Noob Question about using a MIDI track to trigger my Keyboard

I sure hope this is an easy fix, and I'm just too stupid to figure it out. May I ask for help?
I have just one MIDI track, and I checked the events list, & there is nothing in the list except note data.
No other data is present (volume, velocity, sysx, etc.).

I imported the Alesis 6.1 insert file as the instrument definition, and for the track I selected for output bank Preset 1, patch 6.
But when I play the MIDI track, it tells the keyboard to play General MIdi bank, patch 0, a harpsichord sound.  No matter what I
do with the MIDI track selections, the keyboard will revert to GenMidi.

The instrument definition came from the alesis q6.1 insert file provided by Alesis, and was imported the normal way. All channels
were mapped to Alesis instrument definitions, so I don't know why the keyboard won't select what the MIDI track is telling to select. Even if I manually set the keyboard to bank preset 1 patch 6, as soon as I play the MIDI file, it reverts to the GenMIdi bank.

I think I'm confused only because there's no data instructions in the event list that tell the keyboard which  bank to reference.
Any advice?
Thanks a million!
Corey

If it's not that the output channel needs to be assigned as referenced above, try using the QS 6.1 definition from the Alesis.ins file that comes bundled with SONAR. I'm not sure what "insert file" you're referring to, but I used the default Alesis.ins file to get a baseline definition for my QS8/QSR (since modified to reflect custom User patches), and it works fine.

Thank you all so much for responding. I did have the track channel assigned to MIDI channel 1, but it would still revert to GenMidi.

You might be correct in suggesting I use the bundled Alesis.ins file. I had used "Alesis6_1.ins" but that file was created about 5 years ago, so I'm hoping you nailed it.
I'll give it a try tonight!

    Again, thanks so much!
