Our good friend Jimmy
Jimmy (Gentry) hasn't been feeling well for a few months now. He's had terrible pain in his jaw and has a hard time sleeping or eating (or anything else). He just found out it's cancer. The doctor said they'll have to pull all his teeth, then he'll have to go through radiation and chemo. To top it off, he has no job and no insurance. He was hesitant to tell everyone on the forum, but I knew you good folks would want to know. He'd appreciate your prayers and good wishes. OK, some have asked about donating to the cause, so Reece generously set up a paypal account for that reason. Albert noted that it could hinder him getting Medicaid/care? if he has too much money, so we'll keep that in mind too. If you have more questions, ask Reece (Beagle) or me. Farther down in this thread, Jimmy gives more details about his ordeal so far. http://www.beaglesound.com/jimmyman/index.html

Mark - Janet and I were discussing that very thing a day or two ago. If there's interest in doing this I think we can get it organized.

Beagle, Will the offerings go direct to an account Jimmy can access? That seems ideal. Anyways, I advise that you dot your I and cross your T so that everything appears proper and correct. Charitable collections can sometimes create misunderstandings. I hope you receive this as a positive message that will be helpful. Thanks for taking the lead. very best, mike

Mike - there's not a way that I can do that to my knowledge. This is the same way we did the charitable collection for Bob (RobertB) a couple of years ago and it worked out fine. I have no way of giving anyone a charitable donation receipt. I don't really have a way of showing that I am giving him everything I receive. If someone doesn't trust me or does not like the terms that I have mentioned then they will have to donate to Jimmy directly themselves. I'm only doing this to help him. and no offense taken at all. everyone needs to be informed of the terms. I have the website ready to go but I need to make sure the donation thru paypal is working correctly so I need a volunteer to PM me that they will be willing to donate and verify that my system is working for me. PM me and I'll send you the link to the webpage and we'll make sure it's working correctly.

As most of you know, I have gone through this very thing myself just recently. I want to get this post in early as a word of caution concerning the collection of money. This is in no way meant as a political statement, but as a warning based on real life experiences. So, let's look at the basics, and make sure we have the facts clear from the start, "i"s dotted, "t"s crossed, as stated above.' I don't know who Jimmy is, I think I know, and if I am correct, he is a U.S. citizen. Which is a plus, if you give me a minute to explain. The notes that he has no job or insurance is also a positive in a situation like this. With no job and no insurance, he is elligible for (a) charity and (b) disability....but he has to maintain a total lack of funding in order to remain elligile. In the states, he must be taken care of. Doctors are required to treat him, and hospitals also must treat him, regardless of ability to pay. The first step is to apply for temporary disability. Make sure that there are no moneys in any accounts that he can access. The disability for myself got held up several times while we jumped through the hoops set before us, but in the end, once we discovered that I had $600 too much in an IRA account, we were able to get "Medical Assistance" which is the Medicaid Access card, which will cover everything including perscriptions at 100%. But that first $600 had to be withdrawn and spent on medical bills, with reciepts to prove it, the penalty to the IRS was waved, but that was just the bank being nice. The reasoning for this precaution is that, the money you set aside for him, while well intended, may actually hurt him by giving him access to money that is not enough to pay the huge bills he will see, at the same time delaying or negating the Medicaid help which can really help, and destroying the charity help that doctors and hospitals are willing to provide. Everything must go through the hoops correctly. Get the donations thing working, it will help, but keep it off to the side until he has his medical assistance established... On the disease side, it appears from the limited information in Janet's post, Jimmy waited much longer than I did before getting help. For whatever reasons, he was already having trouble eating and large amounts of pain. For myself, the pain level was moderate, extra strength over the counter tylenol every three hours, needing them sooner, maybe every two hours...you know something is wrong. But I was able eat, that was a big plus, since the body was still relatively strong when treatment started. With out getting into details, research has led us to find that this type of throat cancer is growing, more than 30,000 new cases every year over the amount of the previous years. Most are in the same area, and respond very well to radiation and chemo. It is a brutal treatment plan, but it works. Good luck, Jimmy. Positive attitude is very important...you can beat this, many people beat it every year. Stay strong, and if you want to talk to someone who has just gone through the treatment, call me @ 814-266-1603, or albertsekely@yahoo.com I am home and available every day. Later Albert

Albert, that's a very good point. I was thinking that same thing, since I heard of that problem with regard to a young friend who needed a complicated medical procedure. Hopefully we can work through this without it hurting his position. I believe he's been looking into this for several months and they thought it was teeth and this maybe this or that. Finally, after several tests and several doctors, they found the cancer. Very sad.

Albert - thank you for the advice, it is well received and I will try to make sure that Jimmy has seen your warnings and help. I'm sure there will be no problems on the record to hurt him in any way. OK everyone, I think we're working correctly now. http://www.beaglesound.com/jimmyman this website is a dedication to help Jimmy. paypal extracts payment now even for "donations" - but my plan currently is that I will match the amount they extract as my donation. so for example, a $50 donation actually only yields $48.25 with the other $1.75 being skimmed off the top by paypal. my plan is to donate the $1.75 as my contribution for each of the paypal fees on each transaction.
