Wow that's both sad and very eerie - he popped into my head just yesterday and I had a feeling that we'd been seeing an "RIP Allan Holdsworth" thread in the near future. I just didn't think it would be the next day! The last couple of videos I saw him in he didn't look very well.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

For whatever reason, I too was kind of expecting this. Maybe something one's subconscious recorded...

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

It's interesting to read the RIP tweets on Twitter from people you wouldn't have thought were fans (but then again, why shouldn't they be?) Like for e.g, David Coverdale.

Yeah. That's because Holdsworth was a "musician's musician". Every musician, regardless of their musical style, appreciated Holdsworth's talent and creativity. http://www.antimusic.com/news/17/April/17Eddie_Van_Halens_Favorite_Guitarist_Allan_Holdsworth_Dead_At_70.shtml " In the early 1980s, Eddie Van Halen was said to proclaim that Holdsworth was "the best, in my book" and "so damned good that I can't cop anything."

mikedocy ... Yeah. That's because Holdsworth was a "musician's musician". ... And he's the one that said that anyone that knows music is an idiot! How could he be a musician's musician if that is true?
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

The really cool thing about Holdsworth was just how far "above" the guitar he played; what I mean by this is that, despite the fact that his lines were amazingly technical for the guitar, the solos would have sounded astounding being played on a number of other instruments. Holdsworth said Coltrane was a major influence and you could really hear that in his playing, but not so surprisingly, one can easily imagine his lines being played by a saxophonist (or a synthesist) and still sounding great. R.I.P.

I just listened to some of his stuff again for the first time in many years. It's just beyond words. The guy's chordal and scalar knowledge were unsurpassed. We've all heard the term "virtuoso" a million times, but Allan truly deserved that title.

Wikipedia is now citing a heart attack as the cause of death. I just found this video of him with Chad Wackerman and Ernest Tibbs from 2010. His playing on it is absolutely top notch.

The thing that bothers me the most about Allan's passing is not that he passed away so young ... I suppose all of us are gonna walk through that phase of life ...In our own time It's all the cut throat bad dealings he was having with the people he had in his life that were trying to fleece him while he was still alive ... IMHO, that's a tough one to have to contend with . Kenny

I wouldn't be surprised if the stress of that contributed to his heart attack. I've always had low blood pressure but a couple of years ago I had to deal with the stress of a bad employee who was trying to take me for a ride on a daily basis, and after a couple of months of it I was shocked to take one of those free blood pressure tests and "warning - prehypertension" appeared on the screen. Stress does terrible things to your health, especially your blood pressure and heart. Anyway I think this is my favorite Holdsworth track. The chords are beautiful and it's some of the most tasteful playing you will hear.

Yeah, it sucks and I couldn't help thinking that too... Most of us love to enjoy the talent, but there's always those few that try however they can to take advantage of it and make money for themselves. They always get what they really deserve eventually, but the innocent get trampled in the meantime.
