I was just looking at Waves Tune and its $400 pricing at JRR, I couldn't help but notice that L2 was listed right next to it at $250. I couldn't help but think; "What a rip off for a limiter"... and now I see that while you can actually pay $250 for it you can also actually pay less than $29.00. That's how to keep customers coming back. :-S It makes me wonder what Waves Tune actually costs.

JRRShop sent me an email that has the L1 listed for $29 and the Ultrapitch for $39.

Wasn't LI one of the very first plugins ever to be released? I've had the 15 years or so, tried them all & this still gets used as my default track limiter. Light on resources too. My templates use 30 instances, no problem. Unless I'm really squashing a track I don't need to use anything else.

According to wikipedia, their first product was a parametric equalizer in 1992. That's ancient history in this business! It was, in fact, the very first audio plugin (for Sound Tools, predecessor to ProTools). What's even more amazing is that they're still selling it.

And what's even more amazing than that is that it still works great! I use Q10 all the time ... I haven't found anything that I like better for surgical cuts at particular frequencies. So clean and transparent, with no noticeable CPU hit. I'm not wild about most of Waves' other EQ plugs, which I think have been bettered by the competition, but this oldie-but-goodie has aged well in my book. Cheers, Eddie

Love L1 too. Q10 I tend to use on things like huge heavy metal guitars, where I do a lot of EQ'ing. I never use all 10 bands but I find it handy to have as many bands as I need.

No dongle? A dongle would be a deal breaker for me. I have been dongle-less ever since I started using computers for audio and would like to stay that way.

Waves no longer require a dongle as of Version 9 Sidroe....
They have a CLOUD based authorization scheme...
The nice things about it is...you can authorize to either the computer or a USB Drive, and, if you want, send you licenses to the cloud when you want to redo or replace your hard drive and then bring them back when your done...

No dongle anymore, but the new authorization scheme is even more convoluted and fragile than an iLok key. The most reliable option is to create your own dongle, placing the license on a thumb drive of your own. Of course, then you're right back in dongle-land, and if you lose or break the USB device you'll have to re-authorize. The alternative is a locally-stored license, which alleviates the need for a hardware dongle. However, I do it that way and on three separate occasions my Waves plugins have suddenly all failed to work, requiring re-authorization. I could not get advice from the company because I didn't buy the WUP - not even an email query. Luckily, their published threat to only allow two re-authorizations per year was not enforced and I was able to get them working again. But I've not bought any more Waves products since.

Wonder if you build up re-authorizations if you've never used one?? So far I never have and I've been with them for a good many years. And while I've never had anything more than frustration using iLok...I much prefer WAVES cloud system and don't find it fragile in the least. At least, not yet.

When I upgraded to a new rig recently the Waves license thing was pretty straight forward, except that no matter what I did I couldn't get my licenses for One Knob Louder and Renaissance Bass (both freebies) back. Which frustrated me for about a minute before I realized that I never used them for anything.

I prefer Renn over Maxx but when I need a small amount of bass enhancement on a mix / mastering I'll use LoAir. You have to be very careful with that puppy but when dialed in it works..

Sharke, in the Waves On Line Licenser there is a "Recover My Licenses" Feature...did you try that? (your WUP has to be up to date before you can recover)

So far, Waves has been great for me. I had an issue with my plugs not showing in X3. It was all my fault because I was trying to do stupid things at the time. Waves sent me a program that allowed them to take over my DAW and fix everything for me. Fast and efficient. As for WUP, well, most of my Waves stuff is old and will never be updated (L1 for instance). The J37 is my only new Waves product and the only one that I'll worry about. Try the J37 on acoustic guitar using its delay. Very cool.

I was very tempted, but I fought off this bit of GAS. I am sure that I am passing on some very capable quality plugs. The WUP deal has always just been a real burr in my saddle. I don't want to go down that road. I've got Limiter #6 and Concrete that I use most of the time. Is there another out their that I should be tucking away my nickels and saving up for that is on line with L1 or even better. This is a hobby, so I don't want to go nuts on one. Maybe Melda.....

Honestly, Limiter 6 is about as good as they come -- no need to search for something better unless you're seriously into mastering. Concrete is pretty good for a track limiter, as are freebies like LoudMax. L1 is a classic, but not essential these days, IMHO. Cheers, Eddie
