Prochannel development ... still happening? [now with FREE FX chain!]

Just wondered what happened to new Prochannel module development. Nothing has come out for a very long time. Has development ceased?

We've had the tape sim and the Overloud VKFX modules in the last year or so.

I agree it's a pity more third parties haven't adopted it (just overloud and cakewalk). Having said that I like VST3.

Yes, you knew about it even if you didn't know about it because the big knob saturation module is from Softube.

$329 for the softtube mix bundle. A trifle expensive I would say.

That is expensive. I got it for $159 or $179 on Cakewalk's site when Softube first released it. I wouldn't give $329 for it though.

My view for bundled stuff included with X4 or X5 is this.

Dump 32 bit Sonar. It's over.

Do not supply any plugins with Sonar except 64 bit VST's and Pro Channel modules (keep backward compatibility support though for legacy plugins for people who need them). Oh and keep the MIDI plugins as well.

Distribute all available Cakewalk Pro channel modules with X4 Pro (which are currently available in the store). Include VST3 versions of the plugins as well inc Pro Channel plugins bundled in X3 like Quadcurve. This will make people who have previously bought PC modules feel a little happier.

Bundle Sonitus plugs as VST3 (yup unlikely that will happen).

Job done.

The Softube bundle is quite nice, esp. if you get it for $179 or so.  The standout was the TSAR reverb - before Breverb Sonar was missing a high-end algorithmic reverb.  Still, the EQs are nice and the focusing EQ is really standout for those tracks you want to, well, standout.  Having Breverb just makes the bundle a little less cost-effective.

One of my favorite ProChannel features is using Quick Grouping in the Console view to open up all of them at once..makes it easy to verify console emulations status, for example.

I look forward to any new full PC implementations.

But ... something lost on me initially ... (maybe obvious to many(?)) ...

Do people recognise/use the FX Chain Module? It effectively wraps an FX Bin into the PC strip so you can still launch/use all your non-PC FX from there. You can even simply drag-drop FX from your Browser onto the PC strip and it'll create a FX Chain Module wrapper. It also provides for 6 control knobs and 6 buttons (as assignable) for tweaks directly from the PC strip (many of which are preconfigured for the 'included' FX).

@ShellstaX - The FX  Chain Module has almost completely replaced the FX bin for me.  It adds so much more functionality (if that's a real word) to the signal chain in Sonar.

I can now create PC modules that I want.  With the bundled Nomad FX, I now have a Pulteq EQ and a Fairchild compressor in the ProChannel.  It also works as a great "gain stage".

I would be interested to hear back from "burkek" with his thoughts on the posts in this thread.

Nice one @jb101 ... exactly, ... so people needn't think they are constrained to just full implementations of ProChannel FX to use the strips workflow.

Another +1 for FX Chains in the PC strip - I don't think I've had a project without them since they were introduced.  And on occasion I also use them without any FX just for gain staging between modules.

I've recently been using ProChannel more and have been experimenting with the FX Chain. I like the concept and using the Controls can be a time saver during mixing. I am curious if running VSTs in the FX Chain is more/less expensive (CPU-wise) than just plugging VSTs into the FX bin.

I don't have any technical data to back it up, but I can't say I've noticed any difference whatsoever in real-world resource usage.

Oh.... And I'm running X3 on a Q9300 w/ 8GB RAM, so definitely not a high-end machine either.

heres some wishful thinking: id like to see a parallel effects bin for the Pro Channel

this would split the signal in two to allow parallel processing within the bin. so for example you could leave one half dry and add a distortion to the other side, followed by a 100 wet reverb followed by an eq for example. I know this is why busses exist, but making the PC more flexible and modular would be fantastic.

an example of this kind of effects routing currently available in sonar is with TH2's Splitter (ignoring the frequency element):

back onto the original topic: yes its been too long since any new PC plugins have been released. I want simple stereo control:

Tracktion did that better than anyone...would love to see Sonar adopt a similar approach, although I imagine that sort of thing is buried pretty deep in the code. Maybe creating an FX Chain with parallel routing would be easier than overhauling the FX bin...I don't know, I'm not a coder.

 I want simple stereo control:

Doesn't Channel Tools do that? It can place the right or left channel anywhere in the stereo field, and what's even better is that you can set set the width...for example, one channel could spread from center to left, while the other is panned full right.

BIAS had a plug-in called VBox that was an effects matrix you could insert as a plug-in. It was brilliant...too bad it's no longer available. Hey! Maybe Cakewalk could buy the IP...hmmm...then again it hasn't been updated in a zillion years. It might not even work any more.
