May I ask a few simple questions? Why are you on this forum extolling the virtues of a competing program. Do you think it is right to advertise for a competitor here?

Do any of you care about how you look? Do you really think that the developer of the program you are advertising wants you to do this here?

I really don't care what answers you give I just want you to consider the questions.

besides linux??? BESIDES LINUX!?!?!? oh...ok, besides linux....

Linux?
OMG!

I'd rather input each note of Beethoven's 9th one at a time via cut-n-paste than use any of the current Linux DAW software.
Linux is one of those things that looks good in concept and theory but fails in practice.
The people writing the Linux DAW software have yet to realize it is to be used by musicians and not programmers.

I'd love to have a free operating system and DAW software and maybe in 10 years Linux will be there but for now you have to be a programmer to use the stuff.
FWIW Linux is great for a server and maybe a desktop for a techie but for average Joe, forget it and evidently that's what people are doing.

There is no might about it. However, as your unsure of whether there were any bug fixes, here are a small selection.

REAPER v1.803 - February 14 2007. -
# vis plugin config fixes

etc................

BTW - you must spend more time updating and reinstalling the software than actually working on tunes! I couldn't keep up with that particular release cycle. Nor would I want too.

Haha, funny, you extracted the bugfixes only. Anyway, I like the amount of bugfixes too. Wish some other had the same frequency, bugs enough to fix.

BTW. updating is effortless, download is only 2M for the whole program (!) tales about 1 minute, running the installes about 5 secs. As it should be.

One reason for the test migration of a small midi-project is to compare the sizes of the project-files as well. I noticed that all of the midi of my testproject only amounts to 17K, while the project file for Sonar is around 900K. I wonder whats's in the other 883K.

Ursa..

But as part of my daily routine i don't want to have to download on an internet PC, then transfer accross the patch to a non internet studio PC using media, Flash Ram or any other device, then to have to read what the update or bug fix is supposed to do and change my workflow.

PITA

I want to boot up and go, knowing my system.

If you enjoy risking being burned on a daily based in front of a Client then go for it....Wait until you have session musican rates to pay out of your own pocket ...no no ... you put downtime as a disclaimer...your studio will dissappear.

You still have not confirmed that you tried the CAL Script I pointed out for you: re: Glue and split.

I wish the Reaper folks would simply go away and use the thing they are raving about ... To me Reaper is UGLY, it requires much upkeep and is a potential nightmare to a studio.

I do not want to learn all the Hot keys I like buttons, i like menus , I like being reminded of functionality and functions that i may have not utilized in a little while.

Out of curio, if it's so great , why aren't you just using it, instead of annoying happy Sonar users

I don't see it as funny at all. I've learned nearly everything I know about computers, including DAW work, this way. For me, hands on learning has always been more effective, if not as swift, as reading a manual. (And I do RTFM when necessary.)

And by the way, right clicking in Reaper will show you what to do and is far more intuitive to me than a help file or Pdf documents. Also, the Reaper Wiki has some pretty good documentation and video demonstrations of features if fiddling around doesn't work for you.

I'm sorry, but this is just dumb.

Digidesign initially released protools HD as a cheaper, easier alternative to expensive tape-based analog recording systems. That's right folks, the widespread use of ProTools is because $20,000 was WAY CHEAPER compared to a high-end mixing desk and tape system.

Then products like Cubase, Logic and Sonar come along and provide a simple, affordable, recording studio in a box that even hobbyists can afford.

Cakewalk has been doing this digidesign for years, and digitdesign basically drove the tape makers out of business. Complain about computer audio and home recording driving commercial studios out of business left and right or about cheap digital destroying high-quality analog if you will, but to gripe that a $40/$200 DAW is BAD but a $400 one is NOT is ridiculous when 15 years ago a professional recording platform cost hundreds of thousands of dollars...

Whatever you think of Reaper, the fact that a couple of talented garage-band programmers have in a few short months created a product that is even competitive with the big DAWs, and which is in many respects superior can be nothing but GOOD for customers. It case you never took economics, the whole idea behind a free-market is to make products better, cheaper, and faster for consumers.

And are you serious about comparing inexpensive shareware to illegal dumping? Do you even know what that means? Have you ever used a free plugin, or flash player, or javascript thing? If two guys make a better product in their spare time than a massive conglomorate can make in years of R&D does that mean that the two guys should be FORCED to charge millions of dollars for their hobby, or should be barred from distributing a better, smaller product to protect the corporate interests? If that is your contention then you have a very unique view of antidumping regulations...

Finally, you may have been unaware of this, but for years, cakewalk has been producing very full-featured sequencer under the name of Music Creator that sells for like $30. Similar offerings are available from the other big developers, and freeware/shareware products such N-tracks and Magix have been around for years.

What has really made Reaper a hot topic in the audio world is not that it's a cheap sequencer (there are tons of those), it's that it is actually a legitimate contender/competitor to the big names, and that it implements a lot of features that many audio professionals have been clamoring for for years (real side-chain ring a bell?). It's smallness and cheapness and indie vibe are just extra fuel for a fire that wouldn't exist if this were not a heavyweight contender. And a small, cheap, heavyweight contender that introduces new functionality and better implementation will force ALL DAW makers to become that much more competitive, which is a good thing for consumers.

Cheers.

Be careful. That is how Cakewalk started out! The development of Reaper is eeringly similar to 12 tone systems early days!

I would not recommend Reaper for professional work, I agree. More for homestudios currently. All my Pc's are networked and have internet access, for years now.

For those curious, the project in Reaper, without effects and envelops around 1300K, so about 50% bigger than Sonar's. Of course Reaper uses Ascii for data, which would be bigger, but still I must admit that I didn't expect this. So, there you go .

Btw, I couldn't get the Roland Groovesynths to work in Reaper, which is a bummer, since I use them a lot.

After working for an hour or 2 in Reaper I must admit I was glad to be back in Sonar. It is more polished and easier to use in many respects. However, CW be warned, the engine under the hood and the speed in which functionality is added will make this a very competitive product before S7 comes out.

I think so much of it is what you know and are comfortable with. Just like when Cubase users switch to Sonar, they always love certain things but think other things are "wrong" compared with what they're used to with Cubase. While all these apps share the same basic principles and functionalities, each has their own approach and sensibilities.

For me, I used Acid before I came to Sonar, so Reaper's UI and approach felt very natural to me. But I still use and love Sonar, and have been using it for so long that it's like a friend...I open it up, and kinda go on auto-pilot...

Familiarity is cool. I guess that we all use things we are comfortable in. This being said, sometimes apps come alog that *make* you want to learn them to the point of being comfortable. Ableton Live is one such app for me. It's fun learning other stuff though, which is another reason I'll be giving Reaper a try. I'm sort of intregued. I totally identify with your "think other things are wrong" comment (this being said, all of Cubase just feels wrong for me)...

There is little better though than sitting in front of a system that you know inside out and know how to get things done fast in.

OK, I was promising myself not to chime in here, but I just can't help myself ...

I see a few people remarking about how small Reaper's session files are etc., and how small the program file itself is. Who cares? Does anyone here not have an over abundance of HDD space and a high-speed internet connection?

If not, it's 2007. Welcome. The term "kilobyte" practically went out with the floppy drive.

Ok, I'm done.

thanks
