New Tune - Royer Ribbon Mic Test

No thanks to my UPS driver, who didn't bother to ring the door bell when he came to deliver it, I got my new Royer R-101 last night when I picked it up at the UPS depot.
I recorded this right out of the box. The mic is new, the tune is new. The fiddle and guitar were recorded with the ribbon mic, the bass went direct.

The mic has definitely captured your playing skills to my ears it has a slightly softer edge than other bits you have recorded.

Thanks for sharing and have loads of fun.

Hi Scott, this sounds great, sound and tune. Fiddle sounds really "earthy" . Guitars sound good too, not so bright as with the nt-5. I personally prefer this sound to something squeaky clean and modern. Your fiddle playing, or should  I  say virtuosity on the violin, reminds me of the BBC program "the transatlantic sessions", where the likes of Aly Bain, Jerry Douglas and Scott Nygard play traditional "celtic" music. You would fit right in.

    Greetings, Rik

Sounding great, Scotty.  Liked the new tune, and the instruments all sounded crystal clear, even on the little pc speakers.

    GT,
Thanks, but how did it translate using this mic?

    Wookie,
You're right and it did exactly what it was supposed to do...round off the edges and warm the sound.  I'm so not disappointed with this mic.

    Rik,
Thanks man! Those are some pretty big names there. I'm honored.

    Phil,
Thanks for checking it out! Glad it came across okay.

That sounded terrific sonically and the playing was delightful.  If you wanted a brighter treble, ribbon mics can take EQ, and lots of it, without difficulty.

Although you aren't soliciting comments about reverb, I would suggest that you check out ValhallaRoom.  I think that it would really complement the acoustic instruments better than what you are currently using on this track.  Just my $0.02.

Man that fiddle is "alive." The mic sounds amazing. I'd say it's a "blue ribbon..."

What kind of pre-amp are you using?

Thanks J. The great thing about this mic is that I can just play into the back side of it if I want more treble. It doesn't seem to require much EQ. Thanks for the verb tip too.

My 2 scents are, "Altiverb..." Convo is the way to go baby... And you can use samples from "anywhere..." You can put yourself in the Sidney Concert hall, or in a cave in Java, or an Opera house, they have hundreds of different spaces. But it's not cheap... Audio Ease has a lot of other cool plugs too.

Thank you very much, Robster. I really like the mic so far and I think the new fiddle likes it too. This mic has a lot of potential. I use an ART DPS II preamp.

    Frank,
Thank you for your kind words. I am glad you like the new magic wand I call a mic...or is it a mic that I call my magic wand? Either way, thank ye kindly!

    Larry,
You probably have a valid point there.

Hi Scotty.  This mic appears to have a very neutral and transparent sound.  It's missing some of the bottom end I remember in your other recordings.  Very nice and I like the tune.
