I, too, have or have demoed every product mentioned so far with the exception of EchoBoy (which takes a dongle, so I'm not interested). Why so many? Well, partly because every one of them has fallen down in at least one regard; maybe it lacked an important feature or was just too clumsy or time-consuming.

99% of the time, I'm after a basic delay rather than some carefully-crafted rhythmic effect. So my go-to delay has to be simple but still have all the essential features. So scratch Timeless 2, it can do amazing things but simple tasks aren't always straightforward. Scratch RP-Delay for the same reason. Tritik tkDelay is a favorite, but mainly because it has a couple features most delays don't have (in particular, the Reverse function) - it's not the one I reach for first, either.

Imperial Delay has pretty much every feature you can imagine. It's well laid-out and simple to use, but you can dive deep if you want to. Its two-stage feedback feature is unique and wonderful on leads and vocals. But I hesitate to recommend it because I feel it's overpriced.

So what will you find in 90% of my projects? The good ol' Sonitus Delay. It's a plain-jane wallflower next to more modern offerings, lacks some advanced features, and it still has some issues dealing with tempo changes. But it's just so quick and easy to use! Takes 5 seconds to drop it in and tweak it.

[EDIT] I forgot to mention an often overlooked oldie-but-goodie: Ricochet from Audio Damage. Just 49 bucks and deceptively simple. Almost the equal of the Sonitus for quick results but has additional features such as chorus in the feedback loop and separate filters and panning for each tap.

Lots of great ones here I've not heard of that I may have to check out.

Depending on your budget there's Bloom from fxpansion, it does some unusual tricks that I've not seen from others.

No dongle for EchoBoy in v5, Bit.

Good news. Still Pace, though, and it's as much the software component as the physical dongle that I want to avoid.

PSP Echo at $29 is insane. This is my go-to delay for guitar. It's a tape echo and you can make it as clean or "analog" as you'd like. At that price it's a no brainer!

Peace!

Nomad Factory's Echoes is good for various tape/oilcan/analog echoes.  It does have sync and controls for how deep to ping pong.

Prior to that I used to use the Kjaerhus delay for analog/tape.  I don't know where you can find it these days, maybe VST Warehouse?

Another good freebie is the TAL Dub-Delay.

Also don't forget Guitar Rig.  It has a handful of delays, and you can use containers to layer multiple instances.

If I may be so bold as to toss something I cobbled up into the discussion: https://tonecarver.wordpress.com/delay8/

It's a delay plugin based on the UD-Stomp / Intellefex architecture: 8 delay lines, cascadable, with individual modulation and hipass/lopass/pan per line. Great for complex choruses, Holsdworth-type of delay effects, and can even get into the near reverb diffusion territory (see the Atmo Linger preset, for example). The GUI could use an overhaul (I don't seem to have a knack for making nice GUIs) but the engine has been pretty solid and the price is good too ... free  :)

Me, too. I've got other delays that can duck, but the PSP makes it very simple and convenient.
Plus you know it must be good because it's got a knob labeled "WOW".

I also picked up the reverb, because, um, it was $19. It never occurred to me that I might need for a reverb just for piano, and I'm still not certain I do. But it does sound nice, a little weird but nice. And that freeze function they're so proud of might actually be useful if it was automated. But mainly, it was $19.

I'm happy you and yoropal succumbed bitflipper. The great thing about PSP deals (which happen maybe half a dozen times a year) is that if you own some of their plugins you get even more off which is very very nice is if you like shiny new VSTs without dongle copy protection!

I'm broke, too. But I budget 50 bucks a month for my GAS fix, and I missed August because I had birthdays to buy gifts for, missed September due to not having an internet connection, and didn't even get myself a birthday present in October. So it's been 3 months since I bought anything and I was jonesin'. $47 seemed reasonable for something to tide me over until Christmas (I already know what I'm gettin').

I have a similar plugin budget, around $50/month. I used to blow a lot more until I started to question the dollar/reward ratio. But over the last year and a half I've gone months without buying anything, enabling me to make a few larger purchases, like my Komplete Ultimate upgrade, and just a few days ago I splashed out on The Glue. I feel like I'm getting way more than my $100 worth from that plugin already. Quality, not quantity, is definitely the way forward for me from now on.

I vowed that I wasn't going to yield to template and purchase any more delays or verbs...
But when faced with the PSP Echo/PianoVerb deal I backslid and bought not one but both.
It was the PSP Echo ducking feature that did me in; once my right hand whipped out that bankcard the left hand demanded a turn; after all the the PianoVerb might prove useful it told me.
<sigh>

I was thinking of picking up the PSP delay, but Tkdelay just added ducking, so I'm all good for now. Tkdelay covers 90% of what I need and it's easy to use.

Delay8 is also really cool. I use it for Holdsworth style sounds. I'm amazing that something so good is free.

Ah, but you're missing the point, IMO.  Don't use it on piano.  Use it on, for example, acoustic guitar for a very nice affect that people will wonder over how you achieved it.

Yeah, it actually is a piano-like reverb, imitating the way piano strings reverberate.

Yes, more of a resonant effect than a reverb. I got the free version when I was trying to emulate the guitar sound from the Strawbs "Down by the Sea" which was the result of putting the guitar speaker under a grand piano. I never nailed that sound but its a nice effect none the less.

Hey Bit,

Not to give you a swelled head or nothin', but appreciate once again your solid and objective analysis, feedback about delays. So helpful.

Reference tritik. Have no idea why I even purchased the damn thing. Probably in an alcoholic rampage, forgotten under the dam.

Revisited the plug, and almost all the bells and whistles are there in simplicity.

Thanks for getting me back on track.

I had to keep reminding myself I had tkDelay for months while it languished in my "rarely used" folder. Eventually it worked its way up to a permanent position on the first string team and into the frontline folder.

I just installed the demo version of tkDelay.....so far I like it...BUT...and I'm not sure it's the fault of the delay...but on occasion, it will "flake out" on me.....all the settings on the gui will start just flying around....and then Sonar Platinum crashes....yet the Sonar process cannot be killed, resulting in a reboot....

I'm just wondering if anyone else using that delay has had any issues like that.  I've only been running Platinum for a week or so...using the most recent incarnation....

I like the delay, and would likely purchase it, but...not if it's potentially problematic.....  I probably should have purchased the PSP Echo when it was on sale, but didn't......the demo of that hasn't seemed to result in any issues (as of yet, anyway).
