Reconsider - REMIXED on 10/19

I want to thank everybody that has helped me to improve my productions, this last year, by lending me their golden ears and wisdom.  This song is just 2 weeks old, thus, very flexible at this point.  I enjoyed working in X2 and used several of the new goodies that came with it including TH2 and Breverb.

As always, I welcome your input and thank you for taking the time.

10/18/12 Update:  I've taken some of your suggestions and remixed this.  I made changes to the drums to bring them out a bit more in the mix, as well as the bass gtr.  I tood Jonas's suggestion to soften the lead vocal a tad.  I backed off on the delay on the lead vox,  but ever so slightly.  I look forward to your input.

10/19/12 update:  Once again I have taken a few ideas from you and adjusted accordingly.  I just realized that this song is 3 weeks old today,  so it's still on baby food.  Thanks for the nutrition.

Hey Lynn!  Good job bud.  I wish I listened to the radio more so I could compare this to something modern...sounds very retro to me but in a very cool way.  I really like the vocal treatment, and the guitar distortion (fuzz?) is way cool.

I'm still on my laptop unfortunately, but will give this a second listen in my studio tomorrow.

What delay are you using on the vox?

    Cheers!

I liked it Lynn. The fuzz tone is not my favorite distortion tone for guitar but you got it to sit well in this mix. I say you did an awesome job!

Your voice sounds great on this, but maybe back off on the echo slightly... also it needs something at the beginning, maybe a drum hit or fill... I know it will be interesting to watch/hear your progress on this one... well done Lynn...

Hey Lynn...  I finally got off my laptop and back in the studio for a listen...on real speakers.  Actually I like the delay.. a lot.  And I really like the "neo-retro" vibe you got going. (I just made that up... but you know me-  I like non-standard stuff.)

Now, I'd really like those drums to pop!  Have you tried Sonar's Transient Shaper or Percussion Strip on them?  Very cool tools.  I also find the bass too far down in the mix for my liking.  What do you think of bring it up a couple of dB?

I think you're on to something......  *wink*

    Cheers!

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to listen and respond.

Tony, I'm using a preset from Breverb.  It's #9 in the Inverse bank called "Strange and Dark Echo".  I fell in love with it because it reminds me of my beloved Roland Space Echo.  It has that "muddiness" that comes from a tape echo, which is very appropriate at times.  I was surprised to find this in a reverb.  If you want those drums to pop, then pop they will.  I'll bring the bass up on the next pass, too.  Good ears.

Marcus, that fuzz tone comes from the new amp sim in X2, TH2.  I just found it by accident and thought that it worked for this tune.

Frank, I agree with you about the beginning.  When I read your comment, that little dim light bulb went off in my head, and I can hear it, now.  That's why I appreciate your contributions so much.  As for the delay, I'll play with that as this song develops.

Vicente, thank you.  It's quite a compliment to be compared to Eric Clapton, even if it's just his voice.  And, yes, I do like the new X2.  It suits my workflow very much.  I have a number of songs mixed in X1 that will be remixed.

Eric, thank you so much.  I've been enjoying your songs quite a bit lately.

very hooky Lynn - love your voice on this one.  The guitar solo section straight after the chorus is fab but there seems to be the slightest timing issue right at the end of the section.

    Hey Lynn,
Since you are getting some miles out of TH2, can you tell me how many presets you got?  I can only come up with about 16.... I thought there were supposed to be many.  Maybe mine didn't download correctly???

This could be mixed to sound very good.

The drums sound a bit thin and the vocal is a little edgy.

On the vocal track I think that a very modest EQ cut could make it perfect.  Try using the Sonitus EQ, cut 2.1 dB at 5470, Q=3.  This could even work as the master bus EQ setting.

    Cheers,
    J

Thank you, Jonas.  I happen to be working on it right now, and I will do exactly as you suggest.  I have already addressed the drums and bass, but I haven't touched the vocals, yet.  Thank you for your golden ears (and, after listening to your latest submission, your ears are platinum), and for your time.

5 minutes later:  I did as you suggested, and surprise, surprise.  It's right on target, and the vocal sounds to me to be more natural.  Good call.

Hey Lynn, I like it.  A cross between King Crimson and George Harrison.  Ok the mix is good but the drums still feel thin to me, actually it's more the snare the kick is cool.  When the vocals came in they jumped out at me a bit.  There also seems to be some sort of wierd click at the very begining and in the middle.

But great job really liked this.

Lynn it's always a pleasure to hear your work.  Love this one, nice chord progressions and of course all the FX already mentioned above.   Your vocals are nice, I agree with the Clapton ref above but you also reminded me of one of my very old-time faves of the band Chicago, Terry Kath.  Beautifully mixed.   Great job and thanks for posting it!

Hi Ben, nice to see you back here.  King Crimson and George Harrison!  I never would have thought that, but you identified two of the biggest influences in my music over the last 40 years.  I've already addressed the drums for my next mix, and I think you'll be happier.  The vocal won't jump out quite so much when the drums come up in volume.  That click baffled me, too, until I realized it was part of the percussion.  I decided to leave it in just to baffle other people.

John, I appreciate your comments and your time.  I was a big Chicago fan, and I loved Terry Kath's vocals.  Though it wasn't intentional, thanks for the the comment.  BTW, I like your latest song.  Until next time...

    lynn,
i didn't hear the first version i guess....
but i hear the drums, the vox effect sounds more dialed in...maybe a single repeat would be better than more.....
bass guitar is prominent....but sounds nice and round.

mix elements are always subjective, of course, but i'd love to hear a bit more sheen on this.
especially on the lead vocal tracks, it is a bit too rolled off on the high end, sounds like a sock over the speakers...

this arrangement reminds me of something todd rundgren did with Utopia, can't think of the name of it....

    it's a neat song

I like the song! Great tunage!

Everything sounds great. I never liked the fuzz thing either but it just goes to show that even things you don't like can be pulled off very well.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

BB and GP, thanks for joining in the fun.  Since this song is not finished, I will continue to try different EQs on the vocal until I get a consensus.  The last thing anyone needs is one of my socks over their speakers!  Hmmm... maybe that's where my socks are going.

BTW, this is the first time I ever used a virtual amp sim on any project, and to be honest, I was surprised at how easy it is to dial in a preset and quickly audition it.  That's how I found the fuzz guitar in TH2.

    Lynn, this is really nice.

If I have anything to pick at it would be the drums - the snare sounds too (slappy) and I really don't like the high hat.

    Vocals are just outstanding.

All in all - this is really good.

    Hi, Lynn,

Excellent song with a cool retro vibe, wonderful performances and a great sounding mix!

Your vocals sound fantastic, and I love the vocal treatment that you used.  The classic sounding fuzz guitar gives it a late '70s flavor and adds a cool vintage quality to the mix.  I agree with Vicente about the vocals sounding a lot like Clapton on this.

    Really nice work, Lynn!

    Hey Lynn,

I just listened again.  Big improvement since I first listened my friend!!  I get the Terry Kath thing too!  Cool!

Hey...try something for me.... I found the COOLEST FX Chain called "Dirty Clean Splitter" in X2...  I'd like to hear it on your guitar part.  But turn off the Phaser.  (Everyone should study this Preset as it is SO useful!!)  Turn on the "Extra Wide" button.  It will give your guitar a huge wide sound instead of being buried over in the right speaker.
Then when your solo comes up, make it front and center please.  ;-)   (Turn off the FX.)

See what ya think.  Otherwise, A-OK!

    Cheers!

    Tony

Tony, thanks for the suggestion on the f/x chain.  I will give it a whirl.  This song is far from over, but with your help and that of others, I'm getting closer.

    All the best,
