REMIX, 6-7-12 NEW PUGTONES "OUT OF LOVE"

(6-7-12)  We really appreciate all of the comments.  You guys nailed it!  Mark did the remix so let us know what you think.  I think he addressed everyone's suggestions.  This is a great place.

I finally had to just pull the trigger on this song.  I've waited long enough.  I've waited the last couple years to find just the right singer.  That didn't happen so here I am singing a ballad.  Not my strong suit!

The saving grace here is the wonderful collaborators who helped me with it.  I originally posted 4 tracks a couple summers ago looking for a keyboard player and Gary Dugan said he'd give it a shot.  Well, he's been on several since and we love his tracks and his talent.  Rich Arizmendi said he'd do sax and brothers and sisters, he did a soulful track!  Darren Matthes did drums and of course my partner Mark did lead guitar.  So here it is.  I didn't think we could play this slow.  LOL!  Thanks for taking the time to listen and for any comments!

Personal taste (and blasphemy too) but the bass seems about 1.5db too loud relative to the drums. I'm listening on my Sennheiser HD600s.

    Great sound all around Warren/Mark.

Fantastic song, Warren.  You really delivered the blues on this piece.  All the performances are first rate, and your vocal was sung with passion.  However, I think it would have been more intimate had you not used so much reverb.  It sounds like you're playing in a very large space (think airplane hangar), whereas a smaller room might have been more effective.  Sometimes just putting reverb on one or two elements in a mix will fool the listener into thinking everything has reverb on it (psychoacoustics).  If you tell me you actually recorded this in an airplane hangar, then, nevermind.  No matter, this is very tasty, period.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Nice work guys! Warren, great job on the vox, but it sounds you need to do a low cut on it. The vocals and bass seem to clash at times. You sound like you have Niel Young as a bgv. Love the Sig by the way.

Warren,  Good tune.  My only crit would be the extra reverb on the vocals, but that's largely a matter of taste.  I've been trying to greatly reduce my level of reverb, so it's always on my mind now.  I think less reverb would make the vocal track more present.  The bass level sounded OK to me.  The ending seemed to fizzle, I would have expected a build up and flourish... again just a matter of taste.

Nice Cjazz/blues tune.  Nice ballad.  You always put out nice stuff.

    Warren,
Just saw your email moments ago and listened to the MP3 you sent.  I had forgotten how special this song really is.

Your vocal was a very passionate delivery and you shouldn't diminish the fine job that you did.  Your vocal and Gary's keyboard perfomance really inspired me on this song.  And as always, Mark did an awesome Guitar solo.

I'm listening on PC speakers at home, for what I am able to decipher this sounds awesome.

@ Mark: - I think you did an incredible mix.  I sincerly mean this when I say that you are the 1st individual that has made my sax sound great!  Thanks for taking the time to tweak my sax sound.  I'm very happy with it!

Warren, thanks for allowing me to be a part of this project!

That's lovely. Super performances from all concerned. I might back off the reverb on the lead vocal and hi-pass it a bit, but the whole thing sounds really lush. Very nice work gents.

    excellent!

agree with the reverb on the voice, warren...
think you could mix it dead dry.

and maybe do fader rides, to bring up certain passages, that just kind of fall under the volume they need to be...
not compression, and not limiting, but just really dialed in volume fader automation.

This is nice and the vocal work, all that needs to be said about bass and reverb has been said.  The Sax and Guitar are sweet.

It sounds pretty good Warren, there seem to be some timing anomolies with your bass track though bro. I love the tone though. It may be the drums? But the bass and drums don't feel "glued together."

Thanks everyone - all good comments.

I just sent Warren a new mix. I started by aligning the bass a drums a bit - must have been an import problem. The bass is down - and I lowered the verb on the bass and did a high pass on the vocals. I also went through and did as Rob suggested and raised the gain on the vocals in certain places.

I would imagine Warren will post this new version soon.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions. This is a great place to learn.

    very nice work, guys!

warren - the vocals seem "dull," or "fuzzy", comb filtering maybe?  you've delivered with great passion - I'd rather hear the real thing, not overprocessed vocals.  love the bass & rhythm

rich - this sax is smokin'!  fantastic!

mark - really nice guitar and mix.

gary - love that elec piano!

darren - not sure I've heard anything from you before, and this makes me sad that I've missed anything!  very tasteful interpretation for the drums!

Very nice ballad... Well done guys...
It's probably too late, but I think the vox could use more compression (normally while tracking)...  I'm hearing a lot of proximity affect... sounds like you're riding the mic Warren, and backing up when you hit the higher(louder) notes... when you do that, the tone is altered (less bass)... "riding the mic" a habit most of us old timers picked up before the widspread use of compresser/limiters...  easiest way to fix it is to re-sing it with a good plugin... excellent performance though...

That said I love the song and arrangement... great sax tone... love the guitar tone too...

Out of Love, more like out of key. Yikes! This should be classified more like jazz or oldies rather than blues. Although the two finger guitar break does give me the blues because I suffered through the whole song. On a positive note, the vocals do come back a bit into alignment with the harmonies. The Kenny G type gives it a jazzy feel, so if anyone actually likes that style it may appeal to them. My constructive suggestion would be to get the vocals more in key with the rest of the song because it appears to be too dissonant. Teach you're guitar player to use more fingers and do a better job with the solo. The electric piano was OK.

Well, before I address the people who have social graces and obvious music creds I'll address pistolpete.  Thank you, pete, for the buttload of creative criticism you gave to us.  You know, I searched through archives to find your music so I could learn from you but I only found posts of criticism and no music.  That having been said,  my only beef with you is the way you talked about Mark's lead.   I addressed my vocal in the intro post.  I happen to love the lead Mark did on this.  Oh, you can comment back but I won't answer another of your posts until you include a link to your music.  Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Ed (bapu)- We agree with your assessment and Mark has made changes.  Thanks, buddy.

Lynn- I thought everyone knows that I live an a very large airplane hangar!  LOL.  You were correct in what you said and we appreciate it.  Mark has remixed and we appreciate everyone being honest.  It helped us a bunch!  Now where is my airplane?  LOL!

Shad(Foxwolfen)- Mark did the cut thing and other things people have talked about.  Frankly, I screwed up because when you said do a low cut, I cut the bottom of the sheet music off. That stinkin' sound didn't change. Man, I misunderstood!   Luckily Mark understood.  Nice to hear fro you, buddy!

Daryl- You know, I rushed that mix to the forum and didn't realize how much verb was there.  I don't think Mark intended it to go up right away.  All of you really helped.  This is a great place to tweek things.  Thanks!!  Oh, I think I have something on that ending that Mark can't get rid of without doing a "chop stop".  OOPS!  I know what you mean, though!!

Rich- Thanks for working with us on this.  I love the sax and, yes, Mark made it stand out the way it should.  You outdid yourself on this one and we really appreciate it!!  And look, it only took two years to finish it since you did the part.  LOL

Well, at least you haven't yet told me how bad my mix is - maybe you could bring a bit of your professional opinion to that.

Wow!  I must be listening to the new mix because it sounds exceptional.  Great song and arrangement.  Everyone kicked in on an excellent performance.  I really didn't notice too much reverb on the vocals Warren and I thought you did an excellent job on delivering the intent and emotion of the lyrics.  Kudos to Mark on the mix and the signature "CLEAN " lead guitar.  Kudos to all on a really nice number.

Love this piece and the intro sax is killer.  Mix really has a live vibe.  GREAT collab gents!
