I'm still having a volume issue with Sonar Home Studio.
Last night we tried recording our 1st jam session using Sonar and I can record a track but the playback volume is real low.
Abacab suggested:
If you are using the Windows audio device, you may need to check the "Recording Devices > Properties > Levels" to make sure that is turned up.
I did that and it got a little better but still, low volume.
I set my Realtec Audio card to max volume. (same results)
I turned up the PA to a point where it is way too loud in my music room and the recording playback was a little louder but my PA would have to get Live Rock Concert Loud to produce a normal DB level recording.
 
GTPro3 was easy, just plug and play. No sound level increase needed.
Wonder why Sonar is not working similiar to GTPro3?
 
I want an Easy Button ...

Well the Realtek audio chip in the PC was not really designed for audio recording.  More like intended for a microphone input for recording voice, or using a headset.
 
If you hope to get satisfactory recorded results with music, you should invest in an external USB audio interface.  The input impedance for that will be a better match for your mixer and instruments.

If you are on a really tight budget, you could probably make do with one of the Behringer units, or for even better features, the Focusrite units are affordable, are usually well regarded.  As you can see, the prices range from $30 to over $1000, depending on the features and number of inputs provided.  But anything would be better than the crappy audio chip built in to the PC.

I loaded  GTP3 on my Win 10 pc and it works.
In fact, the GTP3 program db level for recording is normal but still can't get Sonar Home Studio db up to normal ...

Ok, the only real differences that I can think of between GTP3 and Sonar Home Studio as far as recording goes would be driver related.
 
Is your new PC a laptop or a desktop? does it have a built in webcam? can you tell us the make and model#?
 
If there is a built in webcam then there is going to be a built in microphone to go with it, I suspect GTP3 is using the input that your PA is plugged into, and SHS might be using an onboard webcam mic for it's input.
 
FYI, turning up the computer's volume control usually will not increase the recording level.
 
If you look at the Mix View in GTP3, just under the label for Track 1, there is another small white box that should have the active input listed there, by hovering the mouse pointer over it, or clicking on it, you will see which input device GTP3 is using for Track 1.
 
In SHS if you open a session that you've tried to record in, check and see if it's using the same input device.

Redstick, what was the problem with your old XP computer?
 
I ask, because by your description of your recording method with GTP3, you were not using "per project" audio folders, that would mean that in your Cakewalk Projects folder you would have many, many, many CWP files, and ALL of the audio files for all of those CWP files would be in your Audio Data folder.
 
I'm just guessing here, but could that computer's problem just be a full hard drive? If you recorded a stereo track for a few hours a week for 10 to 14 years I would think that your Cakewalk Projects folder might be pretty friggin' huge.
 
If that's the issue, it is easily remedied.

Managed to load GTP3 on the Win 10 OS
I can record with it but cannot read my GTP3 .cwp files

I was able to load GTP3 on my Win 10 pc.
It works better than the Sonar app.
I can't get the sonar app volume up but the GTP3 has great volume.
While trying to get Sonar volume up I tried checking all the interfaces and everything is all the way up.
Like I said, GTP3 works great but not Sonar? Go figure ...

PC specs:
Dell XP Tower desktop
CPU - Intel Quad Core i7-8700 @ 3.20Ghz 3.19Ghz
16GB RAM
64-bit OS, x64 based processor
 
I'm new to DAW so pls enlighten me as to what is an external USB audio interface and how would I connect one for recording?
Currently I'm plugging in all my inputs to the PA then using Record Out (L,R) going to my Microphone input on my PC.
