Okay, now it's mandatory that every guitarist on the forum learn Jay Graydon's "Peg" solo and post it!

That should prove interesting...

Hey Ed...you're right...
I've always loved trying to figure out favorite solo's note for note...
And most of the time, they are not as complicated as they sound...
this one is the opposite...its actually harder to play than it sounds...
some real oddball stuff in there...

I read some stuff about the solo...it was done in sections and took a whole day to compile.
I wonder if he could actually play it in real-time...
http://www.jaygraydon.com/guitatxt.htm

Thanks mewsician2...do you have a version?

Ok, Mark, since it's mandatory

Ed, you're cracking me up! If I were you, I would've claimed the "My primary instrument is da bass!" exemption. In fact, if there are ever any threads requiring posting an Allan Holdsworth solo, I'm changing primary instruments, just so I can claim exemption!

But, I think all participants get at least one point for trying and one point for ending on the right note. Automatic 2 points seems fair, no?

More than fair. I've retired my link. Kodos to you guys for actually tackling it and making it sound musical.

Roger, that's interesting information, it make sense, it sounds like a patchwork quilt.

No problem at all, M. It was mostly for amusement purposes, to follow up on your challenge. I'd have to spend more time on it to let it have longevity.

RLD: Both of your solo posts were great. This is my most favorite song. I remember it when I was about 7 years old coming out and loving it then.

Just wanted to chime in.

Hope Chaz gets well soon and look forward to hearing the final piece(s).

OTC, RLD but I listened to all your songs on Soundclick. Very clean recording! Any secrets there to share?

Can you share what techniques, plugins, etc. you use?

Thanks,

NO!
I tried this once when the song wasn't that old, and I was a much better player than I am today, and ended up with my own version which doesn't even compare to Jay's or yours, but thanks for asking!

Thanks Dale,
I really don't have any secrets...
I use a Fostex digital mixer...all audio is transferred via lightpipe to a Dakota card...
I use a table top POD for gits...I have a TC Electronic Finalizer that I use instead of plugins...
well, I use a Vintage Warmer now and then...but nothing out of the ordinary.

Hey Jeff,
When I did my solo's I was just doing it for fun, but you can certainly use them if you want.
Only prob is I tracked at 41/24 so I don't know if that makes it incompatible with the project or not...?

Hi, all!

Just checking in. Felt like being a wise guy, so I'll note that even Steely Dan themselves must've completed this track in shorter time!

Okay, there, I've done it! So, how is everyone?

Too funny.

Basic tracks were done quickly... but the lead vocal was tough and it took time get it to an acceptable level. Plus we're all so busy.

Chaz has had his own difficulties... but it's all in his hands now.

Hope you're doin' well Chaz!

How's it sounding?

Heaven forbid!!!

You don't want to hear me sing.

You sang it much better than I could have.

I had a session player come in and do me a solid.

It was a little out of his range so it took some time to clean it up, but it came out sounding pretty "Donald".

I submitted it for consideration.

As far as i know, Chaz was waiting for your drum tracks
which he said he received... and had to add in and clean
up my vocals.

From Chaz:
I just need to add in and clean up Pluto's vocal tracks

Pluto...

You are right, but Steve actually stated the most recent cause for the delays. I was hoping to finish the "studio" version last week, but I was dealing with a lot of pain from my extractions, being on medication and on doctor's orders to rest.

-------

All.....

I ask for your continued patience. Jeff is in daily contact with me, so he can keep everyone informed in case I am unable to do so.

Fwiw.... The mix is sounding very good right now. I finished mixing in the individual drum tracks tonight. That only leaves the new main vocal and BGV tracks to import and mix in.

I thought the Peg forum collab was for Cakewalk
forum members only, not session players who
are not forum members. No?

I could have easily brought in many professional
session players to get in on this but i didn't.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

New main vocal? If the new main vocal is an outside non forum
member session player replacing me (a true forum member),
then it won't be a true cw forum collab. Had to throw my
two cents in. As far as i know it and was lead to believe, i
had the lead vocal spot. Fill me in. Thx.

Hi Pluto,

Bad choice of words on my part.

Let me rephrase it by saying that while the "Peg Pile-on" was open to submissions, I had a friend do me a favor, just for fun, of attempting the vocal on this one in my studio. I'm a Cakewalk Forum Member and I tracked it using Sonar.

I'm sure you could have done the same, but your submission was fine.

I tracked my friend around the same time that you got involved. I certainly wasn't trying to bump anybody or turn this into a competition.

I shouldn't have used the words "session player". Although I think that's an accurate description of all of us, it might imply that someone was getting paid.

AFAIK, We're all doing this just for fun. I'm pretty sure THAT was the only criteria.

Would love to hear everyone else's take on this. (Pun intended)

Again... I'm interested in hearing how Chaz sorts it all out.

Hope you and I are okay here Pluto.

RE: Peg Pile-on (songs forum edition) 2005/10/03 10:00:25 (permalink)
feels like a real steely dan production now doesn't it?

ok .. to clarify, this is a "pile-on" . which means anybody who wants to take
a shot at a part is welcome to. the result will not be a single version, but several.
that's part of the interesting aspect of this is to see what each person brings to
what is a "standard" of our generation.

i was thinking about making some sort of web applet which would allow one to
dial in which version they would like to play .. however, i don't think sonar makes
a good web app without *active scripting support* (sorry, but had to put that
dig in there).

anyway, your vox will be in one or more versions of when we get this thing done.
if you want to bring in a vocalist or other musician to do a part, you're most welcome
to. chaz is going to lay in the bed tracks and then we'll substitute in what ever .. so it's
not a big deal. i can make this offer because i'm reasonably sure my part won't be
replaced .. as there are limited number of fender rhodes left in the world ;-)
(oooh .. what a bait eh?).

and above all, this is supposed to be fun and to see what we can do, not to get
all bent out or too serious about it.

No worries here SteveD, was just expressing my opinion.
And Jeff... i still say it's not a "songs forum edition" as
stated in the title, if outside non forum members are
involved. Sorry, it's just my opinion. I hear ya on the
rest, no worries here. I look forward to hearing all the
different versions too. Yes, it's a fun enjoyable project.

i didn't think of that .. but steve said "this guy was singing where i was
last night and is great .. maybe he can give it a shot .. " and i said "cool" ...
so the moral of the story is .. .. it's steve's fault ;-) actually, i'm not all
that rules oriented .. probably why i get audited every year ;-) but if
you want to reign it back to the original post title, i'm ok with that.

Good thing you guys didn't end up using samples or loops for drums.

We'd have to disqualify the whole project.

UPDATE:

Made quite a bit of progress mixing in several new tracks today, including all of Jeff's BGV tracks, Roger's two guitar solo tracks and the first half of Jerry's vocal track.

Next up will be finishing up the second half of Jerry's track, importing and working on Pluto's vocal and BGV tracks and additional tweaking as a whole.

Also..... I am starting to feel better now with each passing day and that will allow me to do more mixing up to the first surgery.

Thanks.
