Newbie X3 Addictive Drums questions

Just downloaded X3C and I have Addictive Drums and can use as a stand alone but how do I configure it for X3 to use it?  Forgive me if this questions has been asked but I looked and kept getting results for addictive drums and X1 or X2

When you open X3, you should see it listed when you go to ad a synth.  If you don't see Addictive drums as one of your synths listed, go to your plug-in manager and re-scan plugins.  If that does not work, make sure the folder that contains the vst file for AD is among the folders Sonar scans.  If this sounds foreign to you, let me know, and i will post more detailed instructions.

If you have AD dll in the VSTplugins folder X3 will scan it.

Not sure where the dll is located I downloaded everything as a stand alone, I have added both XLN Audio folders in program files and program files 86 and still no syth for AD.  Would anyone know the name of the dll so I can search for it?

It's not a strange place. VST is a software technology created by Steinberg so many programs will create that folder by default. Many installation programs allow you to change default locations to one of your own choice. As long as Sonar knows to scan that folder that's the main thing.

Next newbie questions for AD is can the step sequencer be used with the drums sounds of AD?  And if I am correct AD does not have a way to setup custom drum patterns correct?

I'm still relatively new to the world of AD, but to answeere your questions to the best of my knowledge:

    1) Yes, AD can be used with the step sequencer.  It acts a little wonky if you use a drum map with step sequencer, but I never use drum maps when using step sequencer.

2)I know of no way to set up custome drum patterns in the program itself.  They offer low cost midi packs to ad more patterns.  You can use any midi drum pattern to trigger AD.  SOme third parties sell patterns already mapped to AD or you can create a drum map.  A couple of users have already made drum maps for AD to make playing standard midi drum patterns easier.  I think one user was subjacent.

AD works very well with Step Sequencer (sans drum map).  One thing I recommend to do to get around that issue is to set up a "master" blank pattern with all the triggers in it so you have access to all the sounds in the sequencer.  Took about 15 minutes to set up but it has already saved 10 times that on the first song.

I have been using the step sequencer with drums sounds out of my Motif XS but AD drums sound so real so if I could do the same process as with my keyboard AD will be my new way of programming drums

Try this: Top right corner in AD there is an Audio/Midi set up button -> Look for your keyboard or midi device under active midi inputs -> select it and test it. If you have no sound and your keyboard is set for general midi: click the ? menu at the top right -> map window -> top left under preset drum maps select general midi.

Step 1: Insert an instanc of AD.  Make sure to check "midi source", "track folder"
Step 2: select your midi source track and then go to "view" and step sequencer.  This will open up the step sequencer with just note numbers
Step 3: replace note names with respective kit piece. Example: change "C3" to "kick"
Step 4: go to the "?" in AD and choose "Open keymap" to see what notes the other parts of kit are mapped to
Step 5: Add rows to step sequencer by hitting "+" in step sequencer interface.
Step 6: Export as track template.  Although i would go farther by setting up commonly repeated setup items like assigning to individual tracks and buses  and saving as a project template first

Thanks for taking care of that dub - exactly what I did.  I have used my 1 measure step sequencer template to build a lot of drum patterns.

I don't use the step sequencer that much for AD, but I find it handy to have this sort of thing already done since doing it whene you are about to create just kind of ruins the mood. The great thing about it is once you do it once, it's done.  I'm still tweaking my AD master template.  Trying to decide whether to use the bus system within AD.

I went ahead and sent everything but the master out to Sonar - I used the mixer in AD to turn down the levels (you will peg your meters in sonar if you don't).  It gives me a couple of choices in how I want to mix/apply effects.  Still deciding if its best to get levels in AD and apply effects in Sonar or just do it all in Sonar, but for now I will probably do it all in Sonar.

Never tried putting the whole thing into a track template. Might be easier to go try, but
    - when you have a folder and save a <Track template>, does it save everything? all the subtracks, the synth settings AND the step sequencer layout??
    ...seems like magic!

I think I have resolved my issue of no kit loading with launching AD but I don't understand why.  I installed AD with one profile and when I launch AD the startup kit is ready to play but if I login using another profile and launch AD no kit launches and I have to build it from scratch.  Can someone tell me where would I go to launch the start up kit when starting AD from the other profile?  Thanks to everyone I was able to create the template and make custom beats it is a lot of work but I did it

Click on the Kit dropdown menu -> save as ->By saving a preset of your choice as "Startup.ADpreset", it will be automatically loaded when you load AD. I'm not sure about your profile issue but that's how to save a start up kit,

The key for me is making sure the track is as clean as possible. gates and filters help with this sort of thing.  i usually duplicate my track first so that I can mangle it.  You are niot looking for good sound  but rather very distinct separation and strong volume.  here is a good blog piece from cakewalk:

    Quick way:
    - Insert Addictive drums as a Simple Instrument track
    - Drag the MIDI clip into the Addictive track
    - Enter C3 in the Pitch field of the Event Inspector module in the Control Bar to set all the notes to the correct number to drive the kick drum.
