Point System

I have an idea for perhaps bringing the hostility level down on the forum.  Every member gets 500 good points, and 500 bad points each year (or prorated by month) to dole out.  Everyone would be free to assign their points to another's post, 5 points at a time (or less), good or bad.  Each member's avatar would include a running tally of points assigned to them by others, good minus bad.  This could augment, or replace post count as a metric (have always been highly skeptical of the value of post count as a metric, bless my heart).  Criteria for good post counts could be helpfullness, accuracy, civility, tecnical content, etc.  Criteria for bad posts could include threats, hostility, rudeness, trolling, gratuitous complaints, other TOS violations, B.S., etc.  Folks with huge deficits in points would stand out pretty quickly.  People couldn't gang up on someone without reason, as they'd have a limited number of bad points to dole out each month.  There would be an immediate, personal penalty for undesireable behaviour, and a reward for positivity.  One could recover from sojourns into the dark side by accumulating positive points for helpful posts.  Only the net count, good minus bad, would show.

Human nature being what it is, I think it might tone things down.  Just a random thought on a sleepy Tuesday evening...

A cool example of something kind of like this are the stack exchange sites, instead of an allotment of good/bad points you get points for helping out other users.  Check out an FAQ from one of their sites: http://mechanics.stackexchange.com/faq

Do you think something like that would help the community?

I'm not saying we're going to do that, I think there is a lot of value in still having a place like this forum for open discussion and a community but maybe something like stack exchange for the product-specific forums would keep the questions on topic and diminish the hostility.

I see this as something like when Musicians Fiend offers a free software package from a competitor when you purchase SONAR, i.e., a good idea on the surface but when you really think about it, not so much.

Now if people got becan for being helpful...

In principle, this isn't much different than reviewing a product on a web site, and assigning stars.  Yep, it can be gamed.  But the idea (here), to me, is that there's a penalty for hostile actions, albeit pretty small, and a reward for helpfulness.  It's getting bad enough upstairs that the wheat to chaff ratio is essentially zero.  Am sure the idea could be modified and improved.  Whatever.  I've been here eight years, and I've never seen it this bad.  The manager in me wants to see something done about it...

I completely agree that it's worse now (and has been for nearly 4 months now) than it has been in the entire time I've been here.

every update there are always uproars about how bad things are, but this year has been the worst.

What's troubling is the proliferation of threats of violence.  From total strangers to total strangers.  Reminiscent of my 11 years in L.A. and freeway shootings.  There's an old saying that says if you put a spoon of wine in a barrel of sewage, it's sewage.  And if you put a spoon of sewage into a barrel of wine, it's still sewage.  There's a spoon or two that should be kept away from the wine barrel...

I like the concept, and it could work... someday.  My feeling is that first and foremost, the existing "fire" has to be gotten under control.  Unfortunately, the most effective way to do this would be very labor-intensive for you guys... constant monitoring of forum traffic and immediate (or as immediate-as-possible) response to *any* behavior that's abusive toward the other persons  on the forum - and encouraging mutual respect (or at least good manners in the lack thereof).

It would just be nice to wander the forums again without having to avoid threads because you know they're just a bunch of conflicted nonsense.
