1) D
2) A
3) D
4) Use near the end of project work to final check bus volumes

"Edited spelling"
New Tag line so I won't have to keep typing this. I may or may not have edited this yet, but I probably need to.

I copied/pasted this from an earlier in this thread) post because it fit.

1. Do you use the waveform preview feature?
C. I use this feature often

2. Do you use this on buses or instrument tracks?
A. Bus waveform preview
B. Instrument track waveform preview
Mainly (B) occasionally (A)

I use it, but for me there is an issue with it. It is too inaccurate and every time it is drawn a bit different. It makes 80% of tasks where it is needed impossible to do (in my case). I hope new track-to-track routing will allow record actual waves with the same easiness, and it will have 100% accuracy. For me it will be more useful than current clumsy drawings.
1. D
2. A,B
3. A
4. I need it when I want to know if sounds are starting simultaneously, and if sounds are similar, but it doesn't work because of what I've described above. So usually I use it just for rough information about sound.

4. When do you use this feature in your production?
I use this feature throughout my entire workflow.  I use this feature when tracking individual tracks to ensure I'm getting a solid signal.  I use this feature on the master bus when tracking while capturing multiple simultaneous inputs to ensure my tracking isn't too hot.  I use this feather once the tracking is completed during the "rough mix".  I use it repeatedly during the mixing of my stems.  Finally, I use it once I have finished all the mixing to get an idea of where the "hot" spots might be in my final mix.  The "peak markers" are invaluable to me also.

This feature is VERY VALUABLE

Mixing and mastering both

Please fix the legends for the waveform preview. They currently do not align. The '0' legend is never aligned with the wavefrom preview baseline. It gets worse when the track is zoomed.
I had a request ticket for this but it disappeared.
It would also be nice for the automation track legends to be 0-9 or 0%-100%. This would help drawing or editing automation by hand. (I don't remember what automation legends are now since I find the general mis-alignment annoying and disable them and I am not in the studio now to look).

@BRuys: Yesyes, I got it, I got it.
Its the button with the waveform on it. And the markers in the menu.
Been there since Sonar 8. I just use them when I need them.
I never knew their technical name nor that they're unique.

To see the cumulative effect of effects and bus sums. To look for peaks that may need to be reduced. For setting up precise bus automation. Probably more I can't think of at the moment.

While we're on the subject... I wish there was a feature in Sonar that would quickly run through waveform preview and track waveforms, at possibly selectable different points within the processing (before, after, between?), at high speed, and would flag a selectable number of peak points (like 5, 10, 20, etc.), in descending order, to use for quickly and precisely spotting peak problems so they can be taken care of in differing ways, depending on how many peaks are found and their characteristics. If there's just 1 or two, I might want to deal with them by manually setting up automation. A few more, I might want to use a little more compression, or a limiter or clipper, depending on characteristics of the track. And if a large number of peaks are found, I might want to go back through the signal chain and find the specific source of the problem, or where I might want to deal with the problem and its cause. All without having to play thru the track multiple times to find them.

1. Do you use the waveform preview feature?
A. Wasn't aware of this feature
B. Aware of it but never use it
C. I use this feature often
D. I use it occasionally

C. I always use this at least on the master bus.

2. Do you use this on buses or instrument tracks?
A. Bus waveform preview
B. Instrument track waveform preview

Mostly buses, so A.

3. Waveform preview allows you to display historical peak markers on the timeline. Do you use this feature?
A. Wasn't aware of this feature
B. Aware of it but never use it
C. I use this feature often
D. I use it occasionally

I used to need this a lot and used it then to detect peaks, but these days, between bus gain nobs and concrete limiter, I don't go red.

I do need the ability to detect heat in the pro channel. Clip hold at the very least. Fast bounce clip detect preferred. Take me to clips after detecting.

4. When do you use this feature in your production?
When needed.

Once on, I only turn it off when it is in the way of reading envelopes.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I use it for a few things... I look to check dynamics and determine limiter/compressor needs/uses as well as overall volume of these teacks and busses during mix...

Thanks! This is a very handy feature!

I once tried to use the waveform preview to check a timing issue but it was nowhere near accurate enough to use for that purpose. It's still very useful though. But you are right, it would be even more useful if it were more accurate.

When mastering within SONAR and you want to at least win a skirmish in the loudness wars and match average levels among files, this is invaluable. Seeing the waveform visuals, and setting the master bus meter to a +12 dB range, make it possible to match levels visually to cuts recorded previously. Most of the time you'll be in the ballpark without having to spent a lot of time A-Bing.

Craig, I'm interested that you judge loudness by ear rather than measure it over time with an EBU meter (this is what I do).

As I mix, I keep an EBU meter on the master bus and I increase and reduce compression to keep limiting to a minimum, ensuring at least a touch of limiting occurs. It helps me set compression in context of available headroom.

I use it on both at all times. This answer wasn't there, so I hope by me adding it that I'm not messing anything up.

4. When do you use this feature in your production?

Buses, instrument tracks and on my master bus to see how my wave forms are looking. The greatest thing for me with this feature is how it allows me to see virtual instrument wave forms without having to turn things into physical wave forms. To me this is one of the coolest tools in Sonar. Please never remove it....unless of course something in it is messing things up. I'd really miss it though.

Somewhat tangential to what you are asking but if you were thinking of playing with waveform preview I'd really be interested in seeing Sonar getting FL Studio's feature of scrolling wave preview in mixer view. Have the MIDI tracks scroll their MIDI preview, the instruments/buses scroll the wave preview and it'd make for some nice fullscreen mixing.

SONAR has a unique feature that allows you to view waveform previews in realtime during playback on Instrument tracks and buses. (Not to be confused with waveform preview while recording on audio tracks)
This feature can be useful during mixing or drawing automation. I'm curious how many users take advantage of this feature or what you use it for.

Do you use the waveform preview feature?
Waveform preview allows you to display historical peak markers on the timeline. Do you use this feature?

Wasn't aware of these features. After reading this I thought, "these features sound interesting." So I tried to access them. I tried right-clicking in the track header, FX bin and the clips pane, but none of the context menus offered this in either a buss or an instrument track. I tried all of the above switching between clips and notes view. Tried selecting a clip itself and checked its context menu. I also tried selecting an instrument track and looked in the track view's dedicated View menu. Nothing there either. This is certainly a well-hidden feature. I give up. Where is it and how is it accessed?

OK for busses but it's not available for instrument tracks as far as I can see.
