New to X3 after years of Pro Tools

Morning everyone (depending on which side of the pond you live)

Just wanted to share my experience with the community.

I've been a Pro Tools guy since forever. Got tired of it and also got fed up with AVID's policy. Pro Tools is a fantastic machine - there are good reasons why it is the industry standard, but I was just bored with the workflow and needed a bit of a change. I am also a bit of a contrarian myself and conforming to the Apple / PT bandwagon was not exciting enough for me! I embarked on a quest to discover my next DAW (new tools make me more creative) and tried everything under the sun. NOTE: Sonar wasn't even on the radar at that point (haha) I thought it wasn't "pro" enough. So, anyway. After dabbling with a few programs (Mixbus, Samplitude, Digital Performer, Cubase) I decided to try X3 because why not. Conducted some blind tests and subjected my poor friends to them too. Results: my ears and almost everybody else said that what I did on X3 was the most pleasant and balanced mix.
Couldn't believe it. But fact is: I don't know if it's the workflow, the audio engine or the inherent sound of the platform, but my mixes now seem to come together easier and faster and they sound more exciting and closer to the money than my limited mixing skills would allow me to.
Would I like it to be more stable and less buggy? Yes.
Is it different? Yes
Am I enjoying X3 immensely? YES!

Just my two cents

(P.S. As  new user I will be bombarding the forum with questions because I still feel a bit incapacitated, new DAW and all, so please be patient, ok?)

Have a nice day!

Welcome Jordan!

Although I have not asked a lot of questions I have learned a lot just by reading the forums. There are pros here who know this DAW inside and out and are freely willing to share their knowledge. As a hobbyist I really appreciate that!

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

Hello Jordan and "welcome".
I was a long time PT user also (similar experience with Avid) and I thought it was "THE" Professional choice for DAW, years ago I thought it would be straight forward and user friendly, like the DSP Cards etc. But as with you going to the Mac direction wasn't for me? It's a great system (PT11), which is interesting that Protools finally went 64bit, whereas 32bit architecture was there main platform. Starting out with Producer 8.5 (currently X3d) it has been great using the Sonar software, and I have had some issues as with others but in the long run I've stayed with Cakewalk.

The Forum members have been extremely helpful to me, I like the fact that most of the members that have helped me, would chime-in again and again to see if the issues that I'm having worked out! Plus the On-line Cakewalk University has a lot of instructions, even YouTube. Once your up and running, it gets easier. A friend Of mine who also switched from PT (native) to Sonar X3 Producer needed help with the new software, found it easy & straight forward and now producing music with all the tools.

There are many great DAW's out on the market, but when it comes to a Wave.File you can transport to anything and anyone back and forth. Sonar is a great software, with so many options & Tools, "Time to have fun"..............

I always wanted to be a Protools user but back when choosing a DAW I was on PC and Protools was'nt.
I went with Sonar 6 and been with them for most upgrades.
Now it looks like Avid have been propping up the actual worth of its company and not disclosing to shareholders the actual situation. Doesn't look good.
google this;  Avid postpones its 4Q earnings release
as I cannot show link on my new user account

Welcome aboard! I don't think you will find a forum so full of people that are knowledgeable and helpful. You came at a good time. Since the buyout, it seems like the company itself has been going to great efforts to be more supportive. Even the administrators of the forum have been present a lot more. That said, GO MAKE SOME MUSIC AND ENJOY!

Re: New to X3 after years of Pro Tools 2014/01/19 10:37:04 (permalink)
@trtzbass,

Welcome.  As stated above, this forum has been a God send to me and others, and folks here in the forum work remarkably diligently to help each other.  The Cakewalk staff also quite frequently pop in to various threads.

On top of that, the product itself has gone through a remarkable transformation, from release 8.5.3 until now, with X3d.  This current release is absolutely fabulous, and they have been very aggressive in having released multiple maintenance updates since the release of X3.  Even there, they were able to make what would normally have been the base version release of X3 into an already applied X3a, so that even the initial release of it had maintenance applied.

So, read the documentation, look for and watch the videos, consider picking up some professional videos or one of the books on Sonar, and have a blast.

One thing, many of us modify our forum user profile, to add our system specifications to the 'signature/footer' section of it, and also check the box that tells the forum software to include those specs at the bottom of all of our posts.

The reason for this is that it helps others to diagnose issues, without first having to ask a bunch of questions about what kind of system they are running.  You can look at the bottom of my post, or others, for an idea of what I am recommending that you do.

Take care, I look forward to assisting you in your growth as a Sonar user, if I am able to.  You are now a member of our rather dysfunctional family.  :)

The reality is that you can make music with any DAW that exists today, just like you can drive to the supermarket in any car. However, some cars are more fun to drive than others .

I have a friend who was unhappy with PT and the Mac, so he switched to Cubase on Windows. It still didn't "click" for him. I advised him to try Sonar. Sonar?!? Well, he did, and the first thing he said after he'd figured it out was "it put the fun back into recording."

As to better-sounding mixes, I have a theory about that. I've often found it's the shoot-from-the-hip instincts that make music exciting - that first take before you started thinking about it too much, the time when you were messing with a mix and did things you weren't "supposed" to do. Sonar's workflow makes it easier for me to capture initial impulses and ideas. It's made a huge difference in songwriting because I can get the basis of a song down really quickly, while the inspiration is still there. I do end up editing and tweaking, but they have a firm foundation.

Regarding stability, I think you'll find over time that some bugs are pilot error, and others are more like annoyances that have relatively easy workarounds. There are very few "show stoppers;" those tend to be only for specific workflows, and I have yet to find one that matters to how I make music (and I push Sonar pretty hard) where I couldn't figure out a workaround. Certainly, Cakewalk's pace of updates is pretty amazing these days.

You'll be happy with the switch. No software is perfect, but Sonar has a high inspiration factor, and that counts for a lot.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

Welcome. I don't think you will regret your decision. I am a faithful Sonar user, though I don't use it as much as I should. I have looked at PT 11 and at all the hardware available to go along with it... and if I ever want to go first class with PT.. I am going to spend some major bucks, not so with Sonar. Besides that, I really think that Sonar is better, if not better, more diverse, no better! It is more conducive to creativity. Then there is the residual rebelliousness from when I was younger, I never considered myself a lemming and find it offensive, not so much that I make anything out of it, but that inevitable unspoken "ahem" when someone tells me that they use Pro Tools. You can hear almost always hear it between the lines, not always. "I don't use a "toy", I use Pro Tools"". Maybe it is just me.
Somehow PT got in the big studios and cultivated an image of being the only real professional DAW. I think that is changing but change is slow and hard. It says a lot for you that you switched. I have been in business (not music related) for over 25 years and a lot of people will stay with a company they don't even like, people just generally don't like change.
It is good to not be part of the herd sometimes! Again, welcome. You will find a lot of helpful people here. There is also the Coffee House if you need a dose of silliness!

Welcome!

This thread is an interesting read; many nice points. Another point is that music is universal and not (pro)prietary, and there are many who are (avid) hobbyists, etc., without desire to be "(pro)fessional" but simply enjoy music for what it is. The topography changes a lot when people can do this with fairly simple hardware setups and create works of the same quality. [puns intended, couldn't resist ]

You came onboard at a good time... X3 is a real gem in many ways... and this forum definitely the #1 asset to Cakewalk!

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Welcome to Sonar, Jordan.  If you are curious about what kind of results you can get from CW, go to the Songs forum and listen to what's being made on Sonar.  I think you'll be amazed at the talent and diversity of music there.  Regardless, you've come to the right place.

All the best,
Lynn
