Let's take the example from the Dark Ages.  The majority of the people living at the time either believed, or were told to believe, that the world was flat despite multiple ways known thousands of years previously to the contrary.  It would be very easy to assume that anyone who thought it was round could be chastised as a bigot per the definition of the word...

The point here is that, in this case, it's actually the majority that were prejudiced and closed-minded, plus there was extreme intolerance and hostility (having a "the Earth is round" view could get you imprisoned, exiled or killed).  The prime backers of the flat Earth idea were the Church (which brings in the religious element) and it definitely caused separation in social groups (albeit without any racial implications that I know of).  In this particular example, the minority opinion turned out to be the correct one.

Actually, no again. Since Pythagoras (Greek, 6th century B.C.), the idea of a spherical earth grew increasingly widespread. While some individuals in the Roman Catholic Church (most notably apparently St. Augustine, though this is somewhat debated), did repudiate the idea, largely among those who thought the concept through, the idea was accepted. (If you know of a given instance of an individual getting persecuted, please do share it; I can't find one instance. BTW, do not please think me as trying to put you "on the spot", I'd genuinely be interested). In essence, what you've probably been taught regarding Columbus attempting to disprove the flat earth theory is largely fabricated. Columbus and Isabella's cartographers were arguing about the size of the earth in her court, not its shape. Everyone in the room at that time believed the earth to be spherical.

My guess is that you are confusing this issue with the spread of heliocentrism. Copernicus, of course, authored this and it was this idea that was embraced and publicized by the devout Roman Catholic Galileo Galiliei. Interestingly, Pope Urban VIII might have defended the ideas of Galileo (Pope Gregory XIII had embraced Copernicus' ideas earlier in 1582), had he not been insulted by the way Galileo posited his theories in his book, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. Timing was also against Galileo; his problems began around 1615 and by the time many of his ideas were analyzed, he faced the problem of being charged with ideas that seemed suspiciously supportive of some of the paradigms of the Protestant Reformation. This last is stranger still as Luther (and the other magisterial Reformer John Calvin after him) had apparently little use for the heliocentric idea.

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

In reality, what actually happens is that they are corrected by their peers. And if you think spelling and grammar nazis are bad, try oversimplifying something in a technical arena sometime.

Yes. That makes much more sense.

Absolutely no subset of demographics of any kind isn't without a whole buttload of stupid people who think they are absolutely right. Those are the one's the smarter ones manipulate to get what they want by mobilizing them.

That's never going to change.

What's important is that the "smarter" ones have the compassion and skills to a) genuinely attempt to make their flock's lives better (preferably through sheer altruism but personal reward is not necessarily a bad motivator as long as the results are good) and b) are actually able to ACCOMPLISH the things that need to be done to make their flock's lives better.

b) is where things can get very complicated...

No, abstraction doesn't equal complexity in a quid pro quo sense, but neither does abstraction eschew complexity when the issue demands it.

Saying that it takes a genius to make "something" simple is far different than saying that a genius can make "anything at all" simple. I did not hire my landscaper to perform my heart transplant. I hired a brilliant heart surgeon with experience. Neither did I ask her to explain every step of the procedure as she performed it. I ascertained beforehand to the best of my satisfaction that she was capable, let her put me under, and woke several hours later with a new heart. That was seven years ago this coming Thanksgiving.

I guess she was "okay."

BTW, Goebbels may have been right when he suggested that if one repeats a fallacy enough, people will believe it, but I certainly hope that's not the case.

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.
