Long, yes, but it really held my interest all the way through.  Some sections stood out more than others, but I felt it worked composition and performance wise as a whole too.

As far as crits go, you've already heard from folks with far better ears than mine, but I would echo the remarks on the drums.  The parts fit well, but did not measure up to the rest of the music tonally or mix-wise.  That aside, I really enjoyed the listen.

This reminded me in parts to early genesis and your guitar at times reminded me of Steve Hacket.

Your guitar playing is indeed awesome and you're a very accomplished player of other instruments too, but i have to agree about the mix not sounding as good as it could for this sort of music.

The drums are the biggest culprit to my ears. I reckon when you sort the drums out the rest will more or less fall into place and this track will really shine.

Musically i enjoyed it a lot.

Very cool tune. Great guitar playing and nice synths. Production is pretty good, but there are moments where it could probably be melded a bit better, but it does help keep the interest level there as it transitions and yeah the drums could be eq'd a bit better.

I find this song to be well performed.  There are some mix issues, but it's not far off.  I'll bet it was fun to record.  Your guitar tones are luscious.  Good job.

All the best,
Lynn

Flavio Thanks for digging this out and the feedback. That's really cool and I apprediate it. I've written a few tunes that have a bit of a prog element to them but this is the first time I ever did anything this long and proggy. It was quite a challenge and a very humbling learning experience.

Danny Thanks for stopping by. I'm gonna go back and listen for that click noise. You know chorus on guitars is such a specific thing. Sometimes a nice detuned approach sounds great on picked stuff and horrible with strummed chords where you want just a nice shimmer. I got lazy and did the set it and forget it. There are of course other drifting/tuning issues as you have stated as well.
Thanks for the nice words and I'll also take this time to say thanks for some great posts out here. Your post on how to set up a template for easy drummer to mix kit pieces was brillaiant and it's made life a lot easier.

Jon Thanks for listening and the nice comments. I won't disagree with you about the drums. I actually spent most of the time with this song tweaking those drums for that horrible sound too! I'm liking your idea of getting the drums sound pretty much wrapped up and then proceeding with the other instrumentation. Actually, I've been doing the reverse by plopping the tracks down raw and once all the tracks are recorded and panned I'd go back and try and make them fit sonically with the rest of the music. I appreciate your valuable input.

James Thanks for the listen and kind words. I run my bass through an old fletcher Joe Meek and then into an avalon U5. I think it's one of the instruments I'm starting to get a grip on recording wise. Since I'm in a gabby mood I'd also like to say thanks again for that compressor lesson last year. I'm like that old lady in the Franks hot sauce commercial now. "I put that beep on everything" It is a tough upside down mix and I started working on the rebuild but I had to stop and work on other projects because I just got so tired of hearing this song.

Phil Thanks for listening and commeting. Your experienced ears are as good as anybody's and I really appreciate your valuable input.

Burgermeister Thanks man.

Hey that's what the Burgermeister does best! Unless there's a toy in it for him of course.

John I love Steve Hackett. Thanks for listening and the nice comments. Mix and drums it is.

Tap Thanks for listening and commenting. I agree on the melding. Pondering some of my proggy favorites right now and you know a transition that's not just musically and rythmically sound still has to have that something that makes sense emotionally. Like I said above, this was a great learning experience for me.

Lynn Thanks for dropping in and the nice comments. It was great fun playing over this progression. I experimented a lot with the H3000 in this. That box has so many dramatic effects but also some fantastic subtle ones as well.

Thank again guys and Merry Christmas!

great arrangement and excellent playing, but it was difficult to listen to... the rhythm guitar is out of tune... not crazy about the drum sound either... very cool piece of music ... thanks and Merry Christmas...

The guitar seems kind of out of tune to my ears. Hard to listen to.

Some amazing music here. Guitars, synths are awesome. Time/tempo changes....wow. Cool music. I think others have mentioned the drums (kick needs boosting and less compression) Mix is clear but sounds very serious and rigid. Not sure how to remedy other than play with space and EQ a bit.
