Recommendations for delay VSTs?
I'm in the market for a new delay/echo VST and would like to hear your recommendations. What I already have: Bootsie NastyDLA - This is my workhorse delay. Unfortunately it's 32 bit but it's good in most other regards. BT Oilcan Echo - no tempo sync, no useful documentation. BT Tempo Delay - has tempo sync but not much in the way of character or other settings. NI Replika - has saturation and does okay on guitars, but is a bit sparse in terms of other settings. What I'd like to see is some or all of this: - 64 bit architecture
- Stereo capability with cross-feedback, ping-pong, etc
- Complex timing possibilities (eg. multi-tap, random delay times, etc)
- Tonal 'character' (eg. saturation, phaser, chorus, whatever)
- High pass/low pass on the wet signal
- Tempo sync
Soundtoys Echoboy looks like a good contender, although it is fairly pricey. What else would people recommend, if anything?
Sonar Platinum (Newburyport) / Win 8.1 64bit / Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 / Absynth / Kontakt / Play / Superior Drummer 2 / ESP LTD guitar / etc Twilight's Embrace - gothic/death metal | Other works - instrumental/soundtracks

If you REALLY want to get into the Delay then Fabfilter Timeless is quite nice... Also SoundToys EchoBoy... IK's Echoplex is quite nice for Echo also... UVI just release Relayer also...a delay with much more... There's a lot of delays to choose from Here's a big list of FREE ones... http://bedroomproducersbl...ree-delay-vst-plugins/

+1 for timeless, and audio damage have some good stuff, their fsu plugs always have a delay module and plenty of "character".... finding a new delay will be a fun investigation for you i think :-)

With it being on sale I would too. It's hard to think of something Melda doesn't include in a plugin.

I use Timeless, Sonitus and the pro channel VKFX delay. They all work very well and each requires different amounts of work and have different levels of options. Timeless by FF is the best of the bunch but Sonitus is free and the VKFX PC module is cheap and easy (two of my more important criteria).

I like:
Tritik Boz Imperial Delay FabFilter Timeless 2
Any of the above are more than enough. Even the included Sonitus does everything needed. I favor the first two, probably, the Imperial Delay the most, because of ease of use and great features.
That all said, Soundtoys Echoboy operates the most like what I would want in a delay and is my favorite. Great presets. Super intuitive. Looks like a delay should in terms of dials. In fact it has multiple delay units to choose from.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

My go to delays are H-delay by Waves and Ubermod by Valhalla they cover most situations. Sonitus delay is great as well. Another free one not mentioned that I would recommend is also from valhalla https://valhalladsp.com/shop/delay/valhalla-freq-echo/ If you set the pitch shift at zero then it is a great delay.

FF Timeless, Relayer, EchoBoy (better to buy whole bundle during BF) all give you a month to play with them... I would start there.... MMultiBand does too but I found it lost lots of the hi freqs... FF T2 is the best in this regard. All of the above are very sweet... but trial them to see which speaks to you. I got Relayer thinking it would be very innovative but still rely on Timeless2 for most stuff.

So many great suggestions, thanks! But I don't have much free time for experimentation, so does anybody know if Relayer allows parallel delay lines and feedback between them? I couldn't see anything like that in the video or the manual. Failing that, the Fabfilter Timeless 2 looks like it can do almost as much. Those aren't cheap though, and in the short term, I'm quite tempted by the Tritik or the Valhalla as cheaper alternatives. ValhallaRoom is my go-to reverb so I'm surprised I missed that they had a delay too.

I love Sigmund, even though I almost always use something less capable. For the price, when on sale, it's probably the most delay-bang-for-the-buck you'll find. It's routinely available on sale for ~ 55 bucks. Echoboy is quite pricey, but last summer it could be had for 99 bucks. Maybe with Black Friday around the corner ... You can't go wrong with Fab Filter, but sales are infrequent. Timeless 2 was actually about half price at one point, something you almost never see Fab Filter do. This was right around the time that D16 Group release Sigmund. Coincidence? Oh yeah, you should also definitely consider Melda Production MMultiBandDelay. When on sale (it is as of today but I don't know how much longer), it's only $27 USD. Very good value at that price, IMO.

Do you have the full version of Reaktor? If so, there are delays of every kind in the Reaktor User Library, ranging from straight ahead echo to full-on insane wackiness with everything in between. Boscomac's Reaktor delays are superb, you can find them here: http://boscomac.free.fr/?p=rack I'm a huge fan of his Inity dub delay, guitar heaven! Another great free Reaktor one is WabbelEcho, you get some amazing sounds out of that. Especially out-there on vocals.

I have most of the above mentioned delays. And I have favorites for certain kind of tasks. But for me finding just one to fit the bill is very much like finding a guitar that "speaks" to you. And, at least for me, that would be Relayer. It is moron proof and has killer features. Do yourself a favor and watch Dan Worrel's overview of it on YouTube.

A very versatile delay with some excellent routing capabilities is Rob Papen's RP-Delay: "can be routed in a number of ways to create various distinct delay models: mono, stereo, dual stereo, channel split, split multi, serial multi, parallel multi, full serial, and reverse." It has a huge amount of control over Trigger, Envelope/LFO, Modulator, & Sequencer.....+ 5 huge banks of presets. A highly underrated Delay and if you like to have complete control, this is it.......also as a bonus, it includes RP-Verb. http://rekkerd.org/review-rob-papen-rp-delay-versatile-delay-effect-plugin/

Based on your criteria, I would think Eventide's H3000 would satisfy all those in one plugin. For pure delays, you can't go wrong with HDelay, Echoboy, Imperial and so on. Some, like Timeless, add modulation as well. H3000 throws everything into a single plugin. Not saying it is any better, just that it does meet your list. Regards, Dan
