Need DOG advice....

I have a dog that has suddenly discovered how to climb.

This guy>>

EVERY  morning for the past week, I have found him on the outside of the fence. No, he's not digging out because he is still hooked up to his tether and the cable goes OVER the fence.

The fence is a normal 4' picket fence.

I first though he was getting on the shed steps and jumping over from there. So I built a 6' high barrier and screwed it to the shed side temporarily while we went to DC for the weekend. His tether broke so he spent the weekend with a friend. I had also secured a 6' high lattice to the fence beyond the barricade to discourage him from jumping the fence.

Side note: I have seen this critter, from a standing position, jump up into the back of my F-150 with the tailgate UP, using the bumper as a boost point. He can jump cleanly into the truck bed with the tailgate down with no effort at all.

So I got up this morning, and look into the back yard.... there was his NEW tether line going OVER the fence and the 6' barricades.

My only assumption was that he climbed this obstacle. With a bit of encouraging on my part... a slight pressure on the tether, and calling him.... resulted in this critter climbing the lattice like the finest K-9 in pursuit of a criminal. In less than 5 seconds, he was over, and jumped from the 6' top to the ground.

Any ideas on how to corral this dog who has just discovered his love for climbing?

Or... am I in a battle of wits that I'm bound to loose?

What are these wits you speak of?

I had two dogs that learned to jump a 5.5' blockwall fence. The only solution was to build a dog run for them (it did make the cleanup easier on me).

I was thinking electric fence but knowing me... I'd be the one always grabbing hold of it.

My thought was to run a pair of wires from the big bug zapper around the fence line to the gate.... right on top.... !

    But like I said.....

I've known some who have placed angle brackets on the tops of their fence posts and then strung straight wire (not barbed wire) across the top of the fence.  It may make your yard look like a prison yard, but your dog's street cred will skyrocket.

The funny part... I'm guessing that as soon as the top of the fence becomes impassable the digging will commence.

He looks well equipped to dig.

That's probably more practical than my other idea.  That one involved a roof over the yard.  Granted, it would only be 4' high, but that's okay.  If you covered the "yard ceiling" with Astro-turf, your dog might believe that he's flying upside down.  You could play along by flipping upside down and placing your feet on the ceiling.

    It's basic dog psychology.

    That's wouldn't work.

While Herb is bigger, stronger and faster (just like Steve Austin), he'd blow the roof off the place and the dog would be gone.... again.

I agree Bat... It was one of those cases where my sister in law had (not was) the pregnant **** and after the pups were born, a "visit" was arranged at week 12.... and against my pleading and begging NOT TO GET THE DOG.... I was summarily overruled. My girls were even on my side. We were all overruled with my wife saying the dog would teach them some important things like.... taking responsibility......

    Yeah........RIGHT!

Wanna guess just who's RESPONSIBILITY the dog has become?

Yeah... go ahead... take a WILD flipping guess.

Feeding him, or cleaning up his area is a punishment often met with tears, screaming and crying..... and you should see how the girls react when they have to do those jobs....

If he gets loose it's my fault. If he chews something up.... it's my fault..... and on and on.... I'm the man in the house so it's always MY fault.

Don't I know that it would have been better to say.... "Oh look, YOU have 10 puppies..... come girls it's time to go.... NO don't pick up that puppy"...... and I did.... but.....

At this point, I am resigned to having him around for a few more years.... he's half way, perhaps a bit more than halfway through his dog's life.

No more dogs..... but I said that before.... didn't I?

Add: anyone wanna dog sit when we go on vacation in a few more weeks?

Of Course it's the wrong beach!  It's nothing like the Right Beach!  Why, there's sand all over this beach!

If it wasn't the dog or the vacation, it would be something else, like the Internet.  Trust me.  It probably would be the Internet.  And why haven't you taken care of that?  Hmm?

Actually in our case we just went for a taller fence...the fence we had was a 5 foot one..and we had a German Shepherd ...guess what this one did? Jump over the fence. So we put in a 6 foot fence..just tall enough to keep him behind it..

I think making the tether shorter could help but that could be a burden on the dog as he would not have enough room to move on.  Can you just place the dog somewhere without a fence? Or you would not have that option?  Well, you can't really tell him not to do that as that would probably bear no effect to what he is doing.

His tether is 10' long.... shorter qualifies as a leash.

letting him roam the yard only works when I'm out there.....after a few minutes without supervision, he is out of the yard....

I re-arranged the barricade.... I'll see what he does or doesn't do tonight.  The other option might be to leave the gate open.

Face it Herb: you're cooked.  I had a similar problem with, of all breeds, a bloodhound.  My ex and I had 2 of them.  One was more than happy to just idle away her time in the pen area which was surrounded by a 6' high stockade fence.  The other one became a tunneler, patiently digging her way out and getting thru a hole that defied belief that she could get her approx. 130 lb. body thru.  So we put up chain link inside the stockade and buried part of it so she couldn't dig out.  It was at that point that she decided to become a climber.

That's right, this huge beast would actually climb up the chain link and then jump down outside the pen, ending up in the front yard.  And what would she do once she had her freedom?  She'd just amble over to the front door and scratch to come in.  Go figure

The dog I have now is content to just terrorize delivery people by charging the front door, and annoy the hell out of house guests with her incessant need for petting.  Just ask Bapu

Is the fence a chain link variety?  Maybe you could put a sheet of plywood or some vertical pickets in the area where the tether reaches the fence.  That might make it a little more of a challenge for the pup to make it over the obstacle.  If it works, then you can figure out how to decorate the new bit of fence.
