New SMB Tune/Universal Travel

James & I were pretty busy working on this one! Lots of odd meters going on in this. It's an instrumental depicting movement in all it's various forms.

James Griffiths - Electric guitar, Bamboo flute, strings, and mixing.

Me - Acoustic guitar, percussion, and bass.

Please click on the Slow Marching Band link below.

We really appreciate and enjoy your listening and taking the time to comment on this song. It's what it's all about!

    Yo Larry.

Really good, bouncy instramental. It grooves like the best of Shadofax and the Grateful Dead with the riffs tightly synched to the underlying rythm. I like the way your bass part alternately plays counter melodic lines and holds down the bottom end. Kinda Leshian.

    Sonically crisp.

    Good all the way around.

    Cheers,

    Bert

Wow, really cool song. I love the change up at 2:15. The song holds together really well thematically. Methinks James's been listening to too much Tull...in a good way.

    Excellent work guys.

I think this is my favorite SMB song so far. The acoustic guitar sounds fantastic - the Taylor 414ce I assume. Larry, I'm interested in your recording technique on this, how you did it.

The bamboo flute does some tasty melodies. Starting around 2:30, the electric guitar comes in, and that tone is perfect for the song.

Really balanced, full sounding mix. Since this mix is better than any I've ever done, it would be madness for me to give any crits - I don't have any anyways

    Great job guys.

Hi Bert - good to see you, you're always a great supporter of our music, that's much needed and appreciated.

Dan - thanks; yes, I have listened to Tull a good deal. I mentioned to Larry that I was in two minds about the flute, but it fitted so well, I thought, if Ian ain't going bother writing new stuff anymore, what the heck?

Hey Doug - many thanks indeed, very nice to get such praise. I'll let Larry tell you all about the acoustic - I agree actually, I think this is the best sound he's captured yet. It's a dream to mix, 'cos I don't have to tweak it at all, just add a little 'verb to taste.

    0.00000002 cents:

OK, extremely introspective, delicious, masterful, intertwining, and sensitive guitar work and winds ... and such exquisite percussion! (A Vox-less wonderland)

Flute may be a bit too-centered at places (for my ears), slightly conflicting with one of the stronger leads, especially at 1:35. I'm almost thinking it could be more monophonic, to set off the richer electrics.

I love the playful guitar work, generous melodies, and wide-dynamics, and panning ... especially with these Adam monitors.

IMHO: Sweet dynamics, repetitions, and fragile transients better suits this song for the (home) theater or living-room (vs. the car with all the "loudness wars"). This piece takes me where I need to travel.

(Such rare exquisite quality is where many of us wish to be but cannot ever reach.)

Yes. Haunting delight. Very nice. It moves nicely from each part and yet goes into new terrain. I really love some of that dissonance in the section from 1:00 to 2:00 and then again in the second half. You guys are GOOD!!!

totally! has a cool 60s vibe with the flute, then the strings take it into new realms entirely. James' solo is one of pure quality, not overplayed, just fits in perfectly. Larry has to be the best acoustic player on here by a mile, just an utter joy to hear. Another winner, gentlemen!

    Larry, James

This sounds like a logical development of the 'Superhero' theme. Crystal clear guitar recording as ever. That clay drum thing sounds excellent and another benchmark mix from James throughout.

An excellent foil for James' folksy electric guitar work, I love the harmony line between bass and lead on the outtro and the flute was tasty icing (frosting) on a delicious cake.

Thank you Rick! Larry laid out a really interesting track just with acoustic, percussion & bass. It was a joy to work on, finding those little things that make up the track.

Hi Mark - that's really kind of you, thanks. I agree about Larry's playing, and the sound is so full on this too.

Hello Jon, much obliged to you young man! Thanks for the thumbs up on the mix.

I feel that some of the arrangement and instrumentation sounds a bit random and incoherent at times. I'm hearing some pitch conflictions starting around 1:00.

The production quality of this song is very good tho. Performances are nearly flawless here. But like I said, I think some of the arrangement and melodies could be a little more thought out.

Kevin - I mic the git in stereo using an AKG c414B XL II and a AKG c451B. I'm too old & stupid to try anything else at this point....

MaMa - Well if it makes you feel any better, James gave me a good thrashing the first time I sent him this song as the chords I orginally used during the strumming part, my fingers felt and sounded like they was glued together.... Thanks fer stoppin' by to listen and comment. You always make our day lady!!

Larry - James! Don't you guys ever take any time off? Get a job man, you're bringing me down because I'm here at work and you are home making music. It's just not fair.

OK, I'm calming down. This is very nice, well played, well mixed. I think the acoustic volume could come down a little around 2:30. But other than that, this is sweet number. The flute is killer and the acoustic is nice.

Great job guys, love this one. And take a break once in awhile, at least until I can retire.

Hi Linda, thank you kindly! It is mostly real instruments...the flute is from Dimension LE, but I did use a real pitch wheel on it..

Thanks Daryl! I'll take a fresh listen to the section you mentioned. As for slowing down, umm not yet, sorry - Larry's got another two on the stove already!

I love the garbage can lid in the right speaker. All jokes aside, man you guys crank em out fast. Larry has pretty much nailed down the acoustic recording it seems, just stunning acoustic recording. Very unusual main melody but it is wonderful and definitely gives the vibe you were going for here. Reminded me of cruising down the road occasionaly slowing down to check out the sites then hitting the gas again. Flute sounds convincing to me. Great work gents!
