Isn't it great that music can be recorded and those no longer with us can live on regardless. RIP.

Re: RIP Chris Squire 2015/07/05 11:29:55 (permalink)
Hi,

I have, even here, always been cross when some folks say that the bass has to play with the drums, or this has to be done with that.

There is nothing more bizarre than that, to slim down the quality of the music by limiting it to one thing in a band ... like there are no other instruments to work with at all ... and this is the part of rock'n'roll that is totally stupid, and elementary and beginner school stuff.

In the end, the musicians that you remember, will end up being those that did their own thing, and they did it well enough that you just stood there, and heard it ... and we all went wow!

I doubt, that some parts, had anything to do with the drummer, or the guitar, or this or that, and in the end, to my ear, I think that folks ended up coloring around the player's ability.

Chris was one of these folks. But it tells you that he sat back at home, and thought ... what to do here, and it was not just notes ... he might even have thought ... ohhhh I want this sound here, and then mix and match until he found it. We're too mundane, and simplistic, to take it beyond the notes, and a chord, and in fear that the guitar player will lose his spot in the song ... heck, if the guitar player loses his spot, you need a new player! PERIOD!

This was one of the treats in listening to a lot of other progressive music from Europe ... because many of them, even though they were total newbies to it, were not afraid of mistakes, and simply just played, and there are times, when you hear Amon Duul 2, or Guru Guru, or Ash Ra Tempel, and you cringe ... yikes, that's a mistake, but in the end, when you listen to it as a whole piece, one wrong note in the middle of 757 notes ... so what? And this is something that is missing in today's music ... heaven forbid that the CHB play another Megabruhaha song, and has a mistake in it! But sometimes, mistakes is where you learn.

There are many musicians like Chris Squire, in my book. I think of Rick Wright, the same way ... you take his moods and 3rd dimention from Pink Floyd, and the work becomes empty ... The Who, lost some serious personality when Moonie died ... maybe it was because Keith always looked at himself as an "anti-musician" and he loved to accent details that would normally not be done by other musicians. Led Zeppelin lost its touch, when Bonzo passed away. And it was not just a drummer touch, it was something else, that helped. Bonzo could stay with Robert, which helped Jimmy catch up and vice versa ... most drummers, specially nowadays, have no chance of staying with a Robert Plant of those early days! They are way too metronomic to be good enough to even come close, and this is one of the reasons why so much music today is of the cookie cutter mentality ... instead of taking it to the limits and extremes.

Maybe I'm a bit weird on this, but "musicianship" for me, is about someone that can go crazy with what he does, and he/she is not afraid to not stop. You can see this on a Roy Harper, on a Bob Dylan, on a Peter Hammill, folks that are not afraid of their words and music, and they work with a nice I don't care attitude, to what you think ... and rightly so!

You have to stand up to the "standards" in music ... otherwise, no one will notice you!

Where do you want to be?

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I decided to listen to my Ozric Tentacles Pandora station this morning instead of my typical jazz station while getting ready to walk the dogs. Here's what Pandora decided to stream for my listening pleasure.

1. Magma - Hhai - Live (rock, Wagner, Coltrane influences)
2. Chris Squire - Lucky Seven - Fish Out Of Water
3. King Crimson - Starless - Red (wore out 2 vinyl copies of this album)
4. Genesis - Back to NYC - Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (saw live)
5. Rush - Fly By Night - Fly By Night (saw live in a club in Schaumburg, IL in Dec. '74 or Jan. '75)
6. Liquid Tension Experiment - 914 - Liquid Tension Experiment 2 (I HAVE to buy this CD)
7. Jeff Beck - Play With Me - Wired
8. Ozric Tentacles - Flying Machines - Paper Monkeys
9. Alan Parsons Project - The Voice - I, Robot (on the way out the door)

What a way to start the day! Hit me with some Squire and then one great bass player after another.

All of which reminded me to pull out my Squackett - A Life Within A Day CD from 2012. I thought it was a treat when Chris and Steve Hackett dropped this on us. Now? It's a treasure!
