I haven't even had the year's worth that I paid for yet, let alone any of the "free" ones. The offer always seemed like a semi-suicidal desperate cash grab to me, so I'm mostly annoyed with myself for allowing my natural cynicism to be over-ruled by the cheerleaders upstairs.

As Bapu points out, anyone who thought they'd be getting free updates in 5-10 years was whistling up a Dixie tree for a free lunch. Fruity Loops made one-time purchases work for about 5 years, but I have the feeling it was a much lower-cost operation than Cake, which has a real staff. I thought that would last a little longer. I dont' think Gibson was scamming us (except the Momentum thing - which means they have to keep a server open for that for a year). I think Gibson made a go of it and had some "consultants" say if you buy SONAR and we do this promotion we think we can sell X units and pay back Roland and then on to Moscow and conquer the DAW world. Well, it didn't work and Gibson has made a few other mistakes like that so has no cash to fall back on. But simply shut down a product? I can't see them (or anyone) letting Cake just die - it still has value. Just looking at the forums there are plenty of people that would buy or upgrade SONAR, and the forumites are a small percentage of buyers, and a small percentage of current users. There are hundreds and thousands of users able and willing to shell out $100-or more a year. That is a lot of cash to leave on the table. Not enough to staff a full company, but enough for a couple of developers. As for the rest - I upgraded Vegas through Majix. Now it doesn't work, but Vegas 7 works fine on my win 7 (along w/ SONAR). So it ain't the end of the world. Not great news, but you are good to go for the next few years w/ SONAR, tho I wouldn't open a studio using it after today.

AT, I believe the multiple post thing has to do with server load. It happens when you click the post button and it seems to "hang" and you click the post button again. Some have learned how to pad post count by taking advantage of that by clicking 8-10-12 times. Not that post count will matter when the forum is shu..

Randy P The reality is the music business has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. The only people making money that aren't performers are streaming services.
Such few performers are making money. Its not like the 60s, 70s, or 80s where so many acts could build followings and have careers. The whole thing is a mess

FCCfirstclass The mods said that all the servers would continue to operate. I hope that is true!
That is not what the mod said: The mod stated Gibson is working very hard to sell of the servers piece by piece as part of the Gibson dedicated mission of acquired and destroy.

Randy P The sentence regarding "a team during the transition". That's lawyer speak for "we are shutting this whole thing down in the near future". I take that to mean all online support for the product, including this forum will be cease to exist in the near future. I would imagine that Gibson has put out feelers to likely interested parties and found no takers prior to today's announcement. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds, but if were to bet on it, this will all be a fond memory sooner rather than later.
You nailed it right there.

Wow. This actually saddens me. While not my primary daw, I do still use Sonar and have been for a mighty long time. It, IMHO, is the finest looking daw out there. On the positive side, there are plenty of options to keep you going for years and when/if it falters, I'm sure the third paryt plugins in their VST3 format(s) will pick up the slack. I didn't really buy into the monthly updates although I did purchase the "lifetime" of updates. After a while it just seemed like it was too much work to try to be innovative on a monthly basis. Welp...Carry on my Wayward Son.

I am afraid I have to agree with Randy. As a closely held company, Gibson's financials are pretty much a black box, but it has always been my impression that Cakewalk was never a major cash cow. The "acquisition strategy" is just smoke and mirrors. If Cakewalk were a major income generator, the announcement would have been another sale to an eager customer wanting to buy a golden goose for cheap from a company that is deep in debt. Shutting Cakewalk down will have no significant effect on Gibson's massive debt, and more likely represents a mea culpa move on the part of the Gibson management to show that they are no longer foolishly spending on marginal investments in order to try to get new lenders to take them seriously and bail them out before the bankruptcy hits early next year. I expect we were close to this situation in 2008, when Roland, which was much more closely aligned with the Cakewalk products, decided to dump them. So many of us should probably be grateful to the insane acquisition frenzy that ultimately has gotten Gibson to this point. When the bankruptcy hits, you can expect that whatever money is set aside to keep the servers running is going to go to paying the creditors, and no one will have the authority to devalue the asset by making the software freely available in any form. As others have noted, once you disperse the employees, there is nothing left to sell except an aging suite of rapidly spoiling software. This is truly the end. The offer of lifetime updates sounded like a hail Mary attempt to show the bosses that Cakewalk could still make an income stream in an over-mature market, and the generally acknowledged deterioration in support was another symptom of a company struggling to avoid becoming a cost center. The stress on new features at the cost of bug fixes also gave a hint that there were problems attracting new money. It is tempting to say now that we all would have preferred the bug fixes, but lacking the new customers that the new features were designed to recruit, we might have found ourselves here even earlier with that strategy. At least we would have more reliable software until our aging computers break down. The recent release of Momentum, which presumably now falls into the infant mortality statistic, was just struggling in the quicksand.
