Our Planet - Remixed 4/7/14 (start, ending, and distortion addressed)
Last fall I posted this video and got a lot of good feedback. I received many good suggestions on improving the mix and have incorporated many of them into this new mix. Since that time, I have added to my mixing arsenal with new monitors and the ARC 2 system which greatly helped with my room inadequacies. I am reposting this video, and I'm hoping that you can give me some feedback as to how I did. Of course, it's still open to your ideas, and I welcome and thank you for your participation. This is a brand new version as of 4/7/14. I addressed the start, ending, and distortion issues that have been pointed out to me. I want to thank all who have contributed. If you can stand it, I'd love to hear whether I was successful or not. It is now called "Our Planet HD". It can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/w...7PrwXH0HBVSjkxoW1xiTaw I highly recommend that you view this in HD if it doesn't automatically play it in HD.

Hi Lynn, I listen on a laptop so I can't really analyze a "mix". I enjoyed the tune and the message. Also, the front and the end need to be not so abrupt I think.

@ Tim and Tony-Thanks for your replies and compliments. As for the abrupt ending, I have so many songs that fade out that I wanted to try something different. I was caught off guard about the 8 bar beginning, though. I'm open to ideas. Perhaps some sound f/x leading into the beginning? I still have some spare video clips.

Thank you, John for your kind remarks. As for the video, I googled free video clips and public domain stuff. There's a company called Video Blocks that offered a week of free downloads, no strings attached, that provided most of my clips. They offer a choice of mpeg or mov. clips, and I chose the mov. clips because they translate to HD better. If you're willing to dig a little, there's a ton of stuff out there waiting to be used.

I'd almost opt for a drum opening - introduce the energy. Anyway, sounds great. And the video is very catchy, even if not in HD. @

Thanks AT for the kind words. I'm thinking about the beginning, but I'll wait before I leap. Youtube is a little more convoluted than some sites, so when I make a change, I want it to be right. Your idea is on my list.

Nice one, Lynn. Good theme, good performance. For the intro, perhaps something along the lines of the reverse cymbal swell as suggested by Tony, but layered - picture the intro to Roundabout with a crash on the "one". For the ending, perhaps a double hit? Mix-wise, sounds pretty good on my cheap PC headphones here work.

Hi There, This is the type of song that I wish I would have wrote. Harrison, Sting, McCartney and Lennon would be proud of it. I like every thing about it. The long vocal notes seem a bit long for your style, that could just be me, and I'm on a lap top listening. The video works well with it, I just thought there should have been more of you and your guitar in the video!!! Cheers, Terry

Really good song, Lynn. Video and music coordinated nicely. Everything sounded really good except it seemed there was a weak low end. The music has a really nice drive to it and I could hear a deep bass and percussion lending itself to enhancing that drive. Just a thought. I have great hope for the planet because I remember when streams and rivers were turning green. We're turning things around. later, buddy!

Steve, I like both your ideas on the beginning and ending of this song. Thanks for your input and kind words. Tim, thank you for your time and compliment. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The song took about 3 weeks to write and record, but the video took about a weekend to compile. There's a lot of great and free clips out there. Rikkie, I did intend to make this version a bit louder than the original, but I'm sorry you heard distortion. Of course, the guitar's meant to be distorted but not the mix. I don't hear it on my end, but if others hear it, I can back off the limiter in a heartbeat. Hi Terry, are you in Colorado? I really appreciate your extraordinary compliment, being mentioned in the same breath as those names. Yeah, some of the vocal notes are long, but I wanted to prove that I can do more than quarter notes. I couldn't show more of myself in the video because, basically, I'm all torso these days, and I didn't want to scare anyone away.

Lynn dude :) your (more heavier) songs like these always remind me of Blue Oyster Cult and this one has some Rick Derringer in there in both vocal and guitar tones. the chord cadences are true homage to real radio rock of the late 70s. what brings this up to a whole 'nother level is the video and theme/ message portrayed in namely and lyrics - brilliant crisp film clips and shots (taj mahal, Rome etc..) / I gave you a like on YOuTube. went to comment too but you now have to double-log in to uTube to comment(?new) those f*ckers and i forget my google login it's just in my cookies somewhere ;p anyway so posting here my thoughts on your music as I just love true rocknroll - cheers! - Daren :)

Daren, you seem to have a feel for my inspirations. This song definitely has its roots in classic 70's rock with a little Todd Rundgren thrown in. Thanks for your positivity and your own very fine works. Dan, your words are much appreciated. I always enjoy reading your reviews throughout the forum.

I like the song and remember commenting before. Can you post it as an wav file? Maybe it's Youtube but it sounds distorted to me. I love the theme of the pieces. Sad really when you think about Malaysian flight 370. They keep finding junk in the ocean but not plane. How are they supposed to find a plane in an ocean full of junk? To bad it did not crash in the middle of the Pacific. It probably would have floated on top of all that plastic, the size of Texas, in the water.

I remember this one. What ever you have done to it has made it even sound better. Are those bongo sounds that you are using in this? Nice touch! Great vocals, video is a good match, and the lyrics are the crux of the song (nice writing). As an old tree hugger, and bug and bunny lover this song has special relevance for me. Unfortunately, the new IPCC report has given us more "stuff" to worry about.

Hi, Robert. Thanks for listening again and your welcome input. I'm sorry you are getting distortion on your end, but Rikkie said the same thing, so you're not alone. I can put up an MP3 file on Soundclick, but I've not yet posted a 16/44.1 wave file anywhere. Do you have any suggestions? Gobbler? BTW, is the distortion there at low volume? Freddy, this is what I was hoping for when I remixed this song. I've changed my mix technique, and this is the result. The bongos come from EZ Drummer's Latin Percussion. They were there the first time around, but barely discernable. I read the new IPCC report, too, and my next project is to figure out how to make powdered water-just add air.

Yeah, I heard the distortion as well, but when I turned down the Flash plugin in Firefox, it helped a lot. Not sure it is your mix Lynn. Also, whatever you've changed in your mixing...keep it up! Regards, Dan

Glenn, thanks for your time and comments. This new song of yours would make a good video because there's already a story there waiting to happen. Dan, thanks again for your input. The ARC 2 system really helped to take my room out of the mixes. I don't use Firefox anymore, but it would probably be a good idea to check my mixed on it from time to time. Thank you so much Scotty for you comments. I love the new song that you and your friend did, and I'm glad that you're feeling better. Rikkie, I'm still sorry your hearing the distortion, but you've narrowed it down to the vocal. Maybe it's simply my voice;) Daryl, the percussion was there before, but somewhat buried in the mix. The ARC 2 allowed me to hear it as it should be heard. Btw, I just love "Sway". You two really have it going. Keep it up!
