Pretty Pink Left Hook...rE miXed 12/31

Ho Ho Ho.... a little song i was hoping to arrange in a clever way but alas, one can't make bread from stones. It's a song of no gravity or serious import or even hidden meanings...but it is oh too true. :) Pretty Pink Left Hook http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=826274&songID=11311892 Merry Christmas to y'all and may your deepest wishes be heard from above this new year.

This is another track, like the Bapu track ijust heard that has a great live sound to it. The only crit on the mix is that the bass seems  to boom on the occasional note, but maybe that's my small speakers.

The song is well up to your usual high standard and your vocals sound on fine form.

    Good one Rick.

Not sure if it was your intention, but the Bass is just way too loud and drowns all of the other hard work out.  I've listened on three different sets of speakers and the bass is way too hot on all of them.  I think you can get a lot more punch with the rest of the tune if you can tame it.

Wow!  Nicely done.  Such a sad song.  I think it needs a sax solo in between verses.

I like the song but I think the mix is off. It's like there's too much compression and a low pass filter set to low. Everything sounds like it was recorded to hot as well.

I'll have to check it out on my monitors later. I don't think it's my hd280s though.

    Great song. I like it!

Hey Rick - I like this song or I wouldn't pick on it.

The Bass sounds much better.  It may have even been cut a bit too much in some spots, but it plays much more nicely in the sand box now.

What I'm hearing now is the drummer (particularly the snare) taking out the lead vocals.  It could be that they are too loud or it might be that they need to be paned somewhere other than the vocals.  Someone who knows more than I do (like everyone else on this board) might make a recommendation here, but it seems to me that the drums (particularly the snare) are keeping the vocals from coming out good.

I just discovered a fact probably super obvious to y'all....adding comp and or limiting at master is not a good idea. I've been doing it for months...i tried to just use my basic mix with a smidge of verb and soft limiting. The difference is much more clarity, freshness and energy although there is less polish.

Grant...............Hello, Thanks for the listen...I'm glad you came by.

Phil................I know good cans make a huge difference. Mine are not so hot. I'm always researching. what do you use? Thank you for the listen!

Vicente.............I would add a sax solo in between but it's not a real sax and i like to keep the virtual instruments to the bare minimum. Thank you for stopping by to listen!

Robby..............Merry Christmas to you and i'm making a note to steer clear of the angry swede. I remixed again...completely. Check out please. :)

Beagle..............Thank you Mr.Beag for popping in this busy holiday season. Merry Christmas.

Ed..................Glad you made it by for a listen! You're too kind to say such balderdash but it made my day anyway. Thank you!

Guitarpima............I did a remix and tried to fix the bass with less saturation and more simplicity. It may be too loud but I'll watch for comments...Thank you for the listen and help!

Frank...............Ho Ho Ho to you and a Merry one going your way. Thanks for the listen!

Matt.................I remixed...brought bass and kick down (may still be too loud but i think it was because of a saturation plug in i abused. Thank you for the listen and kind comments.

Glen...............Your notes are a huge help. I carved some space in the vocal range from the snare...moved it left a bit and removed lots of saturation and compression from mix. I appreciate your input. Thank you very much!

The last remix (12/26 PM) has me "Seein' Stars an Spinnin' - BAAk Words."  This sounds just so much better to me.  What ever you did with cleaning up the compression and everything else - WOW.  The vocals sound SO much better without the drums covering them up.

So at about 1:08 and again around 1:38 I can just kinda hear a little Sax in the back (or is by brain imagining things)?  Might want to boost that a little to go along with the real cool piano that stands out so much better now.  I can just hear so much more of it now.

Another cool song from you.  :)  For some reason it's hard to pick out the words (to me anyway)...granted, I'm listening on less-than-stellar speakers.  But somehow I'd like to hear things spread out a bit more.  I was straining to hear that cool piano and even your vocals sometimes.  But don't ask me how to fix it.  :(

    Really like the song.  :)

I agree with some of the comments regarding the mix, but this is a fun song with a cool vibe. It could be mastered a bit louder, but don't destroy the dynamics which are OK. More, please.

    Jeez..  Back again..

So rick, how many tracks do you have the background vocals on?  Is it just one or do you have a couple?  The reason I'm asking is that I think you might want to spread out the background vocals, or consider moving them further from the center.  It seems like they are covering up the main vocal, but they shouldn't be at the volume they are at.

Did you bring up the Sax or is it just that I was listening louder?

Hi Glen...........I did boost the sax part and i now spread the BGV (4 tracks) out a bit and added a smidge compression to piano. I think you are right on as it sounds much better to me. Thank you for these great tips.

Janet............hopefully the piano is more audible..i may still have to boost a bit. thanks very much for the listen and comments.

Lynn.............I did (just now) master it a bit louder and with a little more verve. Thank you for the ears and helpful notes.

The king of quirk:) Love this rick. Mostly the lyric and concept. brilliant (whatever it is you're singing about).
I think you should try an experiment. ie: mute all the drums and instead lay down about 15 tracks of foot stomps, clapping, banging on trash cans and pots and pans and cardboard boxes and plywood and whatever else suits your fancy. just a thought..

Lightly intoxicating stuff ... like champaign dreams or such.

I was lost in the poetry but found in the vibe.

The layered vocs amaze me ... my ears listened deeply and extended widely to grasp them.

Of course your instrument selection was sweet, but I would have loved more of those bass saxes (near the outro)

    Rick,

On the lead vocals - Assuming that you have a parametric EQ,  you should listen to what a 3dB drop (-3dB) at around 2Khz with a Q of about 3 does to make it sound more natural.  Now that things are spaced out (a lot better) you might want to start giving things a bit more volume across the board.  It has space now for the bass to come back up.

Man I love that chorus! Just great. I doubt this far into this you are going to make major changes,  but I couldn't help thinking that a little less going on during the early verses would really make the choruses "pop" even more. Just a suggestion there Rick.

A method I've learned in mixing. Don't mix until everything is tracked, then start with drums and bass. Once those are playing nicely together, the vocals come next. If those 3 elements aren't working together first, adding other parts is only going to make it worse. Mixing this way makes panning decisions much more obvious.

And I never mix with headphones. Tried it a couple of times, and the problem I had was I had gotten used to hearing it that way, so when I started to mix the song in the monitors it sounded wrong. A bad mind game to say the least.

Sorry for the dissertation Rick. More for others now that you've learned the lesson. :)

Love this Rick, that's a great chorus. One of your catchiest tunes I think, but still enough quirkyness to make me smile. I like that cello a lot, but I might pull it back a bit under the vocals. Piano is sublime.

Tim...............i do like your experiment idea.  I'm too used to the drums in this but will use your idea soon enough.  I think you've found the way into my madhouse. :)  Thank you for the listen!

    Philip.............thanks for the listen!

Glen................i put a dip just as you suggested on the lead vocal.  I brought the bass up a smidge, and brought the piano up and down as Randy suggested to heighten the chorus 'pop'.   To my ears these suggestions were HUGE in making things work better.  Thank you for your helping with this.  It's made a LARGE difference (as you can hear).  :)

James..............Yeah, i tried rewriting the lyric but nothing passed the board of directors so i kept it and instead focused on mixing it better.  Thank you for the listen.

Randy................I'm never too far into a mix unless you're talking about laying down tracks...my situation here is absurd for recording...but YOUR suggestions didn't require re-tracking just envelopes.  I did as you wisely suggested (brought down one piano during verses and raised it for chorus) and WOW...big difference in the dynamic from verse to chorus.  Thank you for the right-on help.  Much appreciated!

jamesG...............I brought down the sax (not cello....i guess i didn't fool you???) LOL....It does sound much better having it sneak up this way.  Thank you for the ears and notes!
