Oh, the properties on both the DL'd file and the CD are the same.

Why do I need a new CD when I have the disk I bought from Acronis?

OK, I did that.  The instructions aren't exactly up-to-date, but luckily I clicked on something and it was the right thing to do.

Now my CD says exactly the same thing as the last 4-5 did.

I'm not going to mess with the BIOS to try to boot with it, though.  (last time I tried that it wouldn't boot at all.  I'll ask my son to help me when he can.)  Things are running too well now to screw them up.

Thanks for your help!

Not sure what the question is. What is the version number of your Acronis product? Older versions are not Win7 compatible for all operations. There is a change in the way Windows 7 formats NTFS compared to previous versions, and that may be an issue.

The tech support guy wants to know exactly what you are using, so he sent you a known file. He knows what that newly burned CD will do. If the Acronis disk you bought is a bootable CD i. e. it will start your computer from cold-off even if all your hard drives are unplugged, then you might be able to use it. But cloning disks that the operating system is using is a problem like changing the tire of your car while you are driving on the freeway. Cloning is possible from a running OS in later versions of windows using kludges like "shadow copy" but if you really want to eliminate problems, it is best to be sure that none of the drives being cloned is being accessed by the OS that is stored on them. A boot CD loads its own operating system and runs from memory so the hard drives are now completely disconnected logically from the OS that is written on them. The OS in memory only accesses to read from one drive and write to another and no other changes are being made during the operation.

NoKey, I checked last night and the original disk is partitioned, but the two new ones aren't, so that really doesn't make any sense.  :(

You read all that thread, Kalle?  Thank you.  Yeah, I know it should work.  These types of things are rather par for the course for me.  Unfortunately, my son's getting tired of fixing things for me.  He said yesterday, 'Quit trying to be so young, mom!'  (i.e., getting new software, etc.)  lol

J,

With the target disk connected as a slave, what size of it does Windows report?

Maybe the disk is partitioned and one of the partitions is not formated, or somehow no visible to windows.

I believe that's possible.

Okay...Janet since you are having sooo much trouble with Acronis.....I am gonna suggest a different backup program that I use all the time at work and it's totally free:
http://www.clonezilla.org/download/sourceforge/stable/iso-zip-files.php

it's kind of a windows 3.1 GUI look once you get into it, and it will copy the entire HD NO MATTER WHAT PARTITIONS YOU HAVE or you can even select the partitons and clone them....
the only freaking gripe I have about this program is that it won't dynamically fill up or stretch an image to a bigger hard drive or if you copy a big hard drive and try to clone it back down to a smaller hard drive, wont' go.....
but it works like a charm..

Thank you!

I glanced at the site and it's looks a little complicated to get everything set up, but I'll look again later when I'm not so tired.

Einstein, first of all, I see now that you DID say .org.  Sorry about that.

OK, I've downloaded it and burned it to a CD.  Do I have to boot my computer from that disk?  I'm not seeing instructions on their website yet.

I clicked on something different this time and it's finally doing something.

It will probably blow up my computer or something, but we'll see!

Sorry about that..yes, one has to boot off of the cd and go through the prompts, which is just a lot of hitting enter...:)

P.S. man I wish we had transporter technology to where one can beam to someone's house and fix their computer issues, etc and then be right back at home for supper:)

I would pay money for software that would do that!

I've got a friend that has been gone for the summer and is now back.  He's spent lots of time fixing my poor computer woes. He said he'll come by in a couple of days and see if he can sort it out.

Well, my friend, the techy, came by today and got it working.  It was complicated, but he got around it.  I'm sure most of you would have been able to do it too. Thanks for your help.  Now I can start filling up those 2 new 1.5 Tb HD's.  :-)

Hi Janet,
I use Clonezilla as well since I have 4 partitions on my computer. I dual boot with XP and linux.  Clonezilla backs up and restores all of the partitions to my external USB drive. It is a bit involved, but well worth the investment for some of us. I am glad you finally got your stuff working.

Actually, I downloaded that 2 days ago and was going to try this if Acronis wouldn't work.  But this guy is going to be here for another 9 months at least, so I think I'll be good for awhile. lol

Or not. I just found out he totally erased my original HD.  And I didn't backup last night's studio work I guess.  And I was going to use it for my libraries.  Oh my...

So now I am confused. Is your problem with Acronis solved ?

Yes, that's solved.  But I had planned to leave my libraries on my original HD and use it as a backup.  It's only 7 months old.  Also, I hadn't backed up the project I was working on last night like I always do.  So...there's 2 hours worth of work.

AND reinstalling all those libraries.  :(

Re:Problems with Acronis 2010/08/18 11:44:01 (permalink)
I guess it's a bit complicated to explain, but I found the project I thought he'd erased.  It was on the 2nd HD he'd cloned.  He unplugged it, so I couldn't see it at first.  Now he's using that one to re-clone my old HD, then I can simply uninstall anything on it I don't want.

So, things look a bit brighter than they did last night.  :-)
