums,your going to be looking at them in the tv or cv more then you would that mixer section on the sd3 gui.
why is that really a big deal?personaly,i dont.
its a small feature to overlook when contemplating a free kit that comes stock in producer compared to a paid for vsti

No doubt... plus 1 for BFD2 (it is 64 bit now) for your needs... but beware, BFD2 is not for the plug and play kind of guy.... you can get great sounding drum tracks out of BFD2 but you have to know what you are doing with mixing drums... there are tons of expansion kits and even Dave K is releasing his EPIK drums for BFD2 now.....

There is a reason BFD2 is complicated because it MAKES you actually create your own drum mixes.....

Be warned.
