It does include Boost 11. I'm not saying it is good, but it is a limiter.

I think the Sonitus multi-band can be used in this fashion too, and would probably sound a lot cleaner.

But I get it - there is no dedicated master bus limiter for the PC.   As much as I like the CL and have used it many, many times, it's always on a per-track basis as was intended.  It works very well for that.

Can anyone explain the difference between these packs and what is already included in Sonar X2 Producer? Seem the same sorts of tools are already in it.

What are the REAL (not perceived) benefits of buying this pack? It gets so confusing having so many different things that all do essentially the same job...

Thanks

PS: not trying to be obtuse, or be argumentative I genuinely would like opinions before I jump in and buy...

I was responding to Paul's complaint that there was no brickwall limiter included in X2, by pointing out that there was one - Boost 11.  I don't use it, but it's there.

I use the Concrete Limiter, on a per-track basis, and also on the master bus.

Are you saying the Concrete Limiter was not intended to be used on the master?

Correct.   I don't recall exactly who stated it or when, but I definitely remember reading that the CL was better suited to track-level limiting vs. the master bus.  That's one of the reasons it was designed with such low latency - multiple instances could be used.

I just read the official blurb and it states "...is suitable for peak limiting of individual tracks and level maximization of mix buses".   So perhaps I'm a little off on this, but even here individual tracks are listed first, which isn't something you'd normally see when reading about a software limiter.

I took it to mean they were pushing its USP first - that its low latency meant you could use it on tracks, as well as the mix bus.

What do I know, though - marketing..

TS

[We aren't ignoring you. We don't comment on or speculate on future product development for business reasons (most other companies do the same). I hope you understand.
[Andrew Rossa, CW]

Thanks you very much for your reply, Andrew.

In fact, i was not talking about product development, but about issues and bugs to fix (if any, of course).
This is a little strange for a company not to respond to this aspect, whatever its field of activity, and it can be a little discouraging for some customers (or they are wrong about the existence or the importance of the issues they evoke - but in this case you need to tell them, am i right ?).

Anyway, i'll remain faithful and confident (in Nice, summer is coming, and the sea warms )...

+1. Some of us don't care to know about new features just yet. My case, is exactly so. I'm strongly with TS here. We know that it's not good to divulge too much information regarding what Cakewalk is doing, but here's the way I see it:

If Cakewalk will address bugs/issues in the forum, then we can all at least see that CW has acknowledged, not that there is a problem, but so that the user reporting can stop reporting it. I run into bugs all the time, but I don't have much incentive to report them all. The bug-reporting tool is cumbersome, and I get the impression they aren't taken seriously unless there's uber-detail. Many of the bugs I would report are simply by clicking something. Very random.

What would have been useful is if I could take a snapshot of my Sonar X2a condition at the moment I encounter a bug, record movements, and have those logged. Like a screencast with logging. CW could see what I'm actually attempting to do, and then view the timestamped logs to see what Sonar thinks I'm doing, or what is causing it to not correctly do what I'm doing. Unfortunately, I don't think that's a service or function, so the forum is all that's left.

Call-in Support did not impress me. I'm sorry.

While waiting for a reply, searching the forum (with Google or course) might provide you with the info you seek. There are plenty of posts about the PC modules, here are a couple of them:

I already tried the searching but nothing specifically related to the real world differences that I am asking about...

TBH as a user ( I am assuming) I would have thought it just as easy to post a brief opinion instead of spending time finding threads...

Anyhoo thanks for those links, they DID not come up in my search here on the forum, I got everything but...

Yep as I thought, nothing in those threads to answer the question "what can this pack do that is not already IN X2"

So still no real answer, but thanks for the effort.

So I guess with all the tools already in Sonar that apparently do the same job as these (no one has posted anything to say different), I can save my money :)

To be honest joden, it's kind of a case where if you have to ask that question in the first place, you probably won't have much need just yet. As for differences...

Boost vs concrete - boost doesn't sound very good. You can limit softly and it might sound clean, but try to go medium or heavy limiting and it just sounds pumpy and distorted. Concrete limiter just limits without these bad artifacts unless you push it much harder. It will limit your audio much more than you can with boost.

PC2A is just a different sounding compressor. It's very smooth and reacts differently to different material sources in a nice way. It's based of the LA2A. Look it up for an idea of what sound it gives. If you don't have a good grasp on compressors, it probably won't be a lot of use to you, though it is very easy to use, so in that case could be better for a beginner.

You get the idea about the other two. Like the PC2A, they just give a different sound for the more experienced engineer to work with.

If you would take the time to read about them and view the vids you would know what they offer. There is a demo too of the Ca 2a.

They are modeled after consoles that a lot of people like. The leveling compressor is unique and is modeled after a optical type compressor.

Plus they are meant for the PC as modules.  This means they are also good to be placed on all tracks and buses.

I gave you a quick run down on and although it is correct it does do any of them justice or go in to detail.

I have them all and I like them.

Thanks John and Matt -

That is the sort of info I was after...I am on a very tight budget (like most of us I guess) so I really wanted to gauge peeps opinions on the gear first.

I have a basic grasp of what this stuff does, and tbh I thought a compressor is a compressor is a compressor...but clearly not..

So in effect you are saying I can do all the stuff using built-ins if I choose and they would be okay, but these will do the job better and give a more "polished" result....yes?

If it is a budget issue, learn the plugins you have. You can go far with the plugins included in SONAR. There are a lot to learn. The Sonitus plugins cover a lot of territory. Also working a while with what you have might give you a better idea of what you may want supplement. Many third party plugins (and some CW plugs too) have demos so that you can evaluate how they impact your workflow. Additional plugins may add color or help you achieve results faster. That is about it.

Just to add -  I do sometimes like to grab specials and put them aside for the day that I can use them effectively, because when that day comes and I don't have it, I probably won't be able to afford it :)

'Better' is purely subjective. They'll give a 'different' result and wether or not that is perceived as better depends on your skills implementing and choosing most appropriately. It's just another tool. Don't bother spending the money unless you know what you want out of it and what it's going to achive. You've clearly still got plenty of learning to do. When the time is right, you'll know when to reach for them. Ask questions, but until you understand it and don't really need to ask 'wether you need them or not', you probably don't need them.

Compressors are like pairs of shoes...... why would you possibly want more than one ( pair)?

With shoes some are better in the rain, some when the sun is shining, and some when it's cold. There's always a pair that you prefer and wear more than the others.

With compressors some are better on different instruments or types of audio. Some are better at clamping down on peaks quicker than others, some impart a "sound" or their character on the audio, others don't. Just like shoes most people have a compressor that they use more than the others if for no other reason than it feels comfortable - just like shoes.

So there you go... think shoes.

On a slightly more serious note mattplaysguitar advice is good. I think the pack is well worth the money but if you haven't got that sort of spare cash and aren't sure whether you need them it might be better to wait. Usually an offer will eventually come around again and even if it doesn't you can still buy them as individuals as and when you need them.

That's my tuppence worth....now where did I put my shoes?

I would downgrade to Sonar Studio if I could still retain the FX bin that PC has. I don't like how PC sits in the DAW.

Got the bundle haf year ago, but would not do it again (big Cakewalk fan though).
Concrete Limiter, in my opinion, really sucks life out anything with tempo drums.
Even used just as a -0.1 limiter without boosting, to my ears it sucks life out of the beat.

Also on my computer, I noticed  Boost 11 used only as a limiter can cause same problem.
When multiple plugins on a bus, or more Boost 11 in project, it kills a lot of peaks.
But just using 1 Boost 11 as peak limiter is fine, best check the led peak indicators at 12db-scale to be sure.
If the movement of leds really reduces/flattens when you swich on Boost 11, I guess there's a problem.

The bundle pack in my opinion is ok, but not really a must have specially if you've got other stuff on your wishlist.

just dropping my opinion

I don't like that you have to click a tiny button or hit a keystroke to see it, and that it shows to the right of the existing track. I'm not certain how else this could be better done, but I would prefer a larger FX bin and no PC. I think PC looks "cool", but isn't useful for me (more cumbersome, actually), and when trying to close one or two of them, can quickly confuse my eyes on which track I'm looking at (especially when the number of tracks (Narrowed) goes off to the right of the screen.
Bottom line for me is, I think PC was a neat thing, but I've grown to hate it.
