Well we are getting less bugs reported in the forums I'm not sure what that means but it's probably good news. Cake tech support would have a better idea I'm sure.

However we have 60 to 70 reproducable X3E bugs shown here in post #1 not all of them trivial that really need fixing. If there are any I have missed please let me know.

No word or ETA on X3F sadly.

Cheers.

I can't speak for any hive mind, but I think five free updates is pretty good going, value-for-money wise. And I'd be surprised if there was one this late in the cycle; they usually release in Autumn / Winter.

fair enough, though i see the "free updates" as "free bugfixes" at least as far as the x-series goes
(eta)so was that a x3f or x4?

My view is there is enough important and outstanding issues to warrent X3F (see post#1 for specifics). X4 will bring it's own unique set of issues as with all new software. I don't regard service releases as 'free' in regards to fixing faults, nor would I generally expect to pay for new software in order to fix bugs.. What Cakewalk have been doing with X3 has been great but there is still a lot to do, I do hope they will keep it up. Having this sort of commitment shows us how Gibson/Cakewalk will handle future releases can only improve sales if done right (so far so good).

And why do people quote long threads? Why? Edit out everything except the info you are responding too.

In regards to X4 we don't know the release date, we are assuming it will be the same as always but we don't know that. I'm probably not going to buy X4 until X4C comes out based on past experience, but I will maintain an open mind depending on how well it is received in the forums after one or two months have expired (the "love in" period). Regardless that's at least a year to live with X3E's outstanding problems from my angle perhaps a lot longer if there is any change from the perceived normal schedule. Not to take away that X3E is the best X release so far by a mile.

One practical consideration is QC time. I don't know Cakewalk's plans re updates or whatever, but what I do know is that if there was an update now, it would take time to QC. Then if/when a new version comes out, there would need to be another round of QC. The way I've seen most other software companies work, and I doubt Cakewalk is radically different, is it's a lot faster to fold old updates into a new version and QC everything at once.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

Any release of any software should have QA time just like it takes developer time. If QA does automated testing it's much less of an issue. Most of the code should be reusable in X4.

I think a better point would be that there's not much point in fixing something that is going to be rewritten and redesiged from scratch from a project management perspective (let's say drum maps get a complete redesign in X4, what's the point in fixing old code?). However from the customer perspective they just want something that works without many visible bugs which they can use right now and are not really concerned with the software development life cycle.

If the attention they are paying to X3 and even what they did with X1 had been applied to X2 there would not have been those ugly little Beeps spazz outs near the end of that cycle. I just wanted to know they were at least TRYING to fix stuff. In retrospect I think the Baker's hands were tied due to the previous owners. This slew of updates, even when the program was already working a million times better almost from the beginning, is highly encouraging. Seems like it's mostly obscure and/or easily workaroundable* quirks at this point.

I'd check the list again. Many are not trivial and plenty have been around for a long time. Yup there are many that can be worked around but the tradeoff between severity vs quantity vs available workarounds is still too high IMHO. Still it's so much better than X2 right now and yes Cakewalks performance recently has been more than encouraging.

Well one thing I've learned throughout my recent headfirst dive into the computer world and something that I learned long ago about life in general... nothing is perfect so stick with what works best and diversify when it doesn't.

If only I had applied that philosophy to my love life as a young man. ;-)

I think this one can be easily confirmed.

It's about the difference in functionality between the browser and right clicking in a bin, when using plugin layouts.

Sustain pedal events being ignored, also note off events being ignored. Worse with Ivory Pianos - Confirmed by Cakewalk as likely related problems. Other users reproduced this also.

Sometimes drag selecting tracks in track pane doesn't select certain tracks. This is worse with collapsed folders, but has been confirmed and reproduced by Cakewalk in an X3 template with no collapsed folders.

Can't use Contorl-F4 in key bindings successfully. If a window is open, it instead closes the window. This has been confirmed and reproduced by Cakewalk.

CTRL+F4 used to be the easiest way to close any window in Sonar 4.0.2 and probably many other older versions.
Example: quickly open an event view to check something ( ALT+V+E )
Quickly close that same window after seeing what I needed to see ( CTRL+F4 )

I suspect, ( haven't tested it ) that if you have a floating window open in X3
then CTRL+F4 will close it. So good. That's how it's always been. I hope it stays that way.

I'm concerned about the new owners of Cakewalk also. It seems to me there are some serious bugs left unfixed. Sadly I can't use X3, because of a show stopper bug for me that I posted here. If there is no X3F, I may decide to jump ship and go to a new program. I've already been burned once by X1. I couldn't use it because of bugs.

I've used Cakewalk products since the DOS days and there was only 1 version, Cakewalk Pro Audio 7 that almost no one could use and Cakewalk bent over backwards to make that one right. Let's hope the new owners will be as responsible.

No Steve it hasn't always been that way. Yes likely you're right that it was the default operation of Contorl-F4, but in every single version of Sonar except X3, I've been able to use key bindings to set my own shortcut keys, including Control-F4. You're also right Control-F4 is closing a floating window open in X3.

Alt-F4 is also a default way of closing windows in Cakewalk products, I've left that one as is. Like you, I really like a quick way of closing a window, for me Alt-F4 is just fine. There's no reason why a user shouldn't be able to reprogram any shortcut key combination using key bindings. Contorl-F4 is the only shortcut that can't be reprogrammed by key bindings. If a floating window is open, it'll close it no matter what the key binding is. This has been confirmed by Cakewalk as a bug.
