Public policy vs. Politics
A recent thread - in which I thought an entirely civil, and IMO also friendly exchange of ideas - was locked recently. Personally, I make a distinction between "politics" which is indeed toxic (and i agree needs to be banned) and "public policy" which is only vaguely related. I would apologize to any who disagree on this characterization, but I like to believe people can have productive, non-toxic, respectful discussions on public policy. Yes, even where we disagree on things. I also believe that the problem with problem with politics is that the exact sort of difficult questions we were discussing are ignored in place of superficial vitriol. You are of course welcome to differ.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Well, at least in the US *the law* is inextricably woven into the fabric of poly ticks. So when discussing legal concepts sometimes it overlaps. I feel the monitors can run the forum any way they wish. :D:D

+1 Drew I agree. That thread was locked because a few had complained.......apparently a civil discussion is not everyone's cup of tea.

No doubt. I regret coming back to this forum thinking I would enjoy conversing with musicians. Easy fix.

The distinction between politics and public policy is a distinction without a difference. Most of us could get just as angry about an abstract discussion regarding a policy, as about supporting a particular party or person who espouses that polity. To the extent that a political choice is anything other than a personality cult or beauty contest, and I think for most of us it is, then the heart of politics is policy. It is not the politician who is the devil or a saint, it is the fiendish or godly beliefs he (or she) promulgates and threatens or promises to make us accept. There are other places to fight about policy.

No politics, no religion, enjoy! 'Tis the mantra I like to follow. (And, no, I'm not one of the complainers - ever. I just know that there are many layers to the onion of reality and neither politics nor religion are at the top so arguing about either is pointless. )

politics and public policy are always going to be joined at the hip, because of the impact that the supreme court has, setting 'public policy', and how all businesses (even this forum) fall under those rules and guidelines without input...... and how the supreme court is a purely political tool, due to the way appointments are made.

Since you addressed me in that; I said the truth; A civil conversation was going on and was locked because of a complaint. - the truth. Now if I missed somebody fighting over something...excuse me. A video about kids toys that looks like dicks hasn't been. - the truth. I compare. You don't. We're squared away as I see it. - and sorry Reece...I was talking to Drew when I pointed that out but if you think it's a bad comparison that's Ok by me. I'm sure many here compare differently. I thought I should add; I didn't complain about the thread being locked. (you were very nice about it Reece I just mentioned to Drew why I didn't understand it being locked.) I didn't complain about Beeps picture. ( I did enjoy it) I didn't complain about the dicks video. ( thought it was weird and found humor in the little time I watched) I guess I don't understand reasoning behind the complaints and locking. But it's Ok. Lot of things I don't understand.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts. My point here was twofold: To explain that I make a distinction between the two things. I thought it was a productive civil discussion regarding public policy with perhaps a few questionable words that didn't really go anywhere. Obviously there is a fine line here and others might disagree. To apologize to anyone who does not make the same distinction I do and who felt we were thus violating the TOS. I also appreciate Beagle's (and the other mods') work in navigating these kinds of things.
