Quick update:

I'm now using the QX6700 instead of the 5600+ and so far, no pops and clicks on a basic song, memory ticking over at 1.6G, between 10/20% CPU usage.

I've overclocked it by 2 steps to 3.2 GHz and everything is running surprisingly cool.

A story with a happy ending!

QX6700, 4G RAM, DELTA 192, Samplitude 11 Pro, Win 7 32bit.
