Need some opinions

This is a song I have been working on for a while. I posted it awhile back. Most of the comments revolved around the singer sounding like she wasn't into the song or was reading the words.

Original song version here>>>>>  http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12024993

I had the chance to play this for the president of Nashville Songwriters Association and then to discuss the song in detail . His comments on the original were very similar to the comments by many here.

So, taking his advice, I reworked the song dropping the  unneeded solo, and recorded it again, this time with a different singer....and in a lower key.

I have done very little to the vocal track other than melodyne on a few notes that were only a few clicks off...and adding eq and verb.

I would appreciate the viewpoints and commentary on this "newer" version on both the overall mix as well as the vocals specifically.

New version>>>>  http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12024980

Thanks for your time.

Hi Herb. Nice song and pristine, very polished sounding on the crappy speakers I'm listening on. Great performances all round.
The vocal is too loud for me though and doesn't seem to be sitting in the mix.

Daryl.... thanks... I thought it might be a few db too loud but for now, I wanted the vocals to be clearly audible.  That was the sticking point on previous versions.

I will back it down a few db in the final version headed out the door.

Herb, this has that "radio ready" sound that Nashville likes.  As Daryl said, the vocal is very present, but that's the way it has to be to be taken seriously in Nashville.  I'd leave it alone for a while and see what transpires.  All in all, this is very professional sounding.

I remember hearing this the first time. The second mix is way better than the first mix. The vocals are a real improvement as well over the other one. I thought the first vocalist was ok too  maybe just needed a retake or two to shape things up. No doubt about the second vocalist though.

    Hey Herb

    Very Nice Song.

Im on my earbuds cause Im too lazy to get up and go to the real speakers

I tried to listen to it as far as singing (emotions, dynamics, etc...)
I loved her voice and how it goes with music.

The only thing I could get out of it thru these tiny things stuck in my ears was - I really would love to hear more driven emotions as it goes into the chorus sections slowly drifting back to how she is singing in the verse parts.

I try to listen to the story (with the way emotions and feelings are delivered) as it is sung but slightly get the feeling she is still unfamiliar with what shes singing to us (Make sense?)

Overall I really enjoyed what you have so far

This is a really good recording. Instruments are perfectly mixed and everything is clear. Your singer sounds better towards the end of the song than at the beginning and middle. Almost like she got more confident as she went. She has a great voice!

Also, I don't think her voice is too loud in the mix, especially for country tunes.

The song is crying for a vocal harmony arrangement...

That said, this is a wonderful arrangement of a very good commercial sounding song... killer production Herb... I know you're proud of this... great singer too...

i do believe we are going to throw some harmony
on the tune as well as more lead vox trax will be recorded.

I'm completely out of touch with what is or isn't commercial these days but this is a very nice song and a great sounding production/mix.

I think it sounds fantastic Herb.

I still yearn to hear some more emotion in the vocals.

Of course, if that's all here is left to make comment on... it means that everything else is so good that it just flows along like it's easy.

    best regards,

    Thanks Mike...

In reference to the OP... the guy in Nashville made the comment that the singer needed to "sell the song" to the listener with emotion, and feeling.  That's the magic quality we are shooting for here. It was lacking in the first versions of this tune.

I'm not as concerned about the mix as I am the emotional feeling side of the delivery.

    Hi Herb,

I think your mix sounds great and is very "Nashville".  Country music is about the lyrics most often, and as such I do not find the vox too loud at all.  In fact, I wish she was a tad more compressed so I could get every detail out of her words.  Maybe it's just my system, but I lost intelligibility of a few words.

    Good job my friend!

    Cheers!

Tony.... hummmm... I'll look into that a bit when we add the rest of the vocal tracks into this. definitely gotta understand the words in a country song.  Its harder for me to hear that since I know the words.... but yeah, some singers will pronounce some words differently that make it a bit of a guessing game

    thanks

I like the new version better. The arrangement is more light spirited and rootsy. The singer is unsure sounding and has no emotion in her delivery. I'd have her work on it for a week or so and record a new vocal track. Adding harmonies in the song would be a huge plus too.

This sounds great. The vocal is a little loud for my tastes, though. Harmony would definitely have this ready for the radio. Very pretty melody. Only listened to the 2nd version.

Herb I haven't heard the other version you talk about but this is really nice a sort of that's how a country song should sound. In my opinion though I think the beautiful played violin is a tiny bit to low and the girl is a tiny bit to high and the "S" are to distinct so you should take down the EQ around 1200 a bit. Otherwise a lovely song.

The second version is much better than the first. However, the vocals actually quiver at times and sound worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. The fiddle doesn't sound too bad but you should drop the lame steel guitar and dobro.

    scotty, chas, eko, pete, thalweg...

Thanks for listening... we will be taking all that into consideration as we record some new tracks in the near future. This version is just a preliminary to get ideas from other musicians as to what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong.... all comments are appreciated and considered.

I believe this vocal track  was more along the lines of asking me if what she did was in the ballpark for what I am looking for. We have been discussing this and are moving forward towards that goal.

Stay tuned... the "closer to finished" version will be out in a few weeks I'm guessing... also depends on everyone's holidays schedules and available time.

    Herb,

What a difference between your original and new versions.    Sounds great, The LVox may be a slight bit too present for the rest of the mix but it works.   I agree it needs some harmonies but it stands on its' own as is.   Great song.

I agree that some harmony would make this and perhaps some background vocals to compliment what the lead and harmony are doing. I think the chorus could use a B3 (or more perhaps I should say in the higher range of things)as well just to beef it up a little but some vocals may have the same effect. Good work though!

Really like the song.  Both version are really good.  The 2nd has a different feel - I guess I like it better, but it's tough cause the first one is excellent too.  I like the singer in the 2nd better.
