Wow, seriously Randy?!  Basically, anyone using EWQL products are noobs, cause we don't know better.

Lol--Hi, Jose - I was just agreeing with Jake's comments, and perhaps with a bit too much enthusiasm.

The EW orchestral libraries are obviously wonderful sounding, as evidenced in these Shootout entries, with yours way up there on the list of best sounding examples.  I wasn't intending on offending users of EW, I was simply agreeing with Jake, Bitflipper and others both here at Sonar and other bulletin boards who get frustrated with not having full control over their reverb.  But those are outstanding instruments in EW, without question.

Randy,

It wasn't the fact that you (and others) prefer dry libraries that bothered me, but your comment on how experienced an orchestrator is based on that.  I thought that the orchestral shootout made this very clear given how virtually any library (i.e. TTS-1) can be made to sound good.  Wether one prefers a wet or a dry library is simply a matter of taste, not experience AFAIK.  People make great recordings with either/both kinds of library.

OK, Jose - I was just sharing my opinion and observations, no intention to ruffle your feathers.

You mis-phrased what I said though.  I didn't say how experienced an orchestrator is can be based on his/her preference of dry or wet samples.  I was just relaying what I've seen people say, that some of them can feel backed into a corner when they realize they have one of the EW libraries which isn't as flexible with reverb as they'd hoped.  But obviously plenty of good musicians/composers have no problem with wet samples.

You know I admire the work you do very much.  You clearly know what you're doing.

Randy,

You probably didn't mean any harm by it, but that's how I interpreted what you wrote.  If I'm the one who's out of line, then I apologize.

Please carry on.  Nothing to see here :-)

Hi, Jose - I sometimes can be a bit overly-exuberant in my text, and I accidentally offend people.  I always try to avoid situations like that, but I know my colorful posts can sometimes miss their mark.  You, my friend, haven't been out of line at all.

Carry on!

This thread has probably lived out its shelf life on the Forum, but I know that we still haven't actually done more than scratch the surface of potential topics to be mined from this thing we all did together.

In retrospect, I'd say it's been an interesting and sometimes simply entertaining thread.  But I know there are more On Topic posts that could be put up in response to the tremendous amount of info and work that those 72 Trek entries represent.

Any takers on more conversation?

I still think it would be awesome to try something similar to this, but with a slightly less..... well... er.. loud track. :p

I really would be interested to see how various libraries handle winds, and strings.  Not just a bunch of brass, with so much bass it muddies everything.

Me three!  Maybe somebody at some point will like to organize another orchestral comparison event, featuring something more classical which can show off, in turn, each of the sections of the orchestra.

I might be able to get a midi file from an actual Williams score if anyone would be interested in running it.

I wouldnt mind getting the music to the below soundtrack and seeing how closely anyone could get these beautiful violin lines.

Schindler's List (starting about 17 seconds in)

Could be something classic like Ravel or Stravinsky. One minute and feature all the sections is kind of a stretch.

Ravel's Bolero would be a good one, as it features every section in the orchestra. But I sure wouldn't have the patience to judge 72 entries that were each 15 minutes long!

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Pcartwright put an interesting new post on the old Shootout thread - Pasting it in here on the more current thread to make sure interested parties would see it:

"I realize that the time to submit an entry for the competition is long over and that voting ended about three weeks ago, but can I still contribute to the shootout?  I have a file that I think sound alright, and I'd love to get some feedback and discuss techniques if anyone is interested."
