Open letter to the guys.
Well well now. It's obvious a few feathers have been ruffled. Maybe in a day or so it will sink in that Steve was right. Or not. I'm hoping for the former. I don't believe anyone has said they wanted a forum that was serious all the time. Here is my take on this. Myself, and others who have contacted me thru PM and email over the last few months feel that this place turned into the Bapu show. Checking into the forum here on a daily basis it seemed as though every other thread was started by Ed. It was either about post count, or a mashup of someone else's thread. It got to where I didn't even want to check out threads, because quite a few were steered off topic into the usual becan, Am, etc. I and others just stopped posting because of it. Ed, I like you and most of your humor. The images you put into threads, either OT or on are usually funny to me. You and I have had a few PM's regarding helping out fellow forum members who needed it. I highly respect you for that as a man of integrity. You are a musicians musician. That carries alot of weight with me. I guess I'm just asking for you to understand that to some of us, it seems there isn't alot of breathing room in here sometimes. Alot of folks have been beating around the bush about it for the last day or so, and you obviously picked up on it and so has Reece. I get that it upset you both. How you react to this is a concern to me, but I'm done being vague and obvious at the same time. It's occured to me now, that I was trying to be tactful in other threads, and I should have just been this honest from the start. I apologize for the delay. This might cause a turd storm, but I hope at least you guys can appreciate this as an honest message. I've sat here a good 5 minutes staring at this message wondering whether to post it or not. It's honest. Randy

A PM would have sufficed. You guys didn't have to do what you did to Bapu. Well, maybe I should ask first ... Did anyone PM Bapu and say, "Hey man, can you cut back a little, we can't get a post in edgewise?"

Also, for the record. I have not posted one mashup title, a Ya, Ja or Becan post in the last two days. And as I've stated elsewhere (in two separate threads here in the CH) I intend to make every effort to stop that behavior which was constructively given as example of degrading the place. With regard to OT posts in others threads it seems that now it comes to light that even it has gone too far (in some people's minds) too. So the "new rule" I'll make every effort to uphold is that I'll make no OT comments in anybody's threads. Please feel free to call me on it (in public or PM) if you see it. As my good friend Jonbouy says; I can't say fairer than that*. Yes, that's one of his tired old "punch lines" but I mean it in all sincerity.

I said above high hold you in high regard. I hoped you would post something like this. My hope is that anyone who sees this will understand that the spinoffs that are going around right now are going to lead to more trouble than has already started in those threads. I hope they end right now and this stuff falls off the page and we can get to a different place that's better than what we had. If I read Ed's post correctly, that's what he wants too. Randy

Bapu, you got slammed here this week. You got slammed bad. I wouldn't cater to a single one of the people who claim to hold you in high regard and say they are your friend. A PM would have been sufficient. You people didn't need to spend two days of not so vague innuendo's and indirect accusations. You're nothing but a bunch of spineless two faced backstabbers in my opinion. Bapu, for your sake, I'll remove this post if you want me to, but I'll always feel this way and this place will NEVER be the same. What happened here was wrong, plain and simple. Dead ****ing wrong. This is the last thing I'll say about it.

This is the last thing I'll say about it. Bub, there is no need to polarize this to such an extent. Bapu has known since Willy used to wind his post count back to 10k and tell him to 'cool it with the posting' that he's been pushing the envelope. Speaking from my point of view I expect Bapu knows that he is as well-loved as he ever has been certainly from this quarter. People are very fond of Bapu and it now transpires that his friends here are saying enough is enough with the post count thing. I'd rather my freinds told me the truth about me that perhaps would piss me off in the first instance than eventually abandon me because it all got too much and didn't feel they could say anything for fear of hurting my feelings. That's all that's required here all people are saying is that the excess has got old and cool it a little, nobody is saying you are a complete pain get out of town. Have a look at the consideration that Randy spoke of before hitting the 'post' button. I know enough of Randy to know he ain't lying about that. Speaking for myself I'm certainly not picking on Bapu nor stabbing him in the back and what I feel about him is certainly not going to change because of what is happening here just now, I'm also pretty confident that his views of people here are not going to change radically either. Of course none of this applies to my 17+k post count because everything I say is either sensible or important. (or is it?)

One of the worst nights I had we were playing to a packed house, very large crowd and we were on...having one of those nights that just everything was right. We were doing a cover of Sultans Of Swing and we did it good- I picked Knofler note for note from start to finish... but not that night. The lead came around and I went blank. Totally lost-didn't even know what key we were in to just fake it...horrible...just horrible...there was nothing that could un-do the damage. I've never forgot that and probably never will. I can't believe I have that same sick feeling and that this forum has given it to me these last few days. Just blank. Man I'll tell you all...I have no idea what kind of **** tune it is that's being played here and I'm thinking the smartest thing I could do is find a different group to play with. I just noticed that Beagle is so upset he's resorted to casting the news. May as well hit the weather too Reece.

I think Bapu got slammed too. I am not a regular participant here but I have certainly read my fair share of posts and contributed when I wanted. There have been other issues, other posters, other people feeling slammed in this forum too. I don't think the constant fluff is interesting but I will say that there are plenty of other posts that include the CH members that are helpful and sincere. I have worked with Bapu on several songs now and he has been professional and very supportive all along the way. I will also speak to those that think they know a better way of directing free speech. Who among you really wants to take on that role? It would be one thing for Cake to step in (which they did to address the tension between forum members) but they did not try to limit anyone's words, topics or general craziness. They only want all of us to respect each other and our different points of view. I think it really wrong to voice an opinion to the world instead of approaching the individual when it involves personal issues. There are far too many really important daily problems in this world to take care of these days instead of worrying about the silliness going on in CH don't you think? How does any of this help anyone? Who then will be next to say they don't like that one? Who next will say that's it, I'm leaving or that someone doesn't get their point of view so they trump off? What about the few that got absolutely annihilated over the past week or so? How do they feel? Are those that posted against them feeling good right now? It seems there are too many chaperons at the party. A few words may be all that is necessary and I think too many have already been said. Rimshot

That happened to me one night. We would close out set 3 with Hotel California. The keyboard player hit a sour note right at the break going in to the lead and we looked at each other and made eye contact and my mind went blank. I seem to remember instinctively going in to some kind of Johnny B. Goode type lead and tried to save it, but it was too late.

It's the law of entropy. If you add a spoonful of sewage to a barrel full of wine, you get sewage. If you add a spoonful of wine to a barrel full of sewage, you get sewage. Was the silliness getting a little too much? Maybe. But it wasn't until one person came and dropped a turd in the wine followed by another persons complete meltdown (very much provoked by the same person who started the poisoning) that this place became sour. If this is going to become just another site of the same drivel as so many others out there than so be it. I've got more important things to worry about like figuring out if I'll have a place to live once my ex-business partner has his house foreclosed and where I can find a job that doesn't say I'm over qualified for or don't have enough "recent" experience. I'm sure I'm just being selfish, but there are soooo many other websites out there where you can go and discuss anything to do with music (and I'm a member of a few - with well over 40,000 posts among them), but this used to be the one place that took my mind off of the crap I have to deal with right now. That said, this isn't about me. I've just never seen a couple of nice, caring guys get so complete slammed like that before. Someone who doesn't even understand the concept of Disneyland has stopped by and somehow managed to kick both Mickey and Goofy in the nuts.

OK just as a reminder of the TOS. Spam Spamming the Cakewalk forum with senseless, inane, or empty messages to increase your post count, or simply to aggravate, will not be allowed. This includes such things as chain letters and two-word "I agree" or "me too" responses. Continually posting the same topic on a particular board, and posting the same question across several forums is also considered spamming, and is a violation of this TOS. Not speaking for anyone else I've been in contravention of this many times. I agreed to be bound by those terms when I joined. So did everyone else. In the light of some of the valid criticism of this place that's recently come to light I am undertaking to conform to those terms far more diligently. Anyone care to join me? Bapu hasn't been 'slammed' he's got off lightly as have many of us. HTH

Well, if he did get "slammed", which I think is just a bit hyperbolic, he took it with style, grace and the intestinal fortitude and good humor that is and has always been his hallmark. Any of us can (and probably should) be chided regularly for our goofy, exclusionary, inside joke behaviour here...but then that's what "here" is for. It is NOT upstairs. It's a refuge. A meeting place. A place to just be yourself and not have to worry how you might or might not come off. I'm not too worried about ol Bapsi. He's a goodun. Always will be. We'll find our equilibrium again and get all snuggly comfy. You just wait and see. And I bet Bapsi will still be the catalyst of all that. He can't help it. He was born unfunny. It's a gift.

Well, I guess Bapsi should be mighty proud. He's got his own parodist. He seems an overly harsh critic though. He's so strict!

craigb craigb ...Was the silliness getting a little too much? Maybe. But it wasn't until one person came and dropped a turd in the wine followed by another persons complete meltdown (very much provoked by the same person who started the poisoning) that this place became sour. ... Just need to correct myself and "get the record straight". THIS was the original turd. The person who kept goading Ben after everyone else finally got him to settle down a bit was simply a similarily named person. Looks like most of the responders except Shad have changed their tunes. Nope speaking for myself I didn't change my tune on the judgement of that post, it was calculated and as inflammatory as a petrol bomb. What I did agree with was the same poster went on and levelled the same criticism upstairs without the intent to rile the group and both Strummy and myself have stuck our hands up as being guilty as charged since he did that. Some people have made it clear that the saturation posting is spoiling their enjoyment, I'm taking that on-board but I don't envisage becoming a stuffed shirt in the process, I can see room for movement without going from one extreme to the other. That is why I'm not 'slammin' Bapu but rather using the self-noted reminder of the section of the TOS I re-iterated here to base my further participation on. All I have to take care of is my part in the percieved problem I have no bearing on what anyone else decides to do or not do. It's not the 'slamming' of a particular personality that is disconcerting me at the moment it is the amount of finger pointing when all that needs doing is addressing ones own conduct in line with their consciences. I've heard some are having problems with the conduct here and I'm taking note. Simples. If that sounds like a back-stabbing or some kind of duplicity then that is a choice for you to make.
