I got to say that i loved the grove 3 pass and i am still using it. there is a lot of information to cover. right now I am working through the sample tank and the and the Kontakt courses. Awesome stuff. There is a good video on mixing with X1 in there too. of course the information can be applied to X2. I really liked the mastering out of the box course. It served as a great introduction to the many plug-ins out there that can be used with mastering. Thank you bakers for this!! How is that for positive?

Bub chuckebaby now take lanes ? :0 "whistles to himself" I watched a competitor's video regarding Swipe Comping ... I see where they are going with Take Lane's. They were horrible when I first started using them, then they improved a lot when I installed the A patch. IOW ... I'm not afraid of them any more. +1 to that bub. i hear ya man. im a big fan of layers, its probably just going to take some time getting used to them.

There were a lot of automation enhancements in X1, and others more in X2. I printed the pages of the documentation and studied them ; it has been very useful and necessary (i use very often automation, and it is now a real pleasure - i remember Sonar 4 ;-) !).

Working well here too. Not much to add though since pretty much everything I like about it has been covered. I do have a 90 minute, 16 track live gig mix project that I'm about to begin, so I'm particularly looking forward to using CE, BREVERB, automation enhancements, timline zoom, left/right-click selection, etc. All stuff I've already used, but not on a project like this.

My Success story is that my songwriting buddy and I (the Balancines) were voted as the No 1 track on a Radio station here in UK over this last christmas...... Cambridge105fm. I was very proud and it (Red Kite) along with the rest of the tracks on the EP, it was all recorded, tracked, mixed and mastered in the box with Sonar X2. I have issues with the software too, but I love my Sonar and its helped an old boy feel young again. The EP is here. http://www.reverbnation.com/thebalancines Don't be too critical and take it all away !!! Cheers Chris in a cold UK.

Sorry I bailed guys. Needed food and sleep and spent this morning doing a bit of sound proofing around my door. Glad this kept going and thanks Scott for posting those links. They'll be going in my pile of bookmarks. Hope you are all having a good day and thanks again for sharing the positive experiences. Despite the little bit of snark I think you all know as well as I that even though it's not perfect (what is in this world?) that Sonar is a very unique and interesting program and offers a heck of a lot for the price. That's why I bought it and use it and I'm sure the same goes for many of us... even the snarkers. Otherwise we wouldn't be here. Cheers.

Cakewalk has been my software of choice because that's what I liked when getting into computer recording in late 90's, got used to it and it has never held me back and has been good. My first machine I had lots of problems with drop outs but managed. The machine in specs has been great. If I get the opportunity to build another machine, I'm really due, I'll upgrade to cakes latest and greatest. I'm sure I'll always be critical of things like control surfaces listed but not working correctly etc. Someone mentioned color options listed but do nothing. Sorry guys but that is unfinished software.

@WDI... I was working through every feature in the manual and a startling amount of stuff just doesn't work. Fortunately most of it isn't really imperative to my style but it is a little odd that those things are still there. I can only assume they are remnants of Sonar's past and has been replaced with more effective and modern methods. It would be nice if it got cleaned up a bit but for the most part the things I need it to do it does and a lot of that stuff isn't advertised. It is still in the manual though which can cause a lot of confusion for a newbily n00b such as myself. But that's a little too negative for this thread. Another nice thing about Sonar is the fast moving forum which quickly helps me confirm whether something is known to be broken or if I'm just screwing something up.

Beepster I've been putting scratch tracks together for a new album the past week or so. Despite the quirks the Ruler Zoom, Take Lanes, improved audio engine and PRV have been making things a lot easier on me for tracking and preliminary editing versus X1. I've already mixed a couple tunes using some of the new effects last fall and they're great too. Particularly TH2 and R-Mix and X2 seems to handle the LP-64 effects much better because I don't lose sound when making tweaks (audio engine improvements). You? I have my little gremlins here and there, but overall I am finding that X2a seems to be just "there" quietly doing its job and that's fine by me. Really, at the end of the day, that's more than enough. When I open X2, I feel more at home...

When I open X2, I feel more at home... You know... this is something I may not have really stressed enough here. X1 was very foreign and difficult for me to use. It was cool and all but I was having a real hard time figuring out how to do basic stuff and I seemed to be tripping over myself quite a bit. It was... awkward. Once I installed X2 I was flying through stuff much easier. That was mostly due to the ruler zoom and the take lanes I think. It may have been I was just more experienced in the Sonar way at that point but I don't think so. It just... fits better, despite the quirks. Cheers, man. I hope you've been having a better time working through some of the issues the program was giving you. :-)

Peter and Beepster both you guys expressed the advantage of X2 exceedingly well. I was relatively at ease with X1 when it came out. I had some time to read the manual and was able to get an understanding of the philosophy behind it. Yet it would cause me a little head scratching from time to time. It also took me longer than it should have to figure out the menu system. Where things were was sometimes not where I expected them to be. That is in the past for me, mostly. X2 does feel better and looks better too. It seems to have more power with how I want things done. You all mention things I believe contribute to that over all feeling. Keep it up guys. Your posts are not going unnoticed.

It also took me longer than it should have to figure out the menu system. One thing I would like to see is a consolidated global menu for every single menu within the general Sonar program. Kind of like a God Mode. Have it all laid out so you pop open this menu then you have the sub menus for every view, area, screen, etc... That is one of the more confusing elements of the X series (or perhaps Sonar in general as I've never used previous versions) for me. It seems certain very important features are tucked away in odd places that one wouldn't automatically think to look. If they were all in one place even if the elements not being currently used in the project are grayed out I think it would help people not only be able to access things when they have a brainfart or haven't fully grasped the program it would help the user actually see what features, tools, options etc are available to them. Not saying replace the current system... just have one massive menu that covers it all. I said God Mode because those familiar with God Mode in Win 7 understand how very very cool and useful it is to have all possible options and settings in one place. Cheers.

My positive comment is that I'm getting more music done, and faster. No one specific feature, just "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts" deal. Then again, I don't use Staff View LOL. Although actually, I guess technically that's not true because I use the guitar neck view sometimes, and that's part of Staff View.

Yeah, GodMode is a pretty cool hack that also works in Vista. Here's the info... Gotta be careful with the God Mode in Vista though. Some users have reported instability and crashes when implementing it in Vista. In Win 7 it's absolutely heaven sent though. When I first found out about it I was a little peeved that MS didn't make that a default option because it is much more similar to the old XP control panel. After a while though I realized that a large number of current PC users would likely end up screwing up their systems poking at it... thus the muck around that is the Win 7 options menus. Even still though the way Win 7 handles settings even in default mode is still pretty easy to navigate. Cheers, Scott.
