Pics of DAW Setups?

It's going to take me awhile to read the vast amount of information in this forum and others as far as doing research on Sonar as possibly a new software suite for me once I build a new PC (which will be an i7 based system).

I figured out that DAW stands for (D)igital (A)udio (W)orkstation, so I was curious to know if anyone was willing to share some pics of their DAW workstation, whether large or small. It may give some inspiration to those who have yet to build one of their own.

I have built many PC's over the years so I am very knowledgeable on the tech end when it comes to building. But I plan to build a small studio of my own to simply produce some good instrumental music that I can use for background music in videos and other things. I will pretty much be a one-man composer (once I start learning the basics--and I have ALOT to read and study on).

Also, I am not quite sure what the MIDI keyboards are--would buying a piano (or desktop keyboard), one that you can connect to the PC for recording be used or would it have to be something different?

So how about it? Share those workstation pics!

This is my previous DAW that was run on a lap top

The new one doesn't look much different since the setup is basically the same with a monitor instead of a lappy on the desk.

In photobucket.... when you put your mouse on a picture, a new window pops up around it.... below the blue banner there are 4 options... the second one down is DIRECT LINK.... click it and copy it and paste it into the PICTURE icon in the forum post icon bar.... the one with the mountain and sun image to the left of the smiley face icon.

That is a very nice setup Norrie! I do have a question though, what type of speakers do you have on the sides of your LCD monitor? I would think if I was to build a DAW of my own at some point, it would be a good idea to get decent listening monitors for proper sound. I sure hope to build a small studio myself at some point (along with my future video editing workstation which may be separate from the composing station).

    Hi thank you !

THis is just in the back room of my house I will be moveing to a new place soon though.

They are just small computer speekers from logitec they cost about £10

The only reason for haveing them there is to have a quick listen to something I am working on through them I know if it sounds not bad on them then after a mix then I am on to something good since most people nowadays listen to things on laptops / Ipod dock and all that type of thing.

I dont use them often the main monitors are KRK Roket 8s and they are awesome for the price

You will need to get your self a set of good studio monitors :)

There are lots out there so you will need to take your time.
I actualy plan to learn to do some video editing my self.

Mike, what size monitors are you those?  Is the one on the left a 23"?  I am considering either a 21.5" or a 23" and only have room for just one display.  Which one do you like best in your set-up?  Which one would you keep if you could only use one?

By the way, +1 on the krk 8's  I really liked the sound of the krk 8 Generation 2's like you have, I just lacked the budget to get the 8" monitors & the G2 in the 5 & 6 inch size sounded really hyped in the the low end.  They had a set of used krk 5's that were the the older G1 designs & they didn't seem to color the sound that way, plus they were used so.... cheaper still.  So that's what I am using still.  I'd love to get a 2nd set.

Thanks man I was useing a set of Tapco S5's and spent ages decideing on an upgrade from them they were ok for starting out but quite boxy sounding

I tryed the KRK5s there wasnt much difference to my Tapcos the KRK 6's I really did not like the sound to them at all and I found them to be boxy aswell and I was woryed about the bass from the 8s but was very suprised when I switched over to them in the listening room its such a sweet sound !
I heard them and fell in love with them went back a week later tryed out a load of others like the mackies and yamahas etc then finaly the KRK section again and had to buy the 8s I would recomend them to any one :)

Thanks for the kind words on my set up aswell :)

Maybe its the wide-angle lens that fools the viewer, but it looks like there is very little unoccupied space in the room.

Mike, what size monitors are you those?  Is the one on the left a 23"?  I am considering either a 21.5" or a 23" and only have room for just one display.  Which one do you like best in your set-up?  Which one would you keep if you could only use one?

    Hey Syntheticpop
On the left is a 22 inch Acer http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/monitor/0000/Acer/V223W/V223Wsp2.shtml
The right is a Hassnpree http://www.hannspree.com/US/product_detail.aspx?id=25987&key=hf207

I would pick the Acer if I had to only have 1.  Both monitors are good, but the Acer is a little bigger and easier to see.

Had to pack everything up and move for a bit while we're getting a start-up business going, but here's a link to my setup (the images are too large to include in the message - at least without annoying everyone).  Yes, there were too many flat, reflective surfaces, but I used to use some homemade gobos (like a mobile laundry rack with a heavy moving blanket) that were ugly as sin but worked ok for recording.  A  LOT of gear had to be sold to survive even before the attached pics were taken (I had a real G.A.S. sickness ;-)  Since then, more items had to go to make it until the company gets going.  I guess it will be good in the end since it's really made me have to think about each piece and decide if I can get along without it (usually that answer is yes).  Out of 14 guitars and 24 amps (power and pre), I'm now down to two custom guitars, three preamps and only one power amp.  Hopefully I'll get to keep those!  Here's the link:

Hey Craig, the thing I really liked about your studio was the view!...sometimes being a musician who writes, plays, records, produces, mixes and masters their own material it can seem like a solitary existence...atleast if you have a window with a view you remember that there is an outside world

That's some awesome gear Craig....I can understand when it can be tough to have to sell alot of it but sometimes a little pain in the short term make things better in the long run.

I would guess that a studio can be as complex as you want it to be. But I can see that when composing music and such it can be a solitary thing since you are often by yourself making music.

A question for a separate thread but, I have wondered what would make a good set of monitors to start out with. Norrie's setup gave me something to look into of course other thoughts would be great as well.
