In addition to yourself, of course, are we going to see new articles from other writers from that era?

URock - yes, at the very least, Bill Park will be continuing, and I suspect we'll be hearing from Bruce Richardson. We also have a few new writers in the wings.

Welcome back Rip! I look back fondly to the old "Roll Your Own" PC articles - they walked me through building my first PC's and taught me a great deal. I also recall the domain name thing. I had to do a similar "fraud" thing to reclaim a domain registration back in those days. Funny how it was actually easier to create a bunch of phony documentation than to actually get a human to just realize you were an honest business just trying to fix their mistake!

Now here's something ironic... I went to your link and guess who the first company listed within the "Ads by Google" column at the right? None other than Network Solutions!

I look forward to visiting ProRec again. Good luck!

I'm glad to see your site back up, and I am sorry for your troubles. It does all tend come at once, doesn't it?

Anyway, I am just curious. You have an article with a distinctly Mac-centric point on your site. But you multi-track with Sonar. Does that mean you run it on Macs?

Just wondering...

Doc_Drop,

I assume you mean this article. I do not think it's Mac-centric at all. The fact that Mac is dominant across the larger studios is.. just a fact, that's all. And there's reasons for that, which I go into in the article. It's just history.

I've owned four Macs and over a dozen PCs. I switched to PC for my audio work in 1994 and never looked back. I have used Sonar, Vegas, and ProTools PC for tracking, and since around 2000-2001, Sonar has been pretty much my exclusive DAW. I've used Cakewalk products since Greg Hendershott was the only employee

Usually I'm criticized as being far too PC-biased. ProRec is pretty much 100% PC-DAW information. But, Macs are still an inevitability if you do business with larger studios. Thus the article.

Since posting that article a lot of people have contacted me to let me know that they had similar experiences and also had to "defraud" NetSol to get their domains back. It's amazing that there hasn't been a class-action lawsuit against them yet. I've thought about starting one. Something should be done about them. They are a juggernaut.

I guess it's GoogleAdSenseOfHumor. I wish there was some way to block that ad.

Rip,

O.K. I guess I had a case of Mac envy or something reading the article. I apologize if I misinterpreted.

I have also spent my career, as an architect, on Macs and PC's. I do still hear graphic people saying Photoshop runs better on a Mac. I think the Mac mentality in music and graphics is based on 15 year old situations. Since I have always been "budget challenged" my own computers have always been PC's. But if someone buys me a fully loaded Mac, I am not going to put it down.

Anyway, you obviously know what you are talking about, so I will hush up...

I'm glad to see your site is back. Do you still have that tutorial series where you followed an entire session from start to finish? I think it was the one where you used many of the Waves plugins. I really enjoyed that and I was recommending that a friend of mine read it, but I couldn't find it.

Balderdash! You're back!

I just found and read your Balderdash! article. An oldy but goody. I can't believe that article is over 7 years old. I remember the 1st time I read it. I can't wait for new articles and reviews. Hopefully there will be a new "Roll Your Own" b/c I need to build a new DAW.

Hey Rip,
I'm looking for an article that I think you wrote about compression and dynamics and you talked about different ways of using the attack and release. You compared Greenday and the beatles. I can't remember the name of the article and can't find it on ProRec. Do you still have it?

Thanks,
Lou

Yep, there will be a new RYOQC (Roll Your Own Quad Core) coming up in about a month.

The article was called "Squish This!" and is currently missing... it didn't make the conversion to the new site. It'll be up in a day or two. I'll let you know when it's up.

There were a couple, but at the moment, the internal links are all broken, so it's impossible to navigate the whole article. I'm actually in the process of getting the links reworked today, and when it's back together, I'll let you know.

Thanks a million! This was one of the best articles. It really improved my mixes. It's great having ProRec back and being able to read all the old articles and getting back to my roots.

Thanks again!

Welcome Back Rip!

Whatever happened to Pete 'roll yer own' Lioni? He didn't have too many hurricanes did he?
