Oh Holy Night - 3 Part Vocal Harmony w/Piano {{REMIXED}}

Been a long time since I posted anything so I figured I'd do a new Christmas song and throw out there. This is the first one I've sung. All the other ones have been instrumentals.

It's just the first verse, but nobody knows the other two verses anyway so you won't really miss them. :)

Project Specs:

Sonar X1c x64
44.1kHz/32bit
Blue Bluebird Mic
ART MPA Pro II Tube Mic Preamp.
Cakewalk True Piano
Sonitus Compressor (Very little usage.)
Sonitus EQ (Very little usage.)
Sonitus Reverb
VX-64 Vocal Strip (De-Esser)
Boost 11 Limiter
V-Vocal in a couple of spots.
6 Vocal Tracks
1 Piano Track

I didn't do any slip editing on this, I just kept redoing the parts until I got the timing right. Sonar says I got up to 105 takes. I didn't quantize the piano part. It's one take while I was singing the main line, so it's got some Wabi Sabi. This is the third version I recorded. I manually went in and took out the sibilance on the other two, but by the third project I couldn't take it anymore and used the Vocal Strip.

It's quite different than anything else I've ever done. Hope everyone enjoys and Merry Christmas.

Oh Holy Night REMIXED & REMASTERED

UPDATE: I wasn't happy with how the de-esser sounded and I fixed some pitch problems. This version is much better IMO. The VX-64 De-Esser just kills the high end across the board so I removed it and did it manually with envelopes on all 6 tracks.

I love some of the vocal harmonies - this is a very tender version. Wonderfully done.

What a pleasantly suprising sound.  Not at all what my (obviously incorrect) preconceived expectations were from some grumpy guy from Jersey.  Going onto my Ipod, where do I send the buck?

Good job Bub, love those vocals and harmonies. Production sounds like a bit of distortion on the vocals but still very enjoyable.

Thanks everyone. Glad you all liked it.

@ohgrant: I like that driven sound, especially on vocals, but it really punches on this one, especially when listening to it on a laptop. I was driving the tube on my mic pre pretty hard and it's recorded that way, so no going back now. :)

There's only 3 parts, main, mid harmony, and high harmony, but I double tracked each one, so there's actually 6 vocal parts your hearing. I had a bass harmony line but it just didn't fit right so I muted it.

    Thanks everyone.

    Hey Bud,
That's what I'm talking about. Sometimes simplicity in a mix says a lot more then 32 tracks of instruments.  GREAT job on your vocals/harmonies. Mix gave me a warm classic vibe.  Kinda like when Bing Crosby sang Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth with Bowie. KUDOS!

Oh holy what? :) This is great Bub! I love your voice...always have! I'd love to hear you orchestrate some strings etc in this...but it's awesome just the way it is. You know, that drive thing Grant mentioned...I've never been a fan of it either...but I've been warming up to it on my own stuff as well. I thought you used it quite well in this. It's not to the point of distortion on my end...but it just has a bit of drive push which I think worked really great on this.

Really well done man...did I mention I love your voice? :) In a non-gay way of course. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing this! It makes me want to try my hand at one of those TSO songs...but it would probably take me until next Christmas to have it ready! Hahaha!

    Hey, Bub,

Really nice job on this, great harmony work, and it sounds fantastic over the solitude of the single piano playing!

Great voice/harmonies and arrangement. I didn't hear the earlier version but this mix sounds fine to me.

    Very nice.

I've learned over time that the best way to fix a vocal line, is just sing it until you get it right.  I sing some lines a bunch of times before I get it right.... of course by then you can sing it pretty well.

    Again.. well done.

really nice Bub!  I love the sound you have gotten on your vocals and the stereo separation on the harmonies!

there are still some sibilance issues here and there, but I think it gives the song character.

I have to critique a little, tho.   the piano, tho, I'm not fond of the piano sound.  I think a better piano sound could be found.

there are a few places when the vox drop out that I can hear some noise - maybe mic noise or background noise while you were recording?  you can probably gate the vox - or a better way would be to use envelopes and drop the volume down to -inf during the times you're not singing.

just my 2cents.  loved this version!

Kind of an Elvis vibe here. One of my favorites, if not the favorite Christmas tune. I was singing it to a young lady just last weekend? Well the beginning of the chorus anyway?

Thanks again to all who keep listening and your kind words. :)

@Robby ... in your dreams pal. In your dreams! (Referring to you singing this last weekend.)

@Beagle: Sibilance! Sibilance!! Grr. I struggle with it so. :) I could get it out even more, but when I do, it's apparent that the volume is dipping so I took it out the best I could without it being obvious there was something going on if that makes any kind of sense. :) I tried Karyn's suggestion about the multi-band compressor but I was not very successful. Surprisingly, the 64 Mulit-Band Comp worked a thousand times better than the Sonitus Multi-Band Comp. I didn't have to touch anything other than the threshold. It worked right out of the chute.

True Piano that comes with X1 Producer sounds really bad if you try to EQ it too much. I think that's the noise you were hearing because I manually went in and removed every bit of silence between singing parts. I have dozens of clips in this. I always do that on vocals because V-vocal seems to work better on smaller clips and I find it easier to work with envelopes to fix volume and sibilance on small clips. The other thing you might be hearing is the drive on the mic pre amp. I really had the tube warmed up on this one.

If I didn't take out the bottom on the True Piano, it was too boomy sounding and overpowering, even at a lower volume. Unfortunately, it's all I have. I don't care for the ones in Dim Pro or TTS1 and it's so rare that I do a piece with the piano this prominent that I can't justify purchasing a better quality one. I should try the piano patch on my Korg X5. It is excellent.

Thank you for the critique! :) It was getting expensive paying everyone off to say all that nice stuff. ;)
