Thank you, Shawn, for taking the time to listen to this again.  PG has been one of the major influences in my musical evolution, though I'm sure it's accidental if you hear him in my voice.  I use Chrome, too, so I appreciate your comment.

It sounds like mid range distortion. It's hard to tell as my ears aren't that good yet. I think it's the voice and guitars fighting for space in the mid range.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Robert, I'm kinda at a loss here, but it's not just you.  Some have pointed out the difference in browsers.  I use Chrome, and I don't get the distortion at this end.  But, thanks for your time and vigilance.  These are the things that matter in the end.

Great song, great sentiment, and great video. I like the mix but I get some distortion on the vocals when playing it back on my laptop.

Love it.

Cheers,
Terry.

If you backed off on the volume about 6 dB this would probably sound very good.

Hello everyone,

Been lurking around the forums and using Cakewalk products since the pro audio 7 days or before and thought
it's about time to contribute something.
I think you got a great song. I am hearing the distortion too but it is hard to tell if its the vocal distorting or if that's the way you sound. It may be that it's a little bit over compressed in the midrange. I would like to hear just a touch more of the low frequency stuff in the mix but that may be just me. I do not have subs ,just Yamaha NS10Ms.
Overall I think it sounds pretty darn good though!

Terry, Jonas, and Monty, I'm getting a consensus on the distortion, now.  I'm going to back off the volume by 6db or so, and I believe this should take care of the problem.  I'll repost after I deal with this.  Thank you all so much for your time and patience.

COOL TUNE, good ideas with the vid as well......
sounds like this tune could have been influenced by a combo of king crimson and captain beyond

mix items:
make the congas brighter....
vox are a slight bit muddy...
and possibly a bit too aggressive with the compression settings on the vox, too fast of an attack?

production items:
at the end of the song: i like the double stop ending, but i'd really like to hear that noise that's in the background, leading up to the end, continue past the music.....
or, some kind of ambient sound that lingers for about 6 seconds past the last downbeat.
the song feels like it wants to continue (the round robin thing) and that bit of added noise would allow the brain to continue it even as it has already stopped.

nice project!

Agreed. Much better. I'd be curious what would happen if you created a narrow dip at around 2450mhz on the different sounds. It may depend on the key though. It may be that my setup here in my mixing area tells me to do that. I don't think so though. I don't have the greatest mixing area but my curve on ARC2 isn't that different from the correction.

Whoa..Shawn.  Where'd you get that VU meter?  Awesome!

Lynn, I loved the song and the video.  Even tho I'm rather frustrated myself with the state of our planet.  I also agree the bongo is a nice touch.  In addition, I think the low end gets lost in the tiny speakers on most people's computers upon playback...in my experience.

Lastly, thanks for sharing the Video Blocks source for copyright-free footage.  I've used archive.org the same way, and have even shared a few things I've actually seen used tastefully.  Maybe there's hope for the world, after all....

Lynn,

This mix is really good.  Maybe a little more low-end needed but overall very well balanced and well done.   I like your use of percussion throughout, it really drives the song well.

The video was good too.  Are those stock video library shots?   You did a nice job telling the story with them.

Re: Our Planet - redux 2014/04/08 13:19:59 (permalink)
Robert, thanks for listening again and reporting.  Your idea of a slight dip in the mid range is interesting.  That's one I'll file away for trying as I finalize this mix.

Erin, thanks for listening and your input.  You pointed out an interesting dilemma for mix engineers, today.  Trying to get low end audible on today's small laptop speakers is quite a challenge.  As soon as I get it audible on my tablet's speakers, it gets boomy on a high end system with subs.  The truth is;  I'm PO'd that people are willing to listen on these toy speakers in the first place.  But I recognize reality - that may be all that's available for some.  I try to use ear buds to find that delicate balance.

Kenny, I appreciate your time and response.  Congratulations to you for your fine video work, lately.

Mark, thanks for your kind words.  I may yet be able to squeeze a few db's for the low end in my final version.  Much of the video came from Video Blocks, archive.org, and Youtube which has a wealth of royalty-free videos.

I really liked it Lynn, great sentiment, and the video is first rate.
Here in Australia, every year there are more and more record breaking weather events, the population is expanding beyond our ability to cope with the demands that puts on the infrastructure, and our world heritage coral reefs are being destroyed by warming waters and big businesses that dredge straight through them stating only that they've "done the impact studies and there's nothing to worry about".
(sorry about the rant)
I'll leave it to others, with more experience than me, to give advice on the production and the mix, but I will say that I didn't mind the ending at all. Great job.

Steve, thanks for your time and input.  At some point in the process, I use cheap Sony Walkman style ear buds to see if I'm in the ballpark.  Thanks for the comment about the beginning and ending which were changed due to popular demand.

Walt, it's always good to hear from you.  I remember you fine comments from before.  Maybe the Science Channel will hear of this ;)

Wayne, we hear of your hot summers and climate changes, too.  It breaks my heart to hear of the reefs slow destruction, which is why I included shots of the beautiful corals while they still are in decent shape.  Thank you for your kind words and time.

Like the new mix Lynn. The video is awesome and the music sounds good. I do however like to look at earth as God's planet and He let's us live here and call it home. It is man that does destroy everything on it and in it, and it has been that way ever since mans existence and will be our final fall. For the most part you do show the greed of man running rampant from continent to continent, on land, in the air and in the sea. Love above all heals all things. Great work on the video, I jealous.

Peace and Blessings, John
