OT - What was your very first computer?

What was the very first computer you or your family owned? Post a link!

The very first computer I layed my hands on was a Microbee. Was back in 1986 I think. My Dad purchased it before moving on to Amiga's.. I was around 6 years old.

I dont really remember much about it. Apart from it ran from a tape drive, and I used to play games like Snake, Asteroids and this cool game sort of like Helicopter.

The Microbee Computer

Yeah Ive heard the Atari MIDI was/is the best..

Relating to that... After the old man got rid of the Microbee, he moved on to Amiga's.
    Amiga 500, 1500, 2000..

I still think that Amiga were far in front of any other OS/Computer at that time with both OS and graphics!!
    The Amiga graphics kicked ass..

Yeah, I wanted the Atari ST bad because of the built-in MIDI ports. I still have it and it still works too!

And of course, the awesome Dr.T's KCS Sequencing software...

    Commodore 64

I actually worked for about 9 months at a software startup that targeted C64, Vic 20's, TRS 80, Atari and the Texas Instruments low end consumer computers

We used C64's as our development machines

Mine was the MAC SE from 1987

This had a 20 MB hard drive and I thought I was the man. Actually it was the first laptop, because it had a carry handle behind it and I used to carry it back and forth to college to write my papers in the library. The OS was a systems floppy disk that I had to load in order to get the sucker to boot up. LOL

    ...Ahhh, those were the days!!!

TRS80, Thanks Plainfaced you have just made me feel old.
Man if you could have all the young whipper snappers here have to go back and learn how to use one of those first computers, I bet they wouldn't complain about Software now. I remember in college we had to input the data by punch cards, and wait for it to compile hours later and hope you didn't have a runtime error and have to start all over.

First was a BBC Model B.

I worked for CPU Ltd which owned and ran Acorn Computers and did some design revison work on the main board for this machine.

Then to an Amiga 500, with Dr. T's KCS Sequencing software.

Anyone remember the Timex/Sinclair Z80? I had one of those (and still do, actually, but it doesn't work anymore).

    http://oldcomputers.net/zx80.html

I also had/have a Vic-20 which still works last time we plugged it in and played Cosmic Crunchers! I spent hours and hours programming that thing and saving to cassette tape!

    http://www.oldcomputers.net/vic20.html

then later came the TRS-80 with NO HARD DRIVE. I bought an upgrade later to add a 20M Hard drive that was on an ISA CARD!

The nice thing about the Motorolla 6502 (C64, Apple IIe, etc.) was that you could literally write out an entire assembly language program on paper and have it be close to 100% correct the first time... (assuming you knew what you were doing, of course...)

I started with the C64, until I spliced a 5-pin DIN cable with a stereo RCA cable and tried to connect the composite output to my parent's VCR... poof! (Yes, I wired the 5-pin connectors backwards... hard lesson #1 in reading a schematic). It would have cost more to fix the thing than to buy a new one, so I saved my pennies over the summer and bought an Amiga 500 with 512K expansion... dual floppy heaven!

If you guys are into this sort of "history lesson" check out the documentary "Triumph of the Nerds". The series is dated, as the Internet was really just taking off in 1996, but it's really interesting.

On the 6502... My first real programming job was an embedded system that was controlling an early laser scanning system. We used the 6502 only because the boss's son was used to programming with it on his Apple II.

I didn't get a computer until about '89 or '90, an IBM. Originally I had to work with DOS, but after an upgrade to a 20meg HD and several more KB of Ram, I was able to run Windows on that baby. Total cost, about $4500.

To think of how proud I was that it blew away every computer of every one I knew...19 years later....wow!
