New 64 Bit I7 PC - Performance Question?

Hi Guys,

I recently upgraded from my Q6600 Quad Core to a new I7 processor, and went 64 bit on Windows 7 to make use of the 8Gig of RAM I now have. The Old PC just kept dying and so although it was still a good PC, I bought a new one, and will take my time reparing the old one without the worry of losing work if I don't back up every 5 minutes.

Anyways, I installed 64bit Sonar 8.5 for the first time, and have installed afew of the plugs I own. I have been made aware of issues with IL plugins which I'm hoping jbridge will fix, but the shocker was when I loaded Pentagon, which wouldn't load at all. I know I can reinstall it and try again, which I will, but even perhaps more worrying after shelling out for a new PC is that Z3TA is reading 10-12 percent on the CPU bar IN IDLE!!!! It's also hitting scary levels once I play it - I really don't remember it being this CPU intensive on my old computer. so is it a 64bit thing, or are any of you guys getting better performance out of it?

Any feedback would be really appreciated - I'm actually worried now I could have saved money on RAM if teh 64 bit experiment fails. as I've seen for others here.

Thanks!!

Jbridge was not a big success for me...

I ended up installing the 32 bits version of Sonar which I now use the most.  If I know I won't be using 32 bits plugins, I then use the 64 bits version

Win 7 64 bits, Intel core2 quad Q9550 (2.83ghz)
Fireface 800, Sonar X1 Producer

Eddie,

I just had a very similar situation with my AMD Phenom II Quad Core.

I was getting the 10%-12% CPU idle and jumping up to the 30%-40% range with Dimension Pro and other synths. I also ran Guitar Rig and Kore Player in standalone and was getting very high CPU usage, so I figured it wasn't just a Sonar thing. In searching the forums I found these 2 threads:

http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?&m=1862515&mpage=1

http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1861804

The first one gives optimization tips for your system and the second is for turning off core parking in the registry.

I went through my system and shut down tons of startup processes and services, optimized disk performance, and discovered that 3 of my 4 cores were parked and not doing me any good. After all was said and done I went back into Sonar and loaded Dimension Pro to find that where I was getting in excess of 35% CPU usage I was now getting 4%-7%!

Big difference.

BTW - thanks to everyone that posted in those threads. It was a (computer) life saver.

Hope that helps you out. I'm sure it will.

Robert

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for bothering to reply.

I realise there does seem to be more of a 32/64 bit issue than I first thought.

Robert, I will try the suggestions in those threads. and hopefully get the results you di.

Appreciate it guys.

Cheers,

Ed

Definitely go through them and see what you end up with after optimizing. I was amazed how much of a difference it made. Surely other people must be having these issues too.

Post your results if you can.

Pentagon is a DXi plugin and is native 64 bit. Its not effected by Bitbridge or jBridge

You may nee to install it again from the DVD. You just can't move the dll files from DX's like you can with VST plugin dll's.

Use the info found in the SONAR 8.5 fine print thread at the beginning of the SONAR forum and it will explain what is actually happening in connection with SONAR's CPU meter

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info, don't know why I asumed it still a 32bit synth - will do as you suggest now, appreciate the help.

Also I'm happy to report with the CPU Parking Tweak, things are looking ALOT healthier!

I know this can be a labour of love. but I have to say all the support I get when I need help om here is fantastic.
Thanks!

Ed
