Please excuse my excitement for Bapu
I've started sanding Bapu's bass today and since he's seen it now I thought I'd share these. I think it's going to thump. Most of the "scary" parts are done. I tried to show the neck contour but I think I needed Steve to take the pictures...now that would be cool And don't feel sorry for Bapu....he's not committed to this thing. I'm hoping that when he plays it the next time we see the Alembic it'll be covered with dust LOL. Hope you all enjoy and I appreciate getting to share my excitement about this. Michael Oh yeah, it's a soft maple back, purpleheart laminate on body/head with dyed holly veneer sandwiched. The neck-thru piece is half of the block I used to make my guitar- hard maple and purpleheart. Ebony fretboard with dual action truss with graphite rods on either side. And for those that don't know....that hole where the bridge will go is for a ground wire. If things keep going as planned and weather permitting I should complete this build and have it in the mail first week of March......so we'll see. One thing...I freehand the body and head design...if it looks like some other bass it wasn't intentional. I re-sawed a piece of purpleheart so if you notice it's what is called "bookmatched". Kind of hard to see with this wood but the darker lines help one to notice.

marcos69 Awesome Michael. So how do you shape the neck? I mean what shape do you begin with, and how do you get to this shape? Mark I have two files...you may be able to see that one is flat and one is curved, both are flat and finer on other side. The way I approach it is filing the center of the neck down to about 1/8 inch of target on first fret. In this build for a 5-string bass the two measurements that I believe to be average are; .85 at first fret and .95 at 12th fret. My targets would be .95 and 1.10. Once I have my "safe" depth then I'll round each one. - BUT I don't go around to the fretboard - I keep an imaginary line about 1/8" from it. I want to a have that 1/8" flat area away from the fretboard. The reason is I'm ruffing in and don't want to nick the fretboard. The next thing is I start filing off the corners between the 1st and 12 frets. Carefull not to remove to much wood is the key. After I have the "middle" of the neck ruffed in then I work the area from 1st fret to head and the area from 12th fret to body. Once I have that much wood gone I repeat the filing working down to my second target. EDIT...Mark I have a precision straight edge with sticky sandpaper (it's in the photo's above) that I use while filing and when I'm close I'll sand with it ...it's long and worked for the bass. (this is for between 1st and 12th frets- for the guitar I used a shorter one) To date my second target is feel. I file to feel and check measurements. I know I don't want to go below "average" measurements because I think those necks are to thin and kill sound. At least I credit much of the sound of my guitar to that and if I'm right the bass will back it up. When I'm at the stage I was today I file carefully to the fretboard and start sanding. I don't sand the edge of the fretboard yet. I sand to it. Well that's where I'm at today. Now it's sand, sand and sand.... (always checking with straight edge) I'll use sandpaper to 400 grit then after sealing I'll get to crazy smooth so the oil finish will shine. I hope this makes sense Mark as I don't know if it's the "right" way....it's just I like to shape and feel as I go. Just don't remove to much wood at a time seems to keep me in the safe zone.

So to get the top cutaway profiled to accommodate the left moob did you work from measurements or a 3-dimensional model? Have you allowed room for growth? Has it got 5 strings because he told you that was the same amount his 4 string Alembic has? Did you know Bapu had an Alembic?

Jon I thought the Alembic was for Am so I added the 5th so he could get a handle on Bm. Left moob? Oh no...I thought he played right handed..... well he'll be alright if they're both the same size. Thanks for the kudos guys.

Wow, Mike, that is absolutely gorgeous. Yeah, I can see the bookmatching. At first, I was wondering why you would use files instead of say a belt sander, but after reading your text, I think I know: better control, and less chance of a slip. I'm curious about your gluing/clamping procedures if you ever feel like sharing those. That is incredible work you're doing. You should be very proud.

Sanding break. Not really my favorite part of the build. Thanks Phil! I don't know about pride Phil but I sure feel lucky. After what I've been through I think the key to building is being able to get ones butt out of a crack. Since I'm just going for it, it's easy to find myself trying to get out of a problem I created lol. What I glue; The laminate block for the neck. The fretboard to neck. The body laminates. The body wings to neck-thru. Laminate to head (maybe). Glue- Elmer's wood (yellow) Titebond III The neck; One block I build big enough to split and yield two necks. Each has to be at least 1 7/8" thick. (which is really the width of the boards so I size them to 4") Number of laminates is based on design. I try not to waste wood but I sure want enough to work with. I plane each board and then rough sand with 80 grit. Using 80 grit gives the wood fibers that interlock with the other board and make for nice joints and a strong bond to each other. Spread a nice even thin coat of glue on both boards. DON'T use to much. This needs to be an even thin coat on each board. The wood glue works very good and will be stronger than the wood. If you apply to much glue clamping won't get it all out. This will really mess it up and there will be a layer of glue in-between the pieces...and that's very ugly. The neck block can be re-sized easy enough if off a little...try to keep one side even. If block pieces are off on each side that can be a lot removed trying to resize. Most bodies are around 1 3/4 so the block can be be resized to 3 3/4"...that doesn't leave much extra wood. The fretboard; This one is critical. Two reasons, the first being the center-line and second being where the scale starts. ( where the nut is placed). The common method I think is for pins to be placed to keep the board in place when clamping. You do not want this board to move out of place. There are numerous methods to "pinning". Another issue is that one doesn't want glue to get on the truss-rod. I use tape to cover the rod and trim it just to cover the rod. I use a 12" radiused block that cover most of the fretboard to clamp with. That applies even pressure across width and length of fretboard. The Body Wings; Again, the wings want to slide when pressure is applied. Wings maynot be the exact same size (thickness) of neck-thru so this may change how one clamps. Another issue is the shape of the wings(body) as they are not straight edges. The easiest way to clamp is when the body is cut out, save the pieces from the block. I use the top and bottom pieces and that gives me straight edges and makes clamping much easier. Aligning the wings to neck -thru can have many factors so it's clamp lightly, check, and repeat. Best keep an eye on it and double check. Once the glue sets, that's it. You may never get it apart....nicely. I use as many clamps as I can get on the pieces. I tighten them as if I were torqueing a head....I mean get the clamps in place snug, check the work, and then try to tighten them evenly. Don't just tighten like one in the middle real tight. The woods going to move unless it's pinned. Go slow and even. The Body: I currently glue the woods together before cutting out body shape. Same procedure's mentioned above. Prep, glue application, and clamping technique with the right glue. Phil I hope I did good and it makes some sense. I think this was easier than the manual Steve suggested...lol. not sure if either is worth reading time.

That does look nice. ... Now don't forget to paint it bright pink with big yellow fluffy flowers on it, maybe a few feathers to boot. Seriously though - the neck to body profile looks really great, nicely done.

bapu Jonbouy Did you know Bapu has an Alembic? Restored. Using the past participle 'had' here is correct parlance, it infers that one had previously gathered or heard that Bapu owned an Alembic. It does not presume that he still has one (an Alembic) nor does it exclude the possibility that Bapu continues to have it (the Alembic) in his possession. However, it is good that Bapu just confirmed that he still has the Alembic I thought he had to complement this fantastic guitar Michael is building that Bapu is also due to have.

ProjectM Man, that'll be a fine bass when it's finished. Actually, it looks great already! No need to do more to it or you'll just ruin that excellent first impression! If I could make instruments like that I'd quit my day job! Man it is so cool to be getting a thumbs up as with all my insecurities about building, it helps me more than I can say. I do appreciate everyone's time and thoughts. I kept a build sheet, best I could with the guitar and now the bass and I have to say, I sure wouldn't quit my day job! I don't know how luthiers make a living doing this. Now I know they are much better than I am and can charge but still....the material costs with shipping charges alone put the price just to high. I wouldn't feel right disclosing info about this bass because I feel that would be Bapu's decision to make. And I have no objections if he chooses to do so. However, we did have a conversation about a bass that would be a better replacement for him and as strange as it is, we each chose the very same bass. Sorry I can't include picture-I'm at work. I do know that money can't replace the satisfaction of building one and especially thinking that I may build one that's good enough for a friend that plays an Alembic...geeze we know how those cats are! I am so anxious to hear his opinion after playing it...I know it will be an honest one and good or bad I need to know. After all, we know it has to play and sound great.
