I didn't love the logo when I started reading this thread, but I must admit it has grown on me.

BTW -- I threw the color version into Paint Shop Pro, and did a simple conversion to "greyscale." It works fine -- if I could figure out how to insert an image, I'd show you what I mean.

Logo looks okay to me, although I do agree with the Rodar6 in that it is "a bit karaoke" and combined with the word "pup" it could be seen as a kiddies karaoke.

Also I don't think that Mike's conversion to grayscale is right. IMO it should be coverted so that what is grey on your original logo becomes black, and what is yellow on your logo becomes mid to light grey - this will give the logo a lot more punch and definition, and you won't have to worry so much about the quality of the newspapers printing!!

Also you sound like you've tried replacing with the yellow with a few other primary colours, but there is a whole range of colours out there other than just bright yellow, bright blue or bright red!!!

The point you guys are missing is that a newspaper layout laborer is going to do just what I did... A desaturate process. They are not going to take the time to grayscale index.

It's the logo owners responsibility to provide a logo that looks good in grayscale. Which of course can be done. But realize that the ultra nice screened "grays" that look nice on your 1200ppm laser printer will look ugly and blocky in a newspaper. It will look even worse on a T-Shirt.

All I'm saying is prepare your logo with the "excellence in black and white design" mentality and then decorate it with color when the medium permits.

best,
mike

The b&w version of the logo is bad.... looks like a misprint. I agree with most folks that it needs more contrast. Also Pupco sounds like a pet business.

Here's your real problem though: if you search the web on Pupco, a lot of businesses come up with that name and that name might be the registered trademark of one of them, which means you may not be able to use it. My wife used to be in the trademark business and I've learned that when anyone comes up with a name for a business or product, the first thing you should do is have a trademark search done on it.

No doubt. But liike you say:

It's the logo owners responsibility to provide a logo that looks good in grayscale. Which of course can be done.

Yes, it can be done. In Paint Shop Pro, you select "grayscale" from the menu, and you're done (unless you want to dig in and tweak tweak tweak, to get it "perfect").

All I'm saying is prepare your logo with the "excellence in black and white design" mentality and then decorate it with color when the medium permits.

I could not agree more. I do software documentation for a living, and I always follow that principle.

I was wondering, what is the point of the curved yellow lines on the outside leading down? It looks like a wishbone. Every design element should be there for a reason; what was the reason for those? And those zig-zags to the side of the mic that the curved lines lead down from - is that intended to be a waveform? If so, I suggest you make it straight, not leaning, so the "general public" has a fighting chance of recognizing it. Just a thought.

OK, dwire, somebody 'splained me how to get a picture in here -- this is the "grayscale" logo, as produced by Paint Shop Pro:

I like it, very creative. Maybe take the dark grey (outlines and lettering) up a shade, more towards black a bit (darker)? That may help with the conversion to B&W and make the logo bolder. Just a thought. Looks cool.

With the font and colors, it seems to have a retro 70's vibe.

That's pimp Steve. It looks clubby....cool!

Dwire,

I don't understand why you came here asking for opinions that you will not take into consideration. You basically had you mind made up about that logo before coming here and probably just wanted to hear praises from others...no? The logo needs better colors and the name sounds funny. Pup Company???. Just my opinion, which is what you came here for.

Take care!

If I called myself McDonald's Studio do you think I would get a cease and desist letter from McDonald's restaurant? NO WAY! So I doubt seriously my little blip on the map will get any attention for trademark infringement.

You bet your a$$ you would be sued in a New York minute. McDonald's has successfully sued anyone who dared use the "Mc" name on a business or product. Better do your homework before making such statements. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonald's_legal_cases and http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_go1494/is_200406/ai_n6423900.

Go ahead and use it. Maybe no one will complain. If they do and they own the trademark, you'll have to change your company name and all your materials and possibly pay damages.

My favorite post was by an individual that, mind you I never mentioned anything about waveforms anywhere, but he said that the waveforms looked as if they were portraying something else tricky or something to that effect and I think the mention of puppy ears was added in there somewhere. The point he missed is that accidentally, he COMPLETELY IDENTIFIED WITH WHAT THOSE LINES WERE WITHOUT ME SAYING! he called them waveform lines; I might have thought of them as sound pressure lines or something, but he nailed it, and then criticized it. Kind of funny.

Uhh...I obviously didn't miss the point and I didn't really criticize the waveform - I just pointed out that, when you bend waveform lines into a shape that people aren't used to seeing for no apparent reason, it can be distracting and/or confusing. Then I offered a suggestion to straighten them out. But, as Jose pointed out and everybody else can see quite clearly, you have been very defensive to any suggestions and/or criticism that you asked for and people have offered, even to the point of making smartass replies about other people's avatars. And you obviously have no intentions of changing it, so why are you even asking us to waste our time with it?

You can also create your own b&w version for use in newspapers and such that would have enough contrast, and keep your colors, if you want them, for the color version. The b&w version, as an example, might have solid black outlines around PUPCO, and 20 or 30 percent black shade where the yellow is.

I like the design OK, but I wonder what PUPCO means. Nothing in the logo explains that.

Having spent way too much time over the years researching logos... this is just awful, for all the reasons that have already been stated. Secondly -- and I'm sorry to contribute to the madness -- this is not the proper forum for this subject matter.

By the way, I did a search at http://www.uspto.gov/# and it didn't find Pupco as a registered trademark. That's not an exhaustive search, but a good indicator.
