RIP Chris Squire

I have just seen a tweet by John Wetton say Chris Squire has just died. I knew he was ill with leukemia and had to pull out of the current Yes tour.

So sad, Chris was one of the greats and one of the best rock bass players of all time. On to the heart of the sunrise, Chris.

Re: RIP Chris Squire 2015/06/28 11:33:06 (permalink)
Hi,

There are a lot of bass players that have gotten attention before, and now and then you go to a concert, and you can hear Bootsie, or you can hear Stanley, or you can hear something resembling Jaco ... and then ... the difference stops.

You wonder where all the dexterity and musicianship went, and how it affected and helped create the music that has become such a strong part of our lives?

Chris belongs in that group. It might have been a bit of the show off side of things, but there is no doubt, when you hear his fingers run to heaven and back, that you just experienced something special that very few musicians of any kind ... know how to play and work it ... you remember it forever.

I suppose there is no greater compliment to a musician than those amazing moments, and that the chance to record them helped bring it all together ... and the fact that at the time, no one stood in their way -- Chris would likely have broken a bass over their heads? -- and the band, went on to put together a lot of memorable music.

I think it's time that YES, takes a rest. And if they have one other epic piece behind them, it will have to be with Jon Anderson at the helm, to help bring together, one last time, the beauty of the work that one person gave their life for ... music that will forever be remembered.

You can't ask for more.

RIP and the heavenliest words and care for the family.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Agree that YES without Anderson just wasn't the same. Their last album is really weak, but I will now treasure it as Chris' last gift to us.

Chris a show-off? Yeah. Any other bass player use a triple neck like he did on Awaken? Doubt it.

Re: RIP Chris Squire 2015/06/28 14:05:15 (permalink)
Very sad news. I was hoping it would be one of those rumors when I first saw the news this morning, but alas...

Chris was one of those rare musicians with a remarkably singular approach to his instrument yet was widely influential nonetheless (even if not always in ways easily noticed). Keith Moon comes to mind as another. Chris just approached the instrument differently than most others and somehow managed to weave his signature counterpoint, his melodic excursions and his aggressive low rumble seamlessly in the music.

He was also an entertaining guy and seemed always positive, even in the face of criticism.

One of my favorite Squire stories is when keyboardist Eddie Jobson posted a long story on his website about his unfortunate dealings with Yes. Eddie had "joined" Yes after the recording of 90125, appears in the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" video and was to go on tour with them before they decided to go in a different direction, but they didn't bother to give him the courtesy of talking to him directly and he found out through his manager or something. Anyway, Eddie posted this long diatribe about them that included his depiction remembering Chris as being one of those pretentious guys who used to drive around town in his Rolls Royce just so he could be "seen".

Chris wrote an email to the site consisting of the words, "Actually it was a Bentley..." and nothing else.

RIP Chris. You will be missed.

Interestingly that bass was commissioned by (depending on the story) either Rick Wakeman or his bassist, Roger Newell for use on one of Rick's solo tours and then Rick later gave it to Chris. It started life as a six string guitar plus fretted and fretless bass necks, but Chris restrung the guitar neck like an 8-string bass but missing the bottom course of strings.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

To paraphrase something Mike Keneally once said, "Yes' music was ingrained in my DNA".   Same here, and it couldn't have happened without Chris.    RIP.
