Plug ins you could not live without?
Forget the bundled stuff. What makes your tracks really shine, in terms of other plugins? And this is from a financial squanderer who has about 19 gazillion plug ins. Me FX UAD - of course. I do not use other compressors and rarely use other EQ. Plus I love the verbs, and the nouns aint so bad either. In fair disclosure, I own all of them and run them on a UAD 2 quad. Melda Productions - multi-band everything. Want to just add echos to the stuff above 3000hz? This is the way. Ditto for chorus, flange, pitch harmonizing... Sound Toys - the Crystalizer or whatever it is called is awesome. Ditto for Echo Boy. These are the closest things I have for a plug in version of Eventide's strangest stuff. PSP - Anything by these gurus. But I use NO2 and Nitro and Vintage Warmer to excess. Plus their 608 or whatever it is called multitap delay is beyond compare. BBE - the stomp pedal collection includes a great Tube Screamer, a great chorus/vibrato and a great echo. Synthy types of stuff Kontakt - I have an obscene library of samples. I love my Ondes Martnonet and Novachord samples though. These are instruments that even I cannot get my hands on. Plus the Abbey Road and the Steven Slate drums are beyond compare. Camel = Alchemy - what can I say? It is the most awesome synth I own in soft form G Force - pick em. Minimonstah, String Synth thingy, Mellotron thingy... and they are cheap by most standards Melda Productions - M Drummer - if you don't know em, look em up. I also have the spectrasonics stuff - the bass thingy, Omnisphere, Stylus.. I love Stylus. I really like Omnisphere. I am prone to use my Ricky for real bass. Again, I own a ton of paid for stuff. But these... I could not make the garbage I make without them. Oh, on bass, Mark Studio 1. Yours?
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

I try not to get emotionally attached to any software, it's unhealthy. Guitars and synthesizers, that's another story. I like to think I could make do with just about anything. However, that may in fact just be rationalization to deal with the fact that I can't afford to buy half the stuff you've got, cowboy. That said, there are a few plugins that I'd be reluctant to part with or would be difficult to replace: Ozone (version 3 still gets used for its harmonic exciter) Voxengo SPAN TT Dynamic Range Meter IKM Fairchild 670 (newest addition to my favorites list) Channel Tools (goes on every stereo track for panning) FabFilter Pro-Q (my go-to track and bus EQ) Voxengo GlissEQ (mostly for remedial EQ) D16 Group Toraverb (not exactly a do-all go-to reverb, but unique) Superior Drummer Kontakt (favorite libs: The Old Lady, a 1923 Steinway, and OTS EEG) SampleTank (keeps surprising me how useful it is for a cheap, dated sampler) Miroslav Philharmonik (I have better strings, but this is the one that seems to get used the most)
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I'd say Pro Channel but McQ would cancel all future movie nights. So I'll say, UAD - not necessarily all but a goodly portion of them, don't own the Lexicon Magnetic - This is a must for drums (for me) Slate FG-X - love this bad boy. It has replaced Ozone4 for me. I'm assuming that there are certain plug ins that are just assumed to be essential and that's why they're not being mentioned. Some might be so indistinguishable from the DAW, that they may seem to be present in every project by default. Shirley, that's the only reason that no one, until now, has mentioned NagBap, right?

On PC: ePhonic's LoFi - Free (love this thing!) Z3ta - how I miss it. On PC and Mac: Waves GTR - Newest addition to my rig. Steven Slate Drums EX Brainworx Sweepclean - Free hi/lo pass filter Camel Crusher - Also free VacuumSound ADT - Yet another freebie On my wishlist: PSP Old Timer and PSP 85 Fabfilter Pro Q For the rest, I'm good w/ bundled plug-ins, both in Sonar and in Logic (Logic's compressor is surprisingly good and versatile, and EXS24 - having an integrated sampler RULES - it was one of the highest items on my Sonar wishlist).

sharpdion23 This thread could get really interesting. I'll stick around to see what other people like. There's been a thread very much like this going on the KVR forum. I just spent 10 minutes trying to find it to post the link, but I seem to have "lost" it. You're right, it's makes for interesting discussions. The KVR thread went both ways: plugs you can't live without and plugs that you thought would be essential that you never use. If it surfaces again, I'll come back and post the link.

I just really love Steven Slate and Kontakt. I don't really use the otehr stuff in Komplete 7 nearly like I do Kontakt. I have way too many sample libraries for Kontakt. But this is the first iteration of a soft sampler I actually liked. And that includes lots of other ones - most recently IKs - befor really going nuts over the Kontakt. Someone mentioned VSM - I love that one too. I actually love all my G Media stuff except for their version of the Arp Odyssey, and not because of the plug. I was always more of a 2600 or a Moog person than the Odyssey. Minimonstah and VSM/Melloman or whatever they call the mellotron thingy are great. And their version of the Oscar synth is just out of this world.

Frankly, I am not sure why I didn't put the Nomad Factory stuff on my list. I love their products. Pretty much every EQ or Compressor or Limiter I use is NF or UA. Studer is a bit intensive on the UAD2 quad. It sounds wonderful and you can gang controls across multiple tracks. I use the new Lex reverb a ton on UAD. And I use the LA2A or the Neve Compressors/EQs or the Harrison or ... so much, that I tend to push my UAD Quad hard. I should probably buy a second. Magnetic does not sound the same to me as Studer. It is way different. You can punch the doog do do out of a sound with Magnetic - so drums or guitars (to me) become even more awesomer than they were. Studer tends to be more like glue with a bit of punch. Magnetic seems to be more like punch with a bit of glue. But that is just what I think. Or as an old friend once told me "Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man"

I'd love the UAD, but I can't really afford it right now, plus, my setup is fairly compact and has to stay that way. It'd be overkill, considering my environment and the stuff I'm working on. I'll give magnetic a try. Thanks!

My NagBap version keeps telling me I need to update... I mostly like my modest array of UAD doodads and my Bootsy freebies aside from the bread and butter plugs (Sonitus) that came with Sonar. Reason is my predominant sound source.
