I own /operate a small Shower Enclosure and Mirror company.

I opened up the company in 1993.

We basically build/fabricate all types of bath enclosures/mirrors/mirrored wardrobe doors.........Then we go into the field and install them.

Mostly new construction, single and multi family, some home owners, with the occasional hotel/motel.

I also sell some bath enclosures wholesale  to other small glass shops and finish type contractors..........

We don't do any other type of glass work,we have always focused on the mirror and shower enclosures.

Because of this we are a bit more competitive and knowledgeable than the avg retail glass dealer doing the same work.

This specialization has kept us busier than most in this "New" economic era.

I'm a commercial swimming pool specialist - I work for a small firm here in Phx that specializes in support/repair/consulting for hotels, apartments, resorts.  Code compliance, hydraulics issues, chemical automation, stuff like that.  I also teach a national certification course (CPO) for commercial pool operators - there's more science to it than most people think, it's not rocket surgery but it IS a specialized field of endeavor.

Some days I'm out in the field, getting cut/burned/shocked by 220v, coming home covered in sweat - other days I wear nice clothes and run the office, or do presentations, or teach that class.  I get to use my head, hands, and heart in my work - I can't complain.  Ain't getting rich, but I hold my own......

I was a Journeyman plumber in Colorado for 15 years. Did a bunch of residential work, but I really enjoyed commercial plumbing. It was a new challenge every day. I miss working with my torch. Sweating large diameter pipe (up to 3") was the best, but I liked brazing the bigger stuff whenever I got a chance. probably the coolest project I got to work on was the CU research facility at the Fitzimmons Campus. My partner and I ran advance layout. We mapped out 7 parallel systems in 22 riser groups in a 9 story building. When we got far enough ahead, we would drop back and run some of the pipe ourselves.
After that, I was an estimator for a plumbing company. it was a decent gig, but then the economy tanked, and construction came to a standstill.
I got laid off.
Now I'm a cable tech in Fort Worth. At age 52, I'm climbing telephone poles, hopping fences, crawling through attics, slogging through the mud, and having a generally good time. All of that in pursuit of bad connections that cause problems. I mostly do trouble shooting, but also do some installations.
The nice thing is I am constantly on the move. The estimator job was
more comfortable, but I hated being pinned to a desk.

I'm not getting rich, but I get to be a hero several times a day, and it pays the bills.

Teacher at a private school.  I mostly love it.  When I started here almost 5 years ago, I just taught what they told me to teach.  Now they want me to help design parts of the courses. That's fun too (I like being in charge), but some days I tell them it was easier when I just did what they told me to do and complained about it.  lol

It's really only slightly more than half-time, though, and quite a bit less pay than that, so I also clean houses, do yard work, teach piano lessons and help take care of elderly women now and then.

What do you actually do for vittles and such??
I've been in the copier/POS (Point of Sale) sales/service business since 89 (part time 84 ~ 89 during the summer). Sold and serviced copiers, faxes, printers, PC based and stand alone Point Of Sales systems, serviced PC's, installed multi function devices for printing and scanning on networks. Over the years I worked up to master tech status and was moving in to management. Unfortunately the economy had other plans for me. :)

I play poker for most of my income, and I have an interest in a business as a silent partner. I also flip a few houses a year. When things get slow, I tune bongos for spare change.

I envy you....I don't even know how to play poker. I understand the flippers are flopping by the dozens. Anyone hanging with that has to be savvy to the hilt.

I should be envied. Tuning bongos is not for the weak!

What I'm finding is nobody is hiring in the service industry here. Everyone is in panic mode and laying off or maintaining current staff but not adding. They just fired 14 more people yesterday on the service side of the company my wife works for. That's on top of the 20+ they've let go in the last 6 months. She's a process engineer and is part of a team that sets up water treatment plants all over the U.S..

Interesting thread.  There are so many talented people on the forum (beyond music).
Me, I'm a Buyer/Planner for a plastics manufacturing company in California.  Was formerly in the military electronics field doing the same thing (buyer/planner) and before that, working in pharmaceuticals (blood/plasma derivatives).  I got into buying/planning because of a friends recommendation 10 years ago.  Basically, I tell people what to do and when without having any of the power to do anything to them if they don't.   Something you have to get used to for sure.

Okay, I'll bite too!

Now? Semi-retired and teach English here in sunny Deutschland, where I recently re-married, (sucker!) and now create rehearsal tracks for my wife, a professional operatic singer (mezzo).

Used to do? After a long career in mainframe computing (started in '66), programming real-time systems in assembler language, I became a software support engineer for ICL (now Fujitsu) and went on, over 20  years, to become a Principal Consultant in data and telecom protocols. Redundancy in 1993 led to self-employment and selling my services back to ICL at twice the price! ;-) Serves 'em right! Bean counters ... p'tah!!

Then went into the training business, still self-employed, and wrote and delivered courses for the likes of British Telecom, then into Satcomms where I did the same with the new data satcoms technology. The satellite links journalists use when reporting from remote locations. Travelled the world twice in two years delivering the courses before burning out, hardly surprising!

Now I is just another user of Sonar (7 PE).
